A very lovely hotel physically- colorful, smartly decorated, spacious common areas, airy- however, they permit smoking in the common areas, and this can be quite a problem for those who disdain cigarette smoke. The rooms are cramped. I spent three nites in the casa vilasanta and from day one to the final morning, there was no hot water. Each day I mentioned this, but nothing seemed to have been done. It is not an inexpensive hotel. Some of the help is quite pleasant, while others are not in the least helpful. Seek elsewhere...

Anyone who has stayed in very many Mexican hostels knows that the typical layout of all the rooms opening onto a central courtyard is very common. Mexican hostels, with a central courtyard are by nature, noisier than the Comfort Inn. Add to that the fact that Mexico is just a noisier country, stays up later, music playing till all hours, roosters crowing....Get a life, it's Mexico. Daily lessons in tolerance and acceptance are the norm. The Vilasanta reminds me of The Hotel California in Todo Santos, but on a smaller scale. It has been completely re-modeled, brightly painted in yellow, orange and blue. You can come and go as you please, as you have a key to the front door. The staff is friendly and smiling. I stayed for a month, in a private room. There is wireless, high speed internet access throughout, and two computers in the central courtyard that are available 24/7. Each pair of rooms has a flash hot water heater, so there is a good supply of hot water. There is not only a beautiful ground floor central courtyard, but a wonderful upstairs shaded patio. The kitchen is fantastic. Spotless, with commercial oven, gas stove, reach-in refrigerators, microwave, and everything you might need to fix your meals. Marta, a very friendly gal, perhaps 55 Y.O. will fix your breakfast and lunch for 30 pesos per meal, per day. You cant beat it, its different every day, and made with love. I should mention that it is only a 10 minute walk to El Centro and everything Guadalajara has to offer. The buses are on the corner, the subway one block, and the worlds best churros but 150 steps. Fully 50% of the guests are students at ITTO school, and another 25% are students at other schools, so there are no huge parties, as everyone has to go to school in the morning, and has homework. I found the noise level quite acceptable. When it did get too noisy at night for me, I just turned the A/C fan on, and got some nice white noise...It works perfect, try it. You'll want to make reservations well in advance, as this is THE hostel to be in. They have 100% occupancy. Indeed, at 55, I was one of the older guests (though there were others my age)and I found everyone, staff and guests to be respectful and considerate. I had a blast. If you get the chance to stay here...DO.

Terrible Service!

My room at VilaSanta wasn't available on the day I'd booked it for. There was no apology, and I was temporarily put in another room, which meant I couldn't unpack. When I finally did get to move into the room, the shower didn't work for 8 days. The receptionist was entirely apathetic, and after I'd politely complained for a third time they told me I was causing problems and should leave immediately!! It's also the noisiest hostel I've ever stayed in. There are many better places to stay in downtown Guadalajara!
