Top Local Tips for Izamal

Magical town The pyramids here are small, but likely you'll be the only one there...the Convent is interesting, and the best part of being in a non-tourist town, is exploring the local hangouts, and grocery store etc etc.Izamal is a very clean town, with clean streets, and the buildings look to have fresh paint.

dining If you like five star dining and don't have a five star budget you should dine at Macan Che. The owner is a proffesional chef who has coached his staff well.

Izamal Izamal is called one of the "Magic Towns" in Mexico and it truly is. It is a colonial town painted in golden colors, and has a beautiful plaza over-looked by the Monastery once visited by the Pope. There are ruins right in town to climb and marvel over. But perhaps the most surprising thing about this town is the strong art culture. There is a tour of area artists that you can take, visiting each of their places. We visited the jewelry making workshop where they make jewelry using henequin spikes, small coconuts, berries and lots more. Fascinating! We also went to a hammock shop, paper mache shop, woodworking shop and visited a tinsmith. What a magical experience in an already magical town!
