rip off

from A TripAdvisor Member
Ripoff...nasty attitude of the staff. Stayed for a couple of days in April 2004. Thought the hotel was cute but way overpriced for very basic rooms, with little or no service and a definite attitude from the front desk staff. They charged extra for each of our two children, but yet would not give them beach towels (told us we could only have two) or the continental breakfast. Also an additional charge for the chairs/umbrellas on the beach-what a rip. Would never go back.

Then there are the barracks

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and i stayed @ Cabanas Maria Del Mar and we found out something interesting. Theres a part of the hotel ( we called the barracks) which indeed did seem run down, musty, etc. This was a three story building right near the water. The rooms were very small and cramped. We then changed our room to one of the cottages...now this was nicer...much nicer. The barracks are for the back pack set, who don't care where they "crash"... Of course you'll pay more for the cottages...but you get what you paid for. Also they a poor parrot in a tiny cage on a metal perch. This is very cruel to the poor parrot. I talked w/ the managemnet about this...but they could care less....In closing this was a very nice place to stay...and the cottages were well worth the extra money

Almost Paradise

We had the most peaceful and enjoyable vacation in many years. The staff and service were excellent. They kept the place clean and were very helpful. I would highly recommend staying at Maria Del Mar to anyone as I already have. We will return next winter for a longer stay.

Please be apprised...

The problem we have is with the management of the hotel rather than the property itself. We had stayed there previously and liked it enough to recommend it to our friends, who wanted to travel with us when we returned in February 2004. Subsequent to placing reservations for adjoining rooms our friends were forced to cancel, owing to the fact that one of them in the interim was discovered to be suffering from a serious form of cancer. They were instructed by their doctor to remain in the area and begin chemotherapy treatment simmediately. They faxed a copy of the doctor's written and signed statement to the hotel, citing their need to cancel due to a serious medical emergency, and in a reply were rather abruptly told that their 2 night deposit would not be refunded, or applied to a later date, or anything but kept by the hotel. The hotel then turned around and sold the room to someone else, thus getting a windfall DOUBLE the room rate for the days paid! They cited a policy of not returning deposits within 30 days of arrival, and had no sympathy at all to the circumstances. In closing, while we have no recourse against the hotel's policies, people wanting to visit Isla Mujeres may wish to consider this in choosing the type of people they will be dealing with, as well as the physical accommodations.

OK, but not luxurious

from solarguy
We stayed three nights in the recently renovated Castle section, on the third floor, room 12. Nice new renovations, comfortable bed, nice tile in bathroom, etc.

Balcony is small and overlooks torn-down shack next door, only good for hanging wetsuits up to dry.

Hallway is kind of noisy with loud echos so you can hear when neighbors return to their rooms.

OK place to stay, but for the same price, Hotel Playa la Media Luna is much nicer.

Great Hotel - great location!

We stayed at Cabanas del Mar recently and loved it! At first, we had a room in the Tower. It was musty and old looking, so we asked to switch to one of the cabanas on the first floow - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! The bathrooms were brand new and the rooms was perfect. The air conditioning was great too. The breakfast was simple, but good. We loved having our own patio and being right next to the pool. We would definitely stay there again. But be warned - avoid the rooms in the Tower.

Perfect Getaway!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Loved Cabanas del Mar! Our room was seconds away from a wonderful beach. The room was perfectly clean, had hot water, spacious and comfortable bed and a nice balcony. The location was great. We walked into town every day/night and ate a wonderful restaurant every time.
The hotel bar/restaurant is quite good too. The management was not the most service oriented staff I have encountered: would not give you the tickets required for your free continental breakfast at 7:27, you had to wait until 7:30. Also, they will not replace beach towels until you have used them for 3 days. But this does not detract from the overall experience. Will go back!

Wonderful Hotel

from SaraRuth
We spent 2 weeks on Isla Mujeres, staying the first 4 nights at Maria Del Mar. It is a charming hotel in a great location. Our room was spacious and clean with very comfortable beds. The water pressure in the bathroom wasn't great, but other than that it was great. The bathroom was very clean with a huge shower and clean, large towels every day. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the free continental breakfast was good (sweet roll, coffee and juice at a beach front cafe). It is located right on one of the best beaches on the planet. The beach front bar (Buha's -- spelling may be wrong) was a lot of fun, with great mexican food lunches served among palm trees and tables right on the beach. What could be better? We will be back next year!

Enjoyed the stay

I just spent a week with my brother at C abanas Maria del Mar. It was thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable time. The hotel facilities are not the 'Hilton", but then I did not expect it. The staff was friendly and very helpful. It's a little pricey, considering the facilitites of the hotel, but you can't beat the location: Right on the best beach in Isla Mujeres, and withing easy walking distance to most of the things Isla Mujeres has to offer. The dining area (especially for breakfast and lunch ) right in the sand on the beach is precious. I'll return there sometime.

A Love Affair

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Maria del Mar in March 2003 and can't wait to go back this year. It is probably the most "rustic" place we have stayed ever, but the benefits far outweigh the small rooms and lumpy beds. The descriptions are misleading when it says that some of the rooms don't have ocean view. I would say that every room is ON the ocean, and it is paradise. Much preferred to Cancun, and the best buy for the money, even at $100/night! True there are other nicer small hotels along Moon Bay, but that is not North Beach. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Top Local Tips for Isla Mujeres

Bring plastic bags We brought a bunch of zipper plastic baggies for the bathroom because you can't flush the toilet paper (something common all over the island, not just this hotel). This way there was no smell, and the maid didn't have to touch dirty toilet paper.

Getting to the ferry from the airport There's a new bus service from the airport that's the best deal going. Get tickets at the airport for the ADO bus that goes to the bus station in downtown Cancun. Tickets are sold at a counter staffed by people in red polo shirts. From the bus station you can take a taxi to Puerto Juarez to catch the ferry to Isla Mujeres. This is faster and much cheaper than the other ways to get to the ferry terminal. There are two ferry terminals, the old one and a new one operated by UltraMar. Prices and schedules are the same, so it doesn't much matter which one you take.

Health and safety Avoid fresh fruits and vegetables as well as tap water. If you or someone you are travelling with has any immune system problems, keep in mind that the water you swim in in Mexico is probably contaminated like the drinking water is. We were very cautious about what we ate and drank and ended up not having any problems.
