How many times can you say you stayed 30 seconds away from the Bell Center and payed only 60 dollars for a hotel room. This hotel is great for people seeing events downtown Montréal.

A Good Cheap Find

Sometimes it is really nice to at least get what you paid for. Everyone was really friendly, the accommodations were reasonable. There was a gym of sorts because it is the YWCA, but I did not have an opportunity to see the facilities myself. The location was centrally located in the English speaking part of the city. The room was newly renovated. I definitely recommend staying here if you are a budget traveler who prefers a roof and bed, as opposed to, a tent and sleeping bag.

Located in a safe area downtown on block from the metro. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Rooms were very clean and modern. The only complaint is that the beds were a bit hard. Otherwise, very nice area!

The Montreal Y hotel is located within walking distance of the downtown area, and is also right near public transportation. It seemed to be a safe area even at night for a woman walking at night. The clerks were extremely helpful. Rooms are small like a college dorm room, but very nice. You can even cook in the communal kitchen on each floor. Very reasonable rates. Rates a 10 for value for the budget or business traveler who just needs a clean safe place to sleep at night.

I stayed for 5 nights at the Hotel Y des Femmes in september 2005. I wasn't sure what to expect, since the hotel is run by the Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA), but hey: it was cheap and downtown. Turns out to be a normal Hotel, run by YWCA for fundraising purposes for their social programs or something.
I attended a congress at the palais de congres. This is 20 minutes walking distance. The Hotel is perfect. Don't expect bellboys carrying your luggage, but at 75 canadian dollars a night with a private bathroom, I'll carry my own bags. The room was not small, it was clean and towels and bedspread cleaned dailey of course. Bathroom was clean and no defects or rubbish.
Cut a long story short: good hotel if your needs are below Hilton level. Friendly service. No breakfast service because of renovation of the restaurant, but plenty of choice in the neighborhood. I would defenitely visit Y des Femmes again.

This recently refurbished hotel allows for a comfortable stay in downtown Montreal at a third of the cost of most of the nearby larger hotels and within walking distance of the Hilton, the hotel where our event took place. The hotel occupies the 7th floor, while normal "Y" activity takes place in the rest of the building, which results in a quiet and secure environment.

Top Local Tips for Montreal

Avoid Aerobus! I would only use the Aerobus from the airport when travelling on my own. Otherwise, it is better to take a taxi -- which is $30 + tip flat rate. The aerobus is very unreliable coming from Montreal. We almost missed our flight home because we were waiting so long. We eventually split a cab with some kind fellow travellers heading for the same flight (and waiting for the same stupid bus).

From the Airport Take a taxi from the airport. When you take the taxi to any hotel in the downtown Montreal area, the fee is $35.00 **English speakers** Don't let the driver tell you that it is a minimum of $35.00, it's not a minimum, it's a flat fee. Some of the drivers (not all) try to take advantage of those who do not speak French and can't read the sign on the cab window (which is in French). Fortunately for me, I can read French much better than I can speak French.

Schwartz's Deli Don't leave Montreal witout experiencing a smoked meat sandwich from the famous Schwartz's Deli. It's a metro ride but absolutely worth it - a contender for last meal according to my husband! Be prepared to queue to eat in.
