Top Local Tips for Cancun

Mayan Ruins I would recommend seeing Uxmal and Ek Balam, since we found very few tourists there. Every time my husband and I travel to Mexico we spend a few nights in Cancun and then drive off with our rental car and explore the ruins of Mexico. Watch the speed limit for the police will stop you for sure and it ican be very expensive.. It is always is such an adventure to have your own car and then you can stop in little villages along the way or explore an old church. We find it easy to get around by car and then travel to different areas and spend a few nights away from Cancun. Tulum was good but you could not walk onto many of the sites. In Ek Balam you can do this and also Uxmal is so fantastic I cannot recommend it enough!!!! We have been to Chichen Itza before all the tour buses found it. I still recommend it but I think you need more than one day to explore it. I would suggest spending a night there.

The Market Place If you go to downtown Cancun, there are outside "flea markets" where the merchants pressure you to buy their wares. Go to the MarketPlace which is inside (airconditioned) and has everything you could ever want in terms of souveniers, jewelry, liquor, candy, tee shirts, pottery, etc. with the wonderful bonus of no hassle from the salespeople. You choose your items and check out at one counter. The prices seem to be better than haggling with the outside merchants.

Cheap Eats Look for the Hong Kong Express for good Chinese food for a great price. It is located on the lower level next to Lorito Joe's. This is across the street from the Marriott Casa. We fed a family of four for $20. A great change from the high resort prices in the in the hotel zone!
