Being English and used to the standards I receive many times I have visited the USA - this was a disaster - not a 4 star at all.
The room was small, dingy. Not properly cleaned for our arrival and the balcony with a sea view room was on the first floor, overlooking the roof of the buffet dining room - some 30m x 30m with the air conditioning vents as our view. No better alternatives available, but we could upgrade. Nice one! We did at $60 USD a night to a far superior room, on the second floor and without a balcony but it was worth it to get out of the standard room.
The rest of our stay can only be classed as inconsistent. With the exception of one waiter and one waitress we were treated with total indifference throughout our stay. In the buffet dining room we rarely had drinks delivered to our table at all. The restaurants were better, but not as speedy a service as the Spanish speaking guests received. The food in the buffet was not regularly replenished so it became a matter of 'get in early to have a full choice'. The quality of the food in the buffet and restaurants again was inconsistent. One day acceptable, the next abysmal. In all the restaurants plates were taken away from us without question and before the last fork full of food had reached your mouth. In the service restaurant our second courses were regularly just 'dumped' on our table before we had finished our first course. Boy - did we ever feel that they just wanted us out of there as quickly as possible?
In all the bars, except the VIP Lounge - you get access to that only if you have upgraded - we always got our drinks in plastic cups - not hard plastic glasses or real glasses but plastic cups!
Overall a disaster but on the plus side our 'upgrade room' and the public areas were always immaculately cleaned. From now on though, we'll be taking our Holidays (vacations) in the US.

What can I say, but this is an awful hotel. The staff are rude and offensive and will only help if you tip well and all the time. The shop in the hotel charges what they want and when this was reported to the manager he said that the shop is nothing to do with them. The food is poor and when things were wrong and we spoke to people about this, no effort was made. They just had us waiting till we eventually left. Overall, this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

I have just come back from the Oasis Viva Beach Resort to find they weren't as nice and friendly I had read about on other websites. There were not many "english speaking" workers, so you can get things you need. Even having my book of spanish didn't get a message across to their employees. I found this hotel to not respect the fact we spent alot of money to come to the resort to be treated like we are nothing important, like we are just another number. Some of the food was good, but it seems to be very repetitive each day at the buffet. They need to let people know we can go to the one other resturant, "Los Dumas" for lunch. That would have made my stay for food a bit better.

If I were to go back to Cancun, I wouldn't be staying at this resort.

Mediocre food at best and many staff members acted like your food or drink was coming right out of their paycheck. I asked for water before restaurant opened at 7 a.m. and was told to buy it from the gift shop or go back to my room for water. Asked for milk in my coffee to take to my room and was told "no". It took 2 days to get safe to work and there was no electric outlet in the bathroom so had to plug in curling iron into mini kitchen outlet in other room. Waiter asked why the 3 teenage boys, their skinny mother and I weren't on a diet when we order an appetizer and dinner. I will NEVER go to this CHEESY joint AGAIN.

Top Local Tips for Cancun

Off the beaten path Rent a car and go see all the things they don't offer on tours. You have to check out the Cenotes and Coba Maya Ruins.

location good shopping at La Isla but smaller shops closeby are abit tacky.

getting around Cancun Zone I recomend getting around best on foot. Don't be fooled by their prices...it's more than you think! you better off eating at restaurants that you're familiar because you run a high risk of getting food poison.
