Our need to get out of the cold combined with a bad economy here in the Northeast US had me searching for deals. Cancun is close (about 3 hours by plane), safe, clean, and usually quite accomodating. The Flamingo was a low price with a decent (not great) bunch of reviews. Booked and stayed 2/8/09-2/15/09.
First, Orbitz showed a "special" allowing those of us not choosing all inclusive to have 10% off all food and drink. DIDN'T happen. The hotel denied any knowledge even after I offered to show them the ad on Orbitz. Then I asked about the free wireless internet. Again, no idea by the hotel staff. In fact, I was told it did not exist. Fortunatly, a few days later, another guest informed us it was available, but ONLY in the hotel lobby.
The smaller restaurant, by the beach was a nice value with good food at lunch. The larger buffet restaurant was open for breakfast, lunch, dinner; not very good at all. The food, except for the fruit, always looked recycled, and sometimes tasted like it.
The room had its own set of problems. I only wish I could upload pictures here. First, I had "upgraded" to an ocean view junior suite. What they don't tell you, is it is downstairs, on the lowest level of the hotel. I'll admit, the view was spectacular from the terrace and the ocean sounds were great all night. But the lower level has lower level problems. First the bathroom ceiling tile had what looked to be black mold. Noted mold and tons of dust on the bathroom vent as well. Not sure about the air conditioning vent. We both developed a nasty cough since staying there. Also in the bathroom it looked like more mold was simply painted over and it was working its way out of the paint layer. The shower drain would always back up, leaving you standing in 4 inches of wash water. The toilet always leaked and between the toilet tank and the base was a sturdy piece of cardboard wedged to try to prevent this leaking. It did not work. The room kept a musty, moldy smell unless you kept the patio door open for long periods.
There was no latch strike plate so you couldn't lock the bathroom. The room door's strike plate was very loose requiring a sturdy pull or push to make the door lock. The cleaning crew did not bother to pull the door causing our room to be left open throughout the day, unless we happened to come back to the room.
There was a small refrigerator in the room. The bottom door had some kind of reddish brown and black substance.
The floors were always moist and sort of slimy. Housekeeping was sporatic. Sometimes they would bring you hand towels, sometimes not. Washcloths must have been in short supply; we got one the first day which was taken back the second. Didn't see another until our last day. One glass in the room; it took 3 days of begging the staff to get another. I happen to know the sheets were never changed, just put back on.
Too few chairs at the pools, usually all "taken" before 8am. No hot tub.
All of this and pictures were taken to the front desk staff and the next day to the manager. In fact we took it there a couple of times. We were told, "sorry" and someone would "fix" it. Eventually they did replace to tile, make the door shut, and stop the toilet leaking. The rest was left. The staff had no sympathy and offered no recompense for our problems and refused to change our room. Guess they don't care if someone comes back or if there are bad reviews.
Think I'll stay elsewhere for my Yankee dollars from now on.
