Upon our arrival we were informed that we could not get to the area where people "used to play volley ball, croquet, etc" because of "poison ivy". This also meant that we could not get access to the river, the boats, or take our daughter or dogs down to find by the water for things to do. Upon further exploring the area I found that there were no docks in the water and only two small aluminum boats that didn't look safe enough to go more than ten feet into the river should they be used. The area by the water and to the river was not looked after and so poorly maintained in a state of disrepair that this in conjunction with the poison ivy made the notion of even trying to make even an attempt to go to the river or find things to do an almost impossible task.
My daughter who is 12 and merely was following the posted rule of wanting to go swimming was turned away by the one owner. The sign posted clearly stated that a swimmer had to be twelve or older or else accompanied by a person 16 or older (adult) in order to swim. When I showed up however the owner said nothing about any age restrictions nor did she apologize to my daughter even though she did nothing wrong. The pool chairs were in a terrible state that I would not even want to put my clean towel down on them. The water once cleaned (skimmed of leaves and some debris) was bearable and nice to cool off in, but amazingly stayed according to the thermometer 85 degrees and never once changed. Even with the claims of having a pool heater, how does a thermometer not change even when removed from the pool?
We had hoped for a chance to spend some time around the fire pits, but the only fire pit that we say that was even remotely accessible was a small fireplace type thing beside the deck. It was never used and we could not find any firewood that was dry or available. So much for having nightly community type gatherings around the fire pit, signing songs, roasting marshmallows, etc. The barbecue worked but was small, and needed a lighter to start as the igniter did not work. Could not sit on the deck and use the table and chairs as they were disgusting and the umbrella had some sort of "spores" on it.
Inside the small cabin was another story. On first sight it appeared to be clean and well kept. Closer inspection revealed screens on the windows falling off, a futon that was uncomfortable and had an odor and had to be fabreezed in order that we could sit on it, but it was still very uncomfortable. The beds were totally uncomfortable and small. We had ants, spiders, mosquitoes and other bugs and critters coming in from the windows with the almost non-existent screens, the door, and well everywhere. The door we had to slam shut as it barely closed and the lock was a joke as the door which barely able to fully engage the locking bold into the door jamb, could be fully seen from the outside and one good pull would have ripped the door off its hinges. Then again it was a door unlike the curtains going into the bedroom area or should I more appropriately say closet like boxes. The bathroom was small and held together with some nails, caulking, and matching white duct tape. The shower had a skylight? Perhaps they ran out of building material and just put a window on top of it and slapped some caulking on it and called it good. The microwave did not work and when told about it the owner told me that her husband would be over to fix it in a few minutes. He never showed up.
There were no fans, or air-conditioning so the humidity was stifling. In town it was at least ten degrees cooler. However we did not come up to Southampton to go to town every day. Nor did we show up to stay in a small sweat box with nothing to do except watch T.V. and stare at four walls because the facilities were in such poor condition or un-accessible we would be stuck inside. The worst part of it is the fact our two dogs and our daughter ended up getting sick from what we suspect was exposure to the mold and other fungi in the cabin. Once we left their breathing problems and headache improved and after they had been home in air-conditioning and had something to eat they started to begin to perk up and breathe better. Speaking of dogs our were well behaved, but in one of the neighboring cottages there were two small schnauzers who were left alone all day and they constantly barked day and night. Nothing was said or done about the noise and commotion that the two yappy fur balls were making to disrupt everyone else's quiet time.
