Historical Traveller Reviews of Lord Elgin Hotel

very nice hotel

from dadapa
My husband, son, and I just returned from a four-night stay at the Lord Elgin. We found the accommodations to be very nice. Our sixth-floor room was attractively decorated and spacious, with a lovely view of the park. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom had plenty of counter space on either side of the sink -- always a plus. We even got what we considered a good deal ($89 American per night through Expedia). We had room service twice and found it quite prompt. The hotel's location is perfect for shopping, site-seeing, and skating on the Rideau Canal (Sadly, we didn't get to do so because the weather hadn't been cold enough for a solid freeze yet.) Buses run from nearby Rideau Street, and we were able to get to the Corel Centre for a hockey game for just $2.50 American each -- maybe not as convenient, but MUCH cheaper than an approximate $45 American cab ride! If we were going back to Ottawa, we would definitely stay at the Lord Elgin again.

Two things worth knowing:

1. When we arrived, we took an airport shuttle to the hotel ($8 per person), but one of the hotel staff told us that a cab would have been far cheaper and that we should opt for a taxi rather than a shuttle when we departed. We took his advice, but discovered that the cab ride was $28.50, so we would have done better to stick with the shuttle after all.

2. The in-house Starbucks was only open from 9:00 to 5:00 each day.

great place

Just back from Canada trip and spent just one night in Ottawa. The Lord Elgin has a great location, close to everything you should see. The best thing about this place was the excellent reception we got when we arrived. Christopher (one of 3 guys on reception) was incredibly helpful - we stay in lots of places, a complete variety from top end to bottom and he stands out as giving one of the best receptions we've ever had - he got us a great room at the front (do try and get one on the front), gave us tips of what to see, where to eat etc etc and he combined those essential but unusual qualities of efficiency, humour and politeness to perfection. The room itself was fine and good value at $169 Canadian and the bed was perfectly good. We didnt eat or use the pool though. Valet parking seemed cheap too. overall it was a fine hotel and I'd definately recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful room!

I spent a night at the Lord Elgin with a tour group and we all agreed: our rooms were gorgeous! Wish I could have stayed longer just to appreciate it. I had to go around the corner to a cooperating hotel to use their laundry facilities. Couldn't find a good, reasonably-priced restaurant in the area, but the By Market (which is probably where most tourists will eat) was closed and I could only get around on foot. Hotel restaurant seemed quite pricey and limited in its menu. People on my tour complained the next morning that they'd shelled out $40.00 for breakfast. There's a Starbucks in the corner of the hotel, but by 7 AM they still weren't open (!), so I again sojourned around the corner to Tim Horton's, where I got a scrumptious if highly-carbed breakfast for $4. Hotel service seemed to be high-class, but since I was with a tour we mostly bypassed it.

Quick and clean

Exceptionally fine room and top drawer service for a reasonable price ...

This hotel has recently been renovated and I had the pleasure of one of their renovated roms for one night.

Domage ... more would have been my preference.

'Superlative' describes everything about my experience with this place - the helpfulness of the staff - the information available - the attention to detail (slippers and a robe and a turn down - with a chocolate on the pillow - in the evening) - the furnishings and appointments and especially, that bed! It took me twenty minutes to get across to the other side to drop my feet to the floor!

Je suis impressed - as we say in The West.

The best of Ottawa

I have been at this hotel before with my sister about 20 years ago and I decided to take my son there for a get-a-way so he could see Capital Hill and this place is within walking distance. When we made our reservation Amanda was awnsome and awnser all our questions. When we arivved the Valet parking and bellmen were very helpful. Check-In was very fast and efficent. I left my Credit Card and the Front Desk guy brought it to us right away. We had one of there newer room and WOW. It was perfect. You couldn't ask for a cleaner room, excellent bathroom and beds to die for. The rooms where so clean you could eat off the floor. All the staff are amazing. Royalty is a given when you stay at the Lord Elgin.

Noisy, noisy, noisy

This is a nice looking hotel, the staff are excellent and the parking is via valet ($16.10/night). The rooms are in excellent shape, recently remodelled. Very close to parliament. Had a terrible night sleep here, was on the third floor at the back of the hotel with the air conditioning from the adjacent building going on and off all night. We found the plumbing and closing of doors to be particularly loud as well.

Good Location, very grand, big dark rooms

from Antonia
Good Location in central Ottawa, within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Staff were very nice and breakfast was good.
The rooms although large were quite dark but comfortable nonetheless.
The pool in the basement is akin to most city centre hotels and on the small side but clean and functional nonetheless.
The river cruise is good as is a restaurant at the back of the market area called Asian Fusion -definitely one to recommend.

uncomfortable beds

from A TripAdvisor Member
nice hotel but the beds are extremely firm so unless you like matresses as soft as a board, not recomended. Couldnt wait to get back home to my nice soft bed. The rooms were spacious and clean, view was great overlooking the street and watched changing of the guard going to parliament each morning.

thank you lord e

the building was clean, big and manageable. its a big, once grand now respectable hotel. what made our extended stay here exceptional was the staff. was stranded for 2 weeks with 2 yr old who couldn't fly and had a temp of 41 deg and they were so helpful my eyes well just thinking of it. its just a solid, dependable, well organised place - and comparitively good value for money. the location is excellent for just about everything.

t That Great

The Lord Elgin is very average.
I stayed there during the Ottawa Marathon. At 6:00 in the morning I was woken up to the sound of a person's voice singing O Canada. This was actually pleasurable because all the other mornings I was woken up by the sounds of doors closing. The walls seem like they are 2 cm thick. I could hear everything.
Aside from that the rooms smell of mildew and the rooms are incedibly dusty. Some people say the hotel is close to the Byward market, This is true but you have to cross many busy intersections to get to it.

If you are choosing a hotel I wouldn't recommend The Lord Elgin. Stay at the Westin or the Minto Plaza they are much better.

Top Local Tips for Ottawa

Watch the Guard marching by the hotel The "new" and "old" Guard passes along the hotel at about 9:30 AM and again at 11:00 AM Sit outside at the Starbucks and the Hotel seating area.

Walking is the best way to get around We parked our car when we arrived and walked everywhere

better prices If staying at this hotel, think of walking south on Elgin (less touristy) instead of north into byward market anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes and you will find fabulously priced restaurants with great food.
