After seeing all the positive reviews for the Hotel Dominion 1912 including being rated a Fodor's Choice I expected to have an excellent experience. For our vacation, we stayed 3 nights in a Deluxe Room in the new section of the hotel. I found the room not up to the hype and the room does not match the comforts I usually find at this price point. The room has air conditioning that works well but the computerized thermostat is so confusing my husband, who writes computer programs, had to ask the staff to come up and show him how to use it. The staff indicated that there are instructions but if a thermostat requires instructions it is too confusing!
The rooms do not have electronic key locks; they are a regular metal key with the room number on it. Security concerns eliminated those types of locks years ago, but this section of the hotel is only 3 years old. The lighting in the room can only be compared to a fine dining restaurant. This was "okay" in the main room but it is not useful in a bathroom. The room has lots of light switches but it confusing what switch went to what light. The bathroom has a sink/vanity made out of opaque plastic but this modern design traded away space to set toiletries. We ended up using the floor to set items down. In addition, the waste can they put in the bathroom is the size of a coffee can, could definitely be larger. The bathtub/shower could be improved. The bathtub was normal size -- no Jacuzzi size and the shower head was mounted to the ceiling and pours straight down. This type is hard to work with. The bathroom had no fan in it, and thus the mirror was fogged after taking a shower. I had to wait for the mirror to clear up since there is no other mirror in the room. There is one unit with two medium size drawers to store things. No drawers by the night stand or in the desk. This is not up to standard of this price of a hotel room. We ended up living out of suitcases. Parking is $14.00 per day -- that was never mentioned ahead of time.
On the positive side, the room has convenient electrical and internet connections on top of the desk. You do not have to crawl around behind furniture to find a plug for your computer.
Service was very good. My husband ended up ill during the end of our stay and they were very helpful in finding us a Doctor since we are not from Canada. There was a very nice duvet on the bed and the bed was comfortable.
The closet had a nice light that comes on when you open the door. It was the only place in the room with enough light. Computer/internet connection is available in the lobby. I found it easy to use. Continental breakfast was better than some I have had. It included cheese, hard boiled eggs, multiple types of breads, yogurt and dried fruit. The room is not decorated like a regular hotel room but has a more modern feel to it. This is nice but by doing so they eliminated functionality you would expect.
In summary, if I go back to Quebec City I would not stay at the Hotel Dominion. It was not a "bad" experience but between the positive on service and the negatives on the room I would rate the experience average.
