This is the ONLY hotel I stay in on the Island. There are a lot of $25 night hotels, but you have a private resort here. Best pool on the island and just a cab to town away from traffic and noisy tourist. You are a select guest of less than 20 people ever staying here at the same time.

Top Local Tips for Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres tip always count your change! At every purchase I started counting how much change I was given on day two. Perhaps every 3rd transaction the amount I should have been given was incorrect. I would slowly count the different size coins and currency and as the retailer realized that I was really checking they would smile and keep handing me peso's until it was correct. Late at night when we eating or drinking in restaurants and bars the change would be wrong every 2nd time. Don't get me wrong I am happy to tip but I was shocked how quickly we were going through money. Now I suspect we were being shortchanged, not realizing it, and still tipping on top of that. This rule is not just for taxi's, because the 7-11 store where we bought beer and water would also constantly try to shortchange us.

Loncheria San Martin If you want an authentic home cooked meal for under $15 for 2, go to Loncheria San Martin which is a couple of blocks from Buho's around the corner from the post office (ask your taxi driver he'll know). They only serve breakfast and lunch.

Eat like a local Rather than eating in the tourist area downtown all the time, visit the Colonias neighborhood in the middle of the island and enjoy some food from the restaurants catering to the locals. Some are sit-down and others are take-away only. If you go, you will be glad you did!
