Just got back from our 7 day vacation. My wife and I had a great time largely due to the super staff at this beautiful hotel. We booked an ocean view room with the "Royal Service", a little pricey at about $175 a night, but the extra amenities were worth it for us. Starting when we got out of our taxi the "Royal Service" began. We were greeted at the lobby, bypassed the regular check-in line, and escorted to the express check-in with complimentary drinks. We were given a tour of our room and a description of the amenities including continental breakfast, lunch time snacks and complimentary evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. We reserved a palapa, which resembled a queen sized bed under a thatched roof shade in the private pool area (very relaxing). We had brunch one morning at the buffet resteraunt with a nice view of the pool area with the ocean behind that. The food was pretty good but was also a little expensive at $20 per person. We finally broke down and scheduled a meeting (time share sales pitch) with a hotel rep. It wasn't bad. We got free breakfast, two free massages and a nice tour of the hotel and the really nice time share rooms that were available. We did not buy one though. This took about 2.5 hrs. but the massages more than made up for that. If you schedule a massage get their about 1.5 hrs early so you can experience the therapeutic showers, pools and sauna before the massage. Through out our stay the staff was excellent. Roger, Moises and Guillermo will make and serve your drinks, make reservations at resteraunts for you, get your taxi ready and even carry your things to the pool for you. They make you feel like anything is yours for the asking. At the pool, Joel got our palapa ready by laying out towels and lounge chairs and Enrique and Asuncion were very attentive, offering drinks and food by the pool. The staff at this hotel is really top notch. They would offer before you had to ask. Overall we had a fantastic experience at this hotel and can't wait to go back.

Rooms are huge and updated...great value for $115/night on lagoon side. Some construction going on in hotel causing some inconvience. Resturants were expensive at hotel but you can go to Pizza Hut or McDonalds across the street for a little cheaper food although it is higher than USA. When you check in get a MAS card and you can get free meals (BOGO) and late check out. You might check their meal plan...it was $100 per adult and $50 per child for all your food and drinks. Ocean is rough and can have strong undertow. I body surfed and was slammed into broken shells resulting in a nasty scrap. Reserve a taxi shuttle online before going...you will save $25-30 round trip. At airport a taxi is $40 and return trip from Gran Melia is $45 (4 people). Online it is $55-60 roundtrip. The first thing you will encounter after going though customs in Cancun are guys who pull you to booths for a pitch to visit Moon Palace Resorts which is an all inclusive resort to the south. If you are willing to listen to a sales pitch for 90 minutes or so at the resort you can get some great gifts. We did and got to visit the resort for 1 day...you can eat and drink as much as you want at 11 resturants and the pools (worth about $200 -300). They also gave my wife $200 in spa treatments at the resort. We got 4 tickets for a speed boat/snorkeling excursion worth $230. Boat ride was nice but would have liked more than 30 minutes to snorkel. We got 4 tickets for a day trip to Isla Murejes for a day worth about $250. This was OK but food not that great as it is at the resort. You get all you can eat/drink. They try to sell snorkeling, island tours, and dolphin packages on trip to island. The trip back from island was great...the Moon Palace resort guys put on a show. They also pay your taxi fare to resort and back worth $32. We stayed the day we went to the sales presentation to save us from getting a taxi another day. Don't let them pressure you into buying... you are not obligated and they have to give you your gifts. Just say 'Not Interested' over and over until it sinks in. Take the bus if you go out to eat...about $1.25 round trip/person ($13 pesos). Watch out for cars and buses when walking by the road...they drive very fast and tail gate.

My family and I just got back from staying at the Gran Melia, Cancun (9/24-10/1). If you like a room w/the ants and roaches then this is the place for you!! Gran Melia itself is beautiful from the outside...the lobby is also very pretty and tropical like. But when it came down to the rooms they are in need of some renovations. The staff was very friendly. We had a 2 room setup....1 room was a bedroom the other was a partial kitchen w/living room. The kitchen cabinets and counter top were old and dirty. I had to sanitize everything. I couldn't leave anything on the counter or in the cabinets because I was afraid the ants or roaches would take over. I cannot tell you how many roaches and ants I killed. We did have a great view from our balconies of the beach and pool. The maids do not respect the Do Not Disturb signs. They still knocked on our doors. I dont need my room cleaned every single day so I would put the sign out they still knocked or called. The air conditioner in the bedroom leaked. Your probably wondering why we didn't change our room.....well WE DID!!! The 1st room we were in was exactly the same. We did find out that they are slowly renovating portions of the Gran Melia but thats the area they try to sell you in their time-share presentation. The pools were great. There's even a kiddie pool, which our 1 yr old enjoyed. We ate a buffet breakfast one morning, which was really good. Other than that Cancun was great!!!!

I have spent a great deal of time in Mexico on both the east and west coasts. My husband and I were married at the Gran Melia two years ago and are on our way back in a few days. The Gran Melia staff was far superior to any other I have experienced. The wedding coordinators were fantastic, we were without a worry and our thirty guests had a wonderful time!!! The food was so tasty that we only ate out of the hotel one night out of the fourteen we were in Cancun! All staff, from the pool side waiters to the cleaning staff were fantastic!! We are returning again now two years later with our ten month old daughter and are looking forward to seeing all the friends we made during our previous stay!

Just got back tonite (Aug 7/05)
Had a great time but not much for the kids to do except swim at pool/beach. Food was outstanding, however most items at buffet were cold. Excellent selection for food and tons of it. You MUST reserve to "Proscutto's"...unbelievable food and service....top notch all the way. By the way do NOT go to this hotel UNLESS you go all inclusive, the prices will SHOCK you.
I made the mistake of opening up a bottle of water in my room (extra cost) and I was dinged 70 pesos (that's 7 dollars US , folks) FOR A BOTTLE OF WATER!! That burned my ass and was a little pissed off about that. Robbery as far as I'm concerned. One more bad thing I must mention...the hotel allows smoking pretty well anywhere which really sucked because you'd get losers everywhere smoking constantly....hated that. Anyway, it was a nice hotel and the beach was amazing.

My wife and I just returned from our stay at the Gran Melia and found it to be a GREAT experience. The hotel was fantastic, the beach great, and the service outstanding. I can't offer any insight to the food on site, we had too much fun exploring and eating out. We traveled downtown the first day, and found some great values on party supplies. Much cheaper than the hotel. The bus system is great. one way fare is 6 pesos(about 60 cents) what a value.
