Good location but claustrophobic rooms

The foyer of this hotel is grand .... but the rooms are a tad disappointing.
We booked a superior double room, but were most upset with the room we were given. Id have preffered a Travel Inn any day.
The opening hours of the bar downstairs are imposible to fathom (seems quite random)
The main downside to this hotel is the lack of windows. Our room had a high up window covered with white shutters which we could not open. Zero view - zero air.
Wouldnt want to stay again.

The place was under construction during my stay, but the upgrades to bathrooms (my room had the reno'd b-room) are key. Rooms are small, but very clean and comfortable. the price was an internet deal $90/night, which is incredible for Toronto standards. I would not pay $200 for a room that size, but at $90, it seems undervalued,m and a good stay. My wife and I went to the Eagles Concert at the ACC, and the hotel is at the centre of EVERYTHING. Walking to just about any Toronto attaction. Safe neighbourhood, but the area immediately surrounding is a little dark and not well-lit.

The staff were helpful, but I had a little glitch checking-in, when the first TWO rooms they took me to were already occupied. There followed a short delay back down in the lobby, before the manager himself straightened it out, and took my bags himself to the room...that was a nice touch.

The ONE big drawback is lack of sufficient parking. There is an underground lot next door (public) for $30 per day, and the lot the hotel suggests people use is two blocks away walking, and is also fairly pricey ($15-20/day)

Trying to find an affordable hotel for a week's stay in downtown Toronto is not an easy task.

Price, proximity and cleanliness were key factors in my search for a hotel. The Strathcona met all of these criteria, not to mention it is within walking distance of my favourite restaurant - Marche's.

The room was clean and quiet - not overly spacious but all I needed was a bed and bathroom.

Thumbs up - would stay there again.

My 5-day stay at the Strathcona worked out great. It was more reasonably priced than the other hotels offered to people attending the convention I was in Toronto for, and close to the convention center. It was also near some decent, reasonably-priced restaurants (it's in the Financial District), as well as an entire complex of underground shops and restaurants that could be entered diagonally across the street. It's also close (walking distance) to other downtown attractions. The room was very tiny, but clean. I'd recommend it highly for anyone staying in Toronto.

Cheap... in every sense.

The Strath's location is excellent: right downtown, close to the subway, Theatre District, Union Station, and the Financial District. But that's about all it has to offer. A tiny room, TV hanging up by the ceiling (if you don't lie in bed to watch, you get a sore neck after 5 minutes), a hard bench(!) in lieu of a chair, and not even basic things like a glass or plastic cups. No temperature control except opening the window, and even that can only be done about six inches. Slow elevators. However, the staff are very courteous, the hotel is clean, and the lobby is nice. Pretty good rates, but could be better for what you get. When you can look out your window and see the Royal York across the street, it's a bit of a tease (all reviews of the RY are right on the nose). The Strath is OK if you're not planning to spend much time in your room.

Stayed at the Strathcona on the May long weekend, wonderful hote, staff couldn't be more accommodating. Room first night was a bit noisy (2nd floor) asked to be moved - got a room on the 8th floor. Fantastic. Ate at the restaurant most meals and the pub. Nothing fancy but excellent value for the price. Took a city tour, did the path system, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the Lake, CN Tower, Toronto Islands, Bata Shoe Museum. Also took a Tram Car ride up Spadina Avenue and along to Ontario Place. Walked a fair bit. Loved it. Would go back anytime.Say Hi to Joyce, wonderful waitress in the restaurant. Tell her the "woman who didn't plan on bringing her husband back from the falls trip says Hello."

Our group of 20 recently stayed at the Strathcona while we were on tour there. We had heard that it was rather small with no frills, which was not a problem as we only planned to sleep there. It was very neat and clean. The location could not have been any better! We were within walking distance to all the major attractions as well as Union Station, needed we go further. The price was unbelievably reasonable in comparison with other hotels in the area. The staff was very friendly and very accommodating. We give the Strathcona 5 STARS!!!!!!

For location and price it's hard to beat. The room was small, but very clean. Service at the desk was excellent. Everything was walking distance from the Hotel. The only drawback was parking , it will cost you an additional $13 a day and the lot was located 2 blocks away. If you're going to take in a Leafs game, it's a 5 minute stroll from the Hotel.

What can I say? Excellent service and standards at great value! And a great convenient central location for all of Toronto's visitor hotspots. We liked it so much we're staying there again for a second time and would recommend it to anyone!

My husband, son and I spent two weeks at the strathcona in 2002 we found it excellent all round, courteous staff, clean room and very good location. will certainly visit again and recommend to friends.

If location and price are what you are looking for than this the place for you. Rooms are very basic with very limited amenties but the price is definitely right!! I have never had a problem getting a reservation even if calling at the last minute. Hotel staff very pleasant and accomodating. Excellent downtown location. Very short walking distance to all major attractions; (Skydome, AirCanada Centre, Union Station, underground shopping plaza and Hockey Hall of Fame.) Other hotels literally less than a block away charge more than 3-4 times the price. A definite must stay for anyone on a budget or who would rather spend their Canadian Dollar on the great restauants and bars in the area!!

I have had the absolute pleasure of staying at the hotel on a number of occasions.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the convenience is bar none. Especially at the price!
If you want to stay in the heart of the city this is the place.

I was happy when I went to the Strathcona. The rooms weren't the biggest, but they were clean and had everything I need. Good movie selection. The staff was really helpful with finding somewhere to eat and entertain. Finally, and most importantly, I really liked the price compared to everything else inflated in that city. I have recommended it to all my colleagues looking for somewhere to stay in Toronto.

Top Local Tips for Toronto

How to avoid the cold. Its very cold at moment, bring lots of layers of warm clothes and use underground walkways PATH and use subway trains. Niagara falls are relitavely close and are interesting but very cold. Wrap up very warm!

Great breakfast If you want a big, hearty breakfast to set you up for the day, I can recommend 2 places - Fran's and The Senator - they're both on Victoria Street, just down from Dundas square. Both serve up traditional American/Canadian fare and lots of it! They both do great lunches as well. good food wine can b dear in toronto some places 9 dollers a glass just shop around food is very good i felt waitresses were only concerned how much tip they were getting as u have to tip everybody so they never took time to speak to you even when u r in a bar no convesatoin from bar staff
