Just got back from our 7 day vacation. My wife and I had a great time largely due to the super staff at this beautiful hotel. We booked an ocean view room with the "Royal Service", a little pricey at about $175 a night, but the extra amenities were worth it for us. Starting when we got out of our taxi the "Royal Service" began. We were greeted at the lobby, bypassed the regular check-in line, and escorted to the express check-in with complimentary drinks. We were given a tour of our room and a description of the amenities including continental breakfast, lunch time snacks and complimentary evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. We reserved a palapa, which resembled a queen sized bed under a thatched roof shade in the private pool area (very relaxing). We had brunch one morning at the buffet resteraunt with a nice view of the pool area with the ocean behind that. The food was pretty good but was also a little expensive at $20 per person. We finally broke down and scheduled a meeting......

Rooms are huge and updated...great value for $115/night on lagoon side. Some construction going on in hotel causing some inconvience. Resturants were expensive at hotel but you can go to Pizza Hut or McDonalds across the street for a little cheaper food although it is higher than USA. When you check in get a MAS card and you can get free meals (BOGO) and late check out. You might check their meal plan...it was $100 per adult and $50 per child for all your food and drinks. Ocean is rough and can have strong undertow. I body surfed and was slammed into broken shells resulting in a nasty scrap. Reserve a taxi shuttle online before going...you will save $25-30 round trip. At airport a taxi is $40 and return trip from Gran Melia is $45 (4 people). Online it is $55-60 roundtrip. The first thing you will encounter after going though customs in Cancun are guys who pull you to booths for a pitch to visit Moon Palace Resorts which is an all inclusive resort to the south. If you are......

My family and I just got back from staying at the Gran Melia, Cancun (9/24-10/1). If you like a room w/the ants and roaches then this is the place for you!! Gran Melia itself is beautiful from the outside...the lobby is also very pretty and tropical like. But when it came down to the rooms they are in need of some renovations. The staff was very friendly. We had a 2 room setup....1 room was a bedroom the other was a partial kitchen w/living room. The kitchen cabinets and counter top were old and dirty. I had to sanitize everything. I couldn't leave anything on the counter or in the cabinets because I was afraid the ants or roaches would take over. I cannot tell you how many roaches and ants I killed. We did have a great view from our balconies of the beach and pool. The maids do not respect the “Do Not Disturb” signs. They still knocked on our doors. I don’t need my room cleaned every single day so I would put the sign out they still knocked or called. The air......

I have spent a great deal of time in Mexico on both the east and west coasts. My husband and I were married at the Gran Melia two years ago and are on our way back in a few days. The Gran Melia staff was far superior to any other I have experienced. The wedding coordinators were fantastic, we were without a worry and our thirty guests had a wonderful time!!! The food was so tasty that we only ate out of the hotel one night out of the fourteen we were in Cancun! All staff, from the pool side waiters to the cleaning staff were fantastic!! We are returning again now two years later with our ten month old daughter and are looking forward to seeing all the friends we made during our previous stay!

Just got back tonite (Aug 7/05)
Had a great time but not much for the kids to do except swim at pool/beach. Food was outstanding, however most items at buffet were cold. Excellent selection for food and tons of it. You MUST reserve to "Proscutto's"...unbelievable food and service....top notch all the way. By the way do NOT go to this hotel UNLESS you go all inclusive, the prices will SHOCK you.
I made the mistake of opening up a bottle of water in my room (extra cost) and I was dinged 70 pesos (that's 7 dollars US , folks) FOR A BOTTLE OF WATER!! That burned my*** and was a little pissed off about that. Robbery as far as I'm concerned. One more bad thing I must mention...the hotel allows smoking pretty well anywhere which really sucked because you'd get losers everywhere smoking constantly....hated that. Anyway, it was a nice hotel and the beach was amazing.
