Top Local Tips for Merida

Don't go in late May it is the hottest month of the year and dehydrate easily Bring lots of bottled COLD water. Especially in May. Merida is an extremely safe city to live in Mexico. I find jarochos (the people of Veracruz and the sinaloenses people of Sinaloa) the friendliest in Mexico. Yucatecans are very family oriented people but not as open to outsiders as the Veracruzanos. They are traditional and have strong traditions. The traffic is a little hectic. The only unpleasant experience was my husband and I driving down Paseo Montejo near the center of the city where all the lovely architecture is located at night in a rented vehicle. We were stopped and fined for failing to 'stop' at a glorieta (a circling area), that was not true. It was a complete lie to extort money as foreigners. Don't go cruising in a rental car near the center at night on a weekend---the local police will try to take a bribe. My husband and I speak Spanish natively and were able to bargain it down to $10 for a false madeup violation with the local cop. If no Spanish--not good.

Family Sunday Come on a Sunday! Sundays are special as they close the downtown are and there is music all day. Small concerts here and there and people are dancing. It's beautiful to see them dance (tango, salsa...). There are also folk dances on Sunday afternoon.

Everybody knows the best local Mayan place to support the community Everybody will try to get you to go to 'the' Mayan place where you can get the best deal. I know the cheapest place with the best quality for you... let me take you. And they actually go and take you all the way to these markets or store to try to sell you the tourist stuff supposedly made by hand by the Mayan people. if you want to save some time... and don't run around with all of these guys... do avoid it...
