This hotel was great...the breakfast the next morning in the restaurant was fantastic. My room was great, I had trouble hooking up to the internet to work and when I called the front desk everyone was so helpful! My regular hotel was booked that week day so I stayed at the Grand, and I'm glad I did.

It was a wonderful weekend. We were celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed the hotel and the city.

Free Adult Channels? Kid unfriendly!

from jack47
I was surprised to see these really positive comments about this hotel.
I don't beleive a word. Yah its nice but all these comments from people all over the world? This is not a world popular hotel. The service stinks. The guy that said free adult channels is good is wrong with families. Try to explain porn to a horrified 7 year old girl, and try to get your 13 year old son to be motivated to go anywhere after seeing "dorothy do kansas".

Overall a terrible experience.

An excellent Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Grand is a really good hotel, as others have said the area isn't great but the service and facilities of the hotel more than make up for this. The pool is excellent, we were there for a week in Sept 2002 and I was able to swim each morning in an empty pool, bliss!!. Again as previously mentioned the breakfast is out of this world, to sit on the terrace in the morning sunshine and watch the squirrels was an amazing experience (we are obviously sheltered her in Northern Ireland - little sunshine and few squirrels) The staff were excellent and the limo to the airport was a surprising extra treat.

the grand was great

My family of five stayed for three nights at the Grand and we all loved it. The rooms had great views and were very quiet. It had a great pool and spa indoors and even a hot tub on the roof, which the kids used even when snowing. The free breakfast was an added bonus and always enjoyable. The staff were great and very very helpful. Absolutely loved the Grand!!!!!

Good but not Great

The best thing about this hotel is the free breakfast bufett (although it is the same exact thing every day and if you are there more than a few days you'll probably get tired of it) and the fitness center. The fitness center and sap are very nice and they offer many spa services, I had a pedicure and eyebrow shaping (not the best I have ever had but satisfactory). The worse thing is the location and the room. The room had a queen sized bed although it stated that it was a king. The bed was about a foot away from the bathroom door and the TV's were small compared to most hotels I have stayed in. Parking is pricey $16.00 plus $2.50 tax per day. Oh yeah, and the front dest person was new and couldn't answer most of my questions. I only paid $100 per night but I have stayed in much nicer hotels for that price.

at The Grand

Whenever in Toronto I only have one hotel that I stay....The Grand. The service is extraordinary, the restaurant and bare are amazing and I enjoy drinking vodka on the patio.....especialy when I am on expense report. Ask for Heidi or Jackie at the front desk......when they are not traveling with the guests they are a temendous help. Melissa and Jen get an honorable mention as well! The restaurant manager is Ricardo, his son Andreas works there as well....they are always willing to help out......especially the female guests! The brains of the operation are Michael and Terrance.....ask for them by name if you have any problems. Long time guests Leon, John and Jim are always entertaining. This hotel is a winner!

Hidden Toronto Gem.

from CharlestonDigital
When visiting Toronto, The Grand is a hidden gem. This hotel was previously the Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters, so it has character. The rooms I have stayed in we very nice, with wonderful views. The two Jacuzzi's on the roof that provide a spectacular view is a plus. Rock Star style...Bring a bottle of champagne and a cigar to the top and you could pass for one of the Rolling Stones. A good thing about this hotel is it is in a good location without being in the direct center of tourism mania. You can relax in style. My fiancée and I always stay there. I recommend it over the Royal York. Which is overpriced for the 1800's, small, smelly, mold box they call a junior suite. If you paid a comparable amount at The Grand your room would look like the entrance hall in the Sistine Chapel and the Bell Hop would hand feed you. Really, for the price, they make me feel like a king every time I stay there.

It could have been fabulous, but.....

When we finally got settled, the hotel was fabulous--very spacious for our 5 person family, great full breakfast, and the pool and rooftop jacuzzi were beyond comparison.BUT! The hotel messed up our reservation, saying we were "no-shows" for not having arrived the day earlier. Once they finally got us situated, we thought everything was "grand", including the price adjustment due to the horrid problems we had on checking in. Thus, imagine our surprise when our credit card reflected an extra $200 and we were charged a higher rate than was on our final bill on checking out. I gave up trying to fix it after a half dozen calls to the manager. So, take home message: Insist on a written confirmation of your reservation, and save your receipt until your credit card statement comes. Very disappointed in the end--it could have been fabulous.

Overall, very good

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Grand a few times and overall, I have been pleased. The rooms have been different each time, some were small. The mattresses are very comfortable, probably the best I have experienced in a hotel. The parking garage is very cramped and a bit difficult to maneuver around in if you have a large vehicle. The workout area is health club quality and huge with several treadmills, steppers and free weights. The included breakfast buffet is by far what differentiates the Grand from other downtown hotels. It is truly incredible.

Excellent.

We stayed here in December 2002. It was brilliant, clean, tidy and the management were really helpful. The hotel was a about 10 mins walk from the city centre and although the area around the hotel wasnt good we walked around with no problems and their is a free limo to the buisness district. The food was good and the restaurant was lovely. Well decorated. Although the hotel seems to be geared towards business people I would recommend that families stay here for a quiet time and they have a large gym and indoor pool. I even managed to get in the hot tub on the hotel roof one night with the temperatures reaching -25oC.
The view was amazing dont miss it. Great value for very little money.

Great Hotel, Great City and very very cheap!!!!

Great Family Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed overnight 8/30. Just to take the kids to do something before school started (ages 6&4). Was the perfect set up for staying with children. They had their own little space (a room w/ a pull out bed) complete with a tv and vcr. We were somewhat seperated with a queen sized bed and another tv/dvd combo. Was nice not having to try to get them to sleep and then be extra quiet trying to watch tv while they are basically right on top of you in the other bed. We did order room service which was excellent. The included breakfast came complete with scrambled eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage and, all the other continental breakfast usuals. The kids loved the pool and the rooftop jacuzzis. The workout facility was very nice however, I did think the steam room in the ladies locker room was pretty gross. Just didnt smell right. Overall, really good experience and i think a great place to go if you have to travel with your little ones.

Top Local Tips for Toronto

HEAD to Queen Street shopping for Chinatown/Kensington Market you just need to walk north 25 steps or south 100 steps and you can get on either street car heading west to take you to the heart of TDOT. If you want to walk to the eaton centre, just walk out the front door of The Grand Hotel and walk about 25 steps north to the corner of Jarvis and Dundas now cross the street and walk west for about 2 blocks and get downstairs the Eaton Centre to the Subway TTC and buy a day pass for the TTC. It is approx $8 can and a family of 5?? can ride all day on the one pass BARGAIN!!!

sightseeing Wear very comfortable walking shoes. Also the Zoo was not as great as we thought it would be.

Where to eat Jack Astors on Front St. AWSOME food. Armadillo's next door to Jack Astor's is also AWSOME and less expensive with GIGANTIC portions!
