What a wonderful place. I can't wait until my next visit. I would suggest this hotel to everyone. I have tried the larger resorts and I wished I had saved the money. There is not another one better than Vista Del Mar.

We had some trepidations about staying downtown, having stayed all over Cozumel on past trips, mostly in more expensive hotels out of town. We will only stay at the Vista del Mar from now on. The room decor is lovely, and the beds are the best. Our room was on the back of the hotel, overlooking a nice little market that runs from 9 AM - 9 PM, but the gentle sound of our air conditioner blocked any noise and we slept til noon if we felt like it. If you want to sit by the little pool, you can run down the stairs to the Viejo Pescador and buy a couple of beers to take back to the pool, with a shot of the best tequila provided free. Our room had a king-sized bed, and a double bed for my son in a semi-private area. Every morning you roll over and call the front desk, and in 10 minutes you receive a tray with juice, coffee, and Mexican sweet rolls. How delightful to breakfast on your patio, for free!

Top Local Tips for Cozumel

take taxis, don't bother with renting scooters or cars If you just want to get to your beach club and back, do the math. For $8-12 each way (not including tip), you can get to your beach club or other destination on the west side of the island. A scooter will run you at least $20/day, but they suck on Cozumel's rough roads (we lost our muffler). A Bug can't handle the bumpy roads very well, either, and you'll pay at least $28/day, plus gas, which is pricier than in the US (we spent $18 to fill half a tank for a little VW Bug). Jeeps are nice, but again it comes down to the math. You'll pay at least $30 (more like $35-40), when for $16-24 roundtrip, you can get 4 people to a beachclub or Chankanaab Park in a taxi and not pay for the gas, insurance, hassle. In Cozumel, there isn't much to see on the east side since all the good snorkeling and diving are on the west side, so seeing the east side is the only reason to rent a car, in my opinion.

Ernesto's Restaurant The best guacomole - great atmosphere and owners/staff. Try the fajitas. Cab ride from downtown $5-6 maximum. Worth going.

Go off the main street Definitely go off the main street to find great cheap eats! The main street is very touristy and caters quite a bit to the cruise ship visitors with price and variation. Walk around and find some smaller local resturants. We tried soo many places to eat and had a great time!
