Top Local Tips for Guanajuato

The Mummy Museum (el Museo de los Momias) Stay away! It is harder to get to, more expensive to park, and they recently remodeled it and have taken away many of the mummies on display and repositioned them in smaller rooms, with guides that are to take you through the museum for "tips". Although the walls are newly painted and the display cases and lighting are more contemporary, the museum is a real disappointment from what it used to be before the renovation. But most definitely avoid the adjacent museum on the culture of Death, as it is a very bad rendition of a "haunted house" that fails in all aspects.

Las minas (the mines) Most will probably tell you to visit Mina la Valenciana, and if you can, you should. However, right around the corner is the lesser known Boca Mina San Ramón, and I never would have know about it without the advice of my taxi driver. It is a charming and quaint building and courtyard, and one mine mouth that you can enter. There is a cool, Mexi-western style bar outside which will remind you of the 19th Century wild west. Lots of history here in a beautiful setting. Definitely check it out.

Not for small and young kids Guanajuato walkways and streets are not the best, they are really really old and because of this the are not adequate for strollers, some go down and up like hills and it requieres strenght on legs. People in guanajuato carry their kids and babies on their back or lap not in strollers.
