Top Local Tips for Cozumel

Get off the beaten path We found Cozumel to be drastically divided; the tourist Cozumel, and the real Cozumel. We had a lot of fun walking up to Avenida 65 or so, on one of the main drags, to eat at a roadside restaurant with great tacos and the like. It was safe and busy, and a nice complement to some of the restaurants recommended by our guide book, visited exclusively by other sunburnt tourists like ourselves. On the strip, though, I recommend you check out the McDonald's. It's the cheapest lunch on the strip (we normally avoid it at home in the US!), and has an awesome view with a very nice outside patio.

Taqueria el Pique and The Mission For awesome tacos and other authentic Mexican food visit Taqueria el Pique and The Mission. They are on the same street almost across from each other about a 10-15 minute walk from the main square of San Miguel. Go the the main square and head east on Juarez until the first stop light (there is a grocery store on the corner) and turn left. You come to both restaurants within 1 or 2 blocks. El Pique is a great taco joint with any sort of taco you could ever want. Try the Surtido (feet) tacos. Visit The Mission after 6:30pm as they have a fixin' bar set up with all sorts of good food. The Mission is not to be confused with another restaurant of the same (or similar) name near the waterfront that is much more expensive.
