Service Great but Room not up to Expectation

After seeing all the positive reviews for the Hotel Dominion 1912 including being rated a Fodor's Choice I expected to have an excellent experience. For our vacation, we stayed 3 nights in a Deluxe Room in the new section of the hotel. I found the room not up to the hype and the room does not match the comforts I usually find at this price point. The room has air conditioning that works well but the computerized thermostat is so confusing my husband, who writes computer programs, had to ask the staff to come up and show him how to use it. The staff indicated that there are instructions but if a thermostat requires instructions it is too confusing!
The rooms do not have electronic key locks; they are a regular metal key with the room number on it. Security concerns eliminated those types of locks years ago, but this section of the hotel is only 3 years old. The lighting in the room can only be compared to a fine dining restaurant. This was "okay" in the main room but it is not useful in a bathroom. The room has lots of light switches but it confusing what switch went to what light. The bathroom has a sink/vanity made out of opaque plastic but this modern design traded away space to set toiletries. We ended up using the floor to set items down. In addition, the waste can they put in the bathroom is the size of a coffee can, could definitely be larger. The bathtub/shower could be improved. The bathtub was normal size -- no Jacuzzi size and the shower head was mounted to the ceiling and pours straight down. This type is hard to work with. The bathroom had no fan in it, and thus the mirror was fogged after taking a shower. I had to wait for the mirror to clear up since there is no other mirror in the room. There is one unit with two medium size drawers to store things. No drawers by the night stand or in the desk. This is not up to standard of this price of a hotel room. We ended up living out of suitcases. Parking is $14.00 per day -- that was never mentioned ahead of time.

On the positive side, the room has convenient electrical and internet connections on top of the desk. You do not have to crawl around behind furniture to find a plug for your computer.
Service was very good. My husband ended up ill during the end of our stay and they were very helpful in finding us a Doctor since we are not from Canada. There was a very nice duvet on the bed and the bed was comfortable.
The closet had a nice light that comes on when you open the door. It was the only place in the room with enough light. Computer/internet connection is available in the lobby. I found it easy to use. Continental breakfast was better than some I have had. It included cheese, hard boiled eggs, multiple types of breads, yogurt and dried fruit. The room is not decorated like a regular hotel room but has a more modern feel to it. This is nice but by doing so they eliminated functionality you would expect.

In summary, if I go back to Quebec City I would not stay at the Hotel Dominion. It was not a "bad" experience but between the positive on service and the negatives on the room I would rate the experience average.

Fabulous hotel!!

from falconhtcm
Let me start by saying, i picked this hotel because of its great reviews... and it was everything i hoped for and more!! My husband and I were travelling without our children for a three night stay- it was PERFECT!! A beautiful, spacious room with every little detail you could imagine. (for example complimentary apples and bottled water replaced every day in the room) The staff was fabulous-always helpful and cheery. The attention to detail was the best i have ever seen in a hotel. Even down to having little direction cards preprinted for all the major side trips you might take. The buffet breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious with choices for all sorts of dietary needs and wants. The location was lovely with a fabulous little bistro right on the corner called Brigantin(though the choices are endless for eating we actually ate at Brigantin several times because it was so good). There are many areas to explore in Quebec and you really need at least 3 days minimum to experience it. My advice is do your homework ahead of time , so you know all the different sections to check out. Enjoy!

Absolutely great!

An amazing hotel in a terrific place. Arrived with husband, mother and small dog in tow, very rainy afternoon. Our room was great -- very spacious, all amenities, good lighting, fresh fruit, chocolate, water, etc. Nothing missing. Staff incredibly helpful. We inquired immediately if it would be possible to find a puppy-sitter to stay with our dog, not wanting to leave him alone. Within an hour, they had lined up a wonderful lady, who also volunteers at the zoo--loved animals. We scheduled her for the next day -- 9 - 4 and then dinner, 6:30 - 10. She arrived on the DOT, all prepared for the day -- wore our dog out with walks and play. We were able to do our sightseeing and know that everything was fine "back home." The entire staff was very dog-friendly and helpful -- for those people traveling with well-behaved pets, I would recommend this place highly. We will visit again, with our without our dog!!

A fantastic hotel--we can't say anything negative about the service but there is one strange little thing: some of the staff seem to have a preference for non-Canadians. Various friends and family that we have sent to the hotel find it difficult to speak French, even though most of us are fluently bilingual. In fact, they all assume (want to assume??) that we are American. We speak French and they all reply in English. We didn't really twig to it until last week. Upon checkout with an old chum who resides in Delhi, Ontario, one of the seemingly exceptional staff actually turned her face up at us when she discovered we were from the Greater Toronto area! She actually changed her attitude right before our eyes! She had assumed we were Americans and for her (a beautiful woman actually--of the Liz Taylor school), a guest coming from Ontario was somehow a 'bad' thing. Or so it felt. At two hundred a night, does it really matter where the VISA card was issued? We canvassed our Canadian friends and family and while they all raved about the hotel and the overall service, most did recall a similar experience. The New Yorkers claimed it was perfect right until they stepped in their cab.

While we strongly believe that this couldn't possibly be the accepted norm do yourself a favour: if you are a Canadian from Ontario or out West, tell them you are from New York or California or even New Zealand--you won't feel like you've just committed a crime when you do check out.

TO THE MANAGEMENT: THERE IS NO ROOM FOR POLITICS IN THE HOTEL GAME.

Wonderful Hotel

Dominion 1912 is an exceptional hotel. It manages to be both stylish and comfortable at the same time. The hotel staff are courteous and friendly and the rooms are delightful. The location in the lower-town portion of Old Quebec is superb.

A fantastic find!

The Dominion 1912 sets the standard for quality in the boutique hotel category. Bose radios in the rooms, turndown service like no other, beds you wishes you had at home--and a staff so corteous and friendly, they go out of their way to be of help. Our only regret is we stayed for just two nights!

Fantastic hotel

My husband and I stayed here in March 2004 and loved it. The hotel is stylish and hip, but also very comfortable and inviting. The public areas are well decorated and the staff is helpful and friendly. We stayed on the 8th floor with a nice view of the city and a very comfortable room. Location is also great-- tucked away on one of the charming small streets of Basse-Ville, it's close to restaurants, antique shops, the Museum of Civilization (which is quite interesting), and an easy walk to the Upper Town. We will definitely stay at Hotel Dominion 1912 again and would highly recommend it.

The Reason We Visit Quebec

We visit Quebec just so we can stay at the Dominion Hotel. Every aspect of the hotel and its staff are perfect. It is charming, sophisticated and comfortable.

A home in Q.C.

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Dominion 1912 is the standard fpr subdued class. The quality of the room and friendliness of the staff made my wife and me feel at home. I don't believe that we would even consider another hotel in Q.C., not even the green-roofed one on the hill!

Excellent Service, Staff and Amenities

from vector1701
Excellent Hotel...We stayed there over the Winter Carnival and it was fantastic. The room was nice and big, the bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever been in, the complimentary breakfast was very good, high-speed internet free in the lobby and available in every room. The hotel is very modern in design and the hotel staff were more than happy to assist in every question and need. Treat yourself and stay at this great place.

One of the best hotels in the world - not kidding

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Dominion 1912 in Quebec City BLEW US AWAY -- we think it's certainly the best hotel in North America. It's a combination of hotel types we haven't seen done like this: Picture the opulence of a Mandarin or the best of the Four Seasons Hotels with the hipness and boutique size of an Ian Schrager hotel. Except that the rooms here -- certainly our room -- are huge, and we had a regular standard room.

The room decor is as stunning as the lobby: Counterposed to the exposed brick and beams in each room is stunning, sleek, contemporary furniture right out of the pages of Metropolitan Home magazine. The beds linens and duvet were the most luxurious and comfortable we've ever slept in.

The staff was fantastic -- and the free continential breakfast each morning is actually more than that: A lovely spread of French cheeses and French breads, with sleek silver tea service.

And to think, we paid just under $200 US a night including tax and this was last summer, in the height of the tourist season in Quebec City

Now we can't tell you we think Quebec City itself is all its cracked up to be -- it feels like a small Disney Epcot Pavilion, too tidy and touristy-studied. We're big fans of nearby Montreal, one of the world's great cities. But we have to tell you, the Dominion 1912 is enough to make us want to return to Quebec City. We wonder if its sister hotel in Montreal, the Germain, is this great.
