Victims of credit card fraud

We stayed at the Playa Maria Beach Club Resort from 10/21/06 thru 10/27/06. We had six adults in our group renting 3 separate units at the Playa Maria via a timeshare exchange. Our biggest complaint is that one or more employees of the Playa Maria orchestrated credit card fraud on all three of us who used credit cards at the Playa Maria. We are certain that the Playa Maria was the origin of the fraud as it was the only place the credit cards were used. One was given to the front desk to cover any incidental charges in all three rooms; the other two were used in the Playa Maria Restaurant at breakfast.

When we returned home we found almost $5,000 (US) in fraudulent charges for purchases made at gas stations, grocery stores, and retail stores, including a tire store and Wal-Mart. The credit card company explained how this fraud is committed. When your card is swiped for your authorized purchase, a copy of the magnetic strip on back of the credit card is generated, and that copy is then affixed to a fake credit card, which is then used to make the fraudulent purchases.

During our stay, someone from the US attempted to contact us at the Playa Maria using the name of the person that owns the timeshare and to whom all three rooms had been registered. The receptionist at the Playa Maria told the caller that there was no such person staying at the resort. Whether this was due strictly to incompetence or was part of the fraud cover-up is unknown.

Other negatives we experienced were the construction noise from the adjacent property under construction as well as rather significant remodeling at the Playa Maria itself. The three US television channels quit working in the entire resort two days before our departure, while we were told that a technician would be out to fix the problem, they had not been restored prior to our departure. One man working the front desk was consistently rude during our stay, whether it be trying to get pool towels or arrange for airport transportation. We were hounded daily by the staff at the Playa Maria to go to time-share presentations or to purchase a tour.

On the positive, Mario the bartender and Alfonso the maintenance man were friendly and excellent. The housekeeper was honest and the rooms were thoroughly cleaned every day. The beds were comfortable and the hotel was very quite at night. The A/C worked great and was relatively quite. The hotel provided ample purified water. The pool was nice and not overcrowded.

We understand that just prior to our arrival new owners purchased the Playa Maria. Hopefully, the new ownership can clean house of the fraudulent activity, otherwise be sure to use only cash at the Playa Maria.
