t stay there again

from bobtravis42
New years Eve,2003 was my first, and last experience at the royal york.
On all previous trips to Toronto I stayed at the Sheraton Centre and loved it. This time I thought we'd try the Royal York because of its proximity to Union Station. This trip was booked far in advance, but when we arrived to check in, they never heard of us! Luckily, they had a room, told me they were upgrading us to a "view" room because of the inconvenience at the desk. I found the room too small, interestingly the closet was actually bigger than the bathroom. Two of the lamps in the room were defective. They would turn on when you played with the switch. Being it was New Years Eve,I expected a little noise in the halls in the evening, but the yelling and screaming going on all evening was non stop. Then at 2:41a.m. my phone rang, waking us both out of a sound sleep. It was a local pizza delivery man down in the lobby.
We didn't order Pizza! I complained to the desk the next morning as to why outside people had access to telephone my room in the middle of the night. The night manager apologized profusely, and treated us to breakfast, which was very nice, but all in all I think I'll return to the Sheraton Centre next time. The Royal York is, in my opinion an old hotel that, although renovated, still just doesn't do it for me

Eight people including myself checked into the Royal York for New Year's Eve. The moment we checked in, it was a pleasure. Very pleasent and friendly staff, We all stayed in the Fairmont king n/s rooms from the 4th floor up to the 11th and our rooms were bigger than expected. Other people told me to be prepared to sleep in a very small room but it was the opposite. It was the size of an average hotel room. We were not crammed at all. Very comfortable bed and pillows. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. Beautiful view of Lake Ontario. Nice pool and hotub. The only complaint I have is our bathrobes were not in our room when we checked in but not a big deal. ( There were robe hooks in the bathroom too ) Very comfortable hotel and you felt liked your business was appreciated. Very accomodating and would defintely recommend staying here. It was a fantastic way to ring in the New Year.

t Everything...

I will begin by saying that this hotel is extremely nice visually inside and out. Very clean, quiet, and relaxing. It has a lot of other things going for it as well: Convenient location, shopping, access to Rail Station underground.

Having said all that, we found the room (queen, non-smoking, floor 13) to be THE SMALLEST room we have ever stayed in (yes...we realize that this is an older hotel). We literally had to step over the corners of the bed because there was so little space between pieces of furniture.
This room was described as "a very special room" by the front desk. For the $$$ we spent, we expected just a little more room to navigate the room.

Another thing that really stood out to us was the fact that at check-in on Friday afternoon and check-out on Sunday, there were insufficient staff onhand. At check-in, we waited at least 20 minutes because only one employee was available! The line of frustrated travelers was 12 people long when we bothered to count. At check-out on Sunday, they had three employees (but the line of people waiting to check-out was even longer!)

We found the employees to be helpful, but not cordial as we expected.

Overall, it's a great hotel. Just be aware of the cramped quarters and possible employee issues.

The Best Sleep EVER!

I live in Toronto I was tired and did not want to take the T.T.C home from a game at the SkyDome. I decided to sleep at the Royal York. Fast Check-In, Beutiful Rooms (Kinda Small but who cares) The bed made me fall alseep so fast and it was the best sleep I EVER had. The staff were real nice. Would sleep there again.

rooms too small

from mkellerman
Just reterned from a 3 day trip from Toronto. Booked a room at the Royal York and called them directly 3 times to verify the number of people and type of room. We were told 3 times a King room with a roll-away. Well we arrived and were told by the Gold floor personel that we could not have a King room with a cot because the rooms were too small...and boy were they right. Do yourself a favor...spend a little more and stay at the Park Hyat, the rooms are much larger and it"s in a better location.

Enjoyed the Royal York!

My fiance and I stayed here for 4 nights in early November. We really enjoyed our stay. We upgraded to the Fairmont Gold level, and enjoyed and appreciated the extras (breakfast, hors d'oeuvres, newspaper, concierge). We also enjoyed the Library bar and the martinis! The room was clean, the bed was firm. We could not have asked for anything more.
A great introduction to Toronto!

Th trip of a lifetime!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had booked Fairmont hotels for the trip of a lifetime. We had planned to stay in seven Fairmonts in seven locations from East to West Canada. We arrived very late and were shown to a tiny room. The staff were very kind and changed this to a larger room the following day. We went to find the fine dining room, "The Epic," to enjoy our breakfast.
This dinig room, according to the information leaflet in our room would be open and waiting to serve us.We found it, but it was closed! We were then sent to "Rick's Place" where, the food was good, and the service also good, but had we wished to eat from formica tables surrounded by a lot of children we would not have chosen what w were led to believe was a five star hotel. We enquired at the reception desk as to how we might up-grade our stay, willing to pay, but we were told that we could not.
We had watched the video presentation about how we could be president for a day, and wished to do just that, but we were told that we could only do this next time we stayed, having earned points. Next time we stay? Next time we stay, it will not be at this hotel.

We had our Honeymoon in Toronto in early April of this year.We arived at the hotel with 36hrs of non sleep behind us... We pulled the old 'We just got married routine' and were promptly upraded from a standard room to a room that was the size of a small house. Sofas, 2 tv's, marble bathroom 2 kingsize beds... I could go on... (admittedly our view was nondescript; but thats what the CN Tower is there for. It is smack bang in the middle of everything. I stressed out at the fact that you found yourself (unconsciously) playing 'guess the elavator'....from the choice of 10 ... :) Dont listen to any miserable fart arse's writing reviews on this place. It's fantastic and we would stay there again in a second.

Definitive of Class

from bluemountainbabe
We purchased 'Touch of T.O.' packages for a group of 5 and headed for the Metropolis. We had requested The Royal York but had resigned ourself to the fact that as 'Loss Leader' purchasers our rooms would be pretty basic and we would be treated like the poor relations.

How wrong we were! from the minute we arrived we were treated like royalty.Staff were expecting at least a thousand people to check in that day and were prepared for them. The line up moved swiftly, staff travelled the line asking if they could assist , handing out water and making small talk with guests. The check in staff were pleasant and efficient and wished us a wonderful stay in T.O. and requested that we not hesitate to inform them if we needed assistance in any way. On to the rooms.....on route you get the chance to soak up the charm of a truly Great Hotel. The decor and ambiance are classic luxury and one could easily be transported back in time, to an era when only those of privilige and wealth would have graced its foyers.

Our rooms were beautiful & clean and the beds....better than at my home for sure! luxury bedding, down duvets and pillows, awesome!

As far as space is concerned, how much space do you need? we had plenty and I certainly would forfit half of the new generations of rooms at other hotels for the Luxury afforded with a stay at The Royal York.

On to the view from our room, another building but who cares? we were here to see Toronto, shop, eat at great restaurants, go to a show or two, anyway there was beauty all around us in the Hotel so who wanted to look outside!

All in all, we have travelled the world from Britain to Australia and the Royal York is truly deserving of the title LUXURY HOTEL.

Give it a try, you wont regret it!

What a Wonderful Place

We stayed at the royal york for 4 nights following our marriage at Niagara Falls. We stayed on the 12th Floor - ''hotel within a hotel'' provides the most meticulous service, and unbelievable attention to detail. Indulgences extended to guests include the use of an exclusive lounge, which features complimentary deluxe continental breakfast, morning newspaper, and complimentary coffee, tea and cafe au lait through out the day, with canapes served at cocktail hour. The Concierge team is happy to arrange theater tickets, dinner reservations, limousine services and absolutely any other special touches. Fairmont Gold Rooms are furnished with beautiful and elegantly appointed traditional decor. All rooms have CD player, service-free long-distance calls, complimentary shoeshine and nightly turndown service.A definite place to stay for those wanted to be pampered.
