Too many SPIDERS!!!

We recently stayed at the Glen Miller Motel, located north of Wiarton, Ontario, Canada on Highway 6. Their web site (on the "About Us" page) says, "We will provide clean and well maintained rooms and a morning hospitality suite second to none." I do not totally agree with this statement. So here's the true story from our experience... Now I have to say that the owners were very friendly. Our daughters played with their daughter in the motel playground area, which is only accessible through the office since it is fenced in (good security plan). They had a good time. The playground was the primary reason for staying at the motel, besides the location on our way up the Bruce Peninsula. We were moved to another room because some hard partiers from the night before caused a major cleanup need which left the carpet still wet from cleaning. I am glad that they were honest on this. The room that we got was #7, and it was too far away from the office to get a wireless internet signal. There were 10 rooms. So that means that a good portion of the rooms do NOT have wireless internet access capability. Being a computer guy, I know that a wireless repeater would probably do the trick to resolve the problem. I suspect that the main cause of the lack of signal is that the walls between the rooms are thick concrete block, with a painted pattern on the walls that makes it look good. So the wireless internet advertisement is not completely valid. They do offer free long distance from the room, which I suspect is internet phone, but cannot say for sure. The room that we had was very simple. The decor seemed a bit out of date. (This is an older motel.) I prefer queen size over double beds, but we got double. The air conditioner was a bit tricky to operate, but was figured out after a call to the front desk (it is a synchronization between the unit and the wall control). There were 2 water bottles by the ice bucket, which we soon determined were there because the water from the sink did not taste good. So we were glad for the bottles, but there was no mention of the bad tasting water. And when I got ice, I had to ask at the front desk for it and they got it for me from a chest freezer that is not really accessible by the customers. Now their ads say that they are a clean, well maintained motel. I have to disagree. Although the linens were clean (which is most important), the carpet did have some spots. But the worst was the insects, primarily SPIDERS. Once dusk arrived, the outside of the motel was crawling with big and little spiders! To top that off, there were spiders in our room! I removed 3 big spiders in the bathroom - 1 on the ceiling right above the sink, 1 on the shower wall, and 1 on the wall above the towel rack. And I had to use a magazine because they had no fly swatter in the room. There were also small spiders in most corners of the room. One even dropped down in front of me in the doorway when I attempted to leave the room. I mentioned the spider problem to the man that evening, and he acknowledged it, but kind of shrugged it off. So I did not sleep well that night. When checking out the next morning, I suggested to the lady that the spiders be taken care of, as I have never seen so many spiders at a motel before. She acknowledged that this was the worst spider problem that they have ever had, and said that they had sprayed and use a pressure sprayer twice a week on the outside. Well water ain't gonna do it, eh? If they checked the rooms thoroughly, they could see that there are spiders there that need to be removed. There were even dead bugs behind the toilet on the bathroom floor (from the spiders meals, I suppose). I noticed that they hired some young woman to clean their rooms. Well she apparently isn't taking care of the spiders and other bugs very well when cleaning. It should not take much to clean those bugs out daily and spray some interior perimeter insect spray around the room walls at least once a week. If that doesn't work, professional extermination services should be hired regularly. The bottom line is that customers should not have to put up with this insect problem! It is unclean, and could be unhealthy. I was bit by a spider at a hotel once, and they refunded my entire night's stay, which was very nice of them. It took 2 weeks before the bite went away in that incident. Thank God that none of us were bitten that night at the Glen Miller Motel! The breakfast was good, but it was not the "morning hospitality suite second to none" as their web site says. Apparently these folks have not stayed at many of the hotel chains that offer free breakfast, which are a bit better than this was. The price was $80 CDN plus tax, which ended up about $99 total. That's pretty high for a small, older motel that's just off the highway (nothing really scenic at that spot). Even with the U.S. exchange rate, it is still too high because the exchange rate is very low now. If I returned to the Wiarton, Ontario area, I would not stay at this hotel due to the above mentioned problems, especially the spiders, which is unacceptable to me. I hope that the motel owners will take the problems on seriously and keep at it. If they can correct those problems, it would be a good place to stay.

Breakfast Meant For a King

When I first reserved with this motel, I was a little skeptical. They dont use a computerized system, and were unable to give me a confirmation number. Likewise I was not impressed about having to sleep in a double bed. I neednt have been worried. I have never in my life stayed in a motel like this one. The room was huge, they provided me a wireless card for my computer so i could access their high speed internet, they put on a continental breakfast buffet the likes of which I have never seen, let alone had included with my room. And to top it all off, all my longdistance calling was FREE. I dont know about any one elce, but I have never before stayed in a motel that didnt charge for long distance calling. While there they were doing some upgrades to a couple of the rooms, and were putting in bunk beds. I plan on returning there with my family in the near future. They also have a playground, which even tempted me.
