Historical Traveller Reviews of Hockley Valley Resort Hotel

Genuienly Surprised

from Judy1948
I am writing this as I had stayed at this resort last year in July for a wedding and it was the worst experience we have had in a hotel ever. For Christmas we were given a gift certificate for the resort and were not looking forward to staying there, however we booked for an overnight stay in June and I have to tell you, this time around it was a great experience. We requested and got a refurbished room and it was beautiful. From the front desk to the restaurants and patio the employees were great. My husband golfed (good rates and the greens were great)and I went to the spa.(Not bad but pricey)
The inside pool is fine however the hot tub needs some work. The should think about putting a Hot Tub outside as well. The food in the dining room forr dinner was excellent. Breakfast was good not great but good and satisfying. Yes it is all was a bit pricey however when the the service and food are that good it is well worth it.
I'm sure by the time the work is finished it will be the resort it should be!

Not really worth it

from Beermonger
We attended for a wedding and stayed overnight. Check-in is not until 4Pm which is a little late for those leaving early and trying to escape the traffic coming out of Toronto.

If I'm paying $200 + for a room I don't expect to sit on furniture that I wouldn't have in my basement. The furniture was dated to say the least. The balcony door wouldn't lock. There was a stench of (smelled like) burnt fried food in the room. The door to our room would rattle and shake whenever someone on our floor came or went from their own room. Noisy. Kids running the halls banging on doors at 4 Am.

However, the beds were very comfortable.

Also, the wedding meal {prime rib) was excellent and the wait staff very attentive.

Disappointing Stay

from daylite21
We were guests at a wedding last wknd & we stayed at the beautiful resort. This is our 2nd visit. We were at Hockley in the summer of 2006, sometime in July for another wedding. Both weddings attended were absolutely breath taking. The ambiance, service, food and people were excellent. The Spa as usual was amazing. The staff at the Spa were helpful and pleasant. Unfortunately, we are very disappointed with our room. The room was beautifully renovated, new floors, new tub, new furniture, but the bed was poorly made. It appeared like someone simply threw the sheets on and walked away. It looked like the linen was not changed. Linen was very wrinkled, and it looked soiled. The white duvet cover looked grey & dirty, as though it has not been changed for weeks. We called housekeeping, left a message, but, no one responded. We tried to open the pull out couch, and there were chips at the side of the couch, with beer caps along the side. This room was not inspected properly, and we were afraid to sleep on the bed. We were here last summer, the room we stayed in was not renovated, however it was incredibly clean. It is nice to have newly renovated rooms, but with housekeeping getting away with this type of cleaning, we will never stay again. The entire cleanliness of the resort needs improvement.

Rooms Need Improvement

We were recommended by friends to spend a weekend at HVR. We did, we checked in on Friday March 23rd. The resort is beautiful. We enjoyed the indoor pool with our grandchildren. The hot tub was not functioning properly. On Saturday, we had lunch at the Ski Cafe. We ordered hamburgers and french fries. We were very disappointed with the food and the service. Our french fries were awful. The hamburgers were cold. We sent it back. The staff were very inattentive and rude. The cafe was not busy. We waited for quite sometime before we were noticed. These staff need training and need to pay special attention to guests.

On Sunday, we had breakfast. It was excellent. The dining room was beautiful, the food was great, the service was excellent. On the whole the staff was friendly. The Front Desk staff was polite, courteous and professional.

The other part in our stay that we find it least enjoyable was the cleanliness in our room. A notice pasted on the sliding door stipulates that there is no smoking in the room, and an ashtray is provided out in the balcony. However, there is no ashtray, but, a dirty Tim Horton Coffee cup with loads of cigarette butts. WOW, the rim was not turned over, guess what, we won a free cup of coffee. There was an old used bath towel and face cloth hanging at the back of the bathroom door. What made it worse were the clean towels hanging on the rack. They look grey. The tub was coated with a film of residue. We did not use the tub for a bath. We took a shower instead. There were crap under the beds. The white sheers over the beds were awful. We could not watch TV. Why is the TV so small? When we first entered the room the 2 light bulbs were not working. Should not a room be inspected thoroughly before a guest checks in?
On the whole it was a peaceful, restful and relaxing stay. We will come back if you decorate your rooms with bigger TV screens and improve in the cleanliness.

Loved The Ski Not The Night

from Par4ah
Ok So we were staying on the newly redone floor of the hotel... 5 I think. The room had brand new hardwood and was very nice and new looking. The new washroom was very nice except that the bathroom doors are semi see through.... Allthough our room was completely done the rest of teh rooms were still getting renovated so it was a bit dusty. Also one night the room next to us was beeing used for a party so I didnt get a good nights sleep for the next day of skiing >:(

The ski is very nice with runs extending from TeddyBear all the way to the death defying Nose Dive... I would recommend getting a leson for the people who havent visted before so that they can help ease you into the different Trails.

Also we stayed on a Breakfast/ Dinner Package and the food was very good allthough I began to laugh when asked if I wanted to eat Ostrage for dinner.

Overall It was A Good Stay !

Could have been a lot nicer overall

from Elle79
I was part of a wedding for a weekend and stayed there for convenience. The building is a nice area however extremely disappointed in the room. The rooms are extremely small, upkeep was dreadful, this place needs an entire uplift. For the good money we paid to stay there - it was not worth it, extremely overpriced for what you get! I would NEVER suggest this place to anyone nor would I stay here again. The clock in our room did not work, when we brought it to the attention of the front desk staff I got looked at like I had 12 heads on my shoulders and was told all he could do to accomodate me was give me a wake up call. It would have been nice to have known what time it was and is completely irresponsible of housekeeping staff not to keep up with things functioning properly in the room. I dont know how they get away with charging so much to stay at such a low class resort - you've got some major renovations to do if you want this place to survive!

Very Disappointed

from Kdoyle
I was extremly disappointed with the service and the quality of this hotel. I attended a wedding at the resort and along with many other guests in our Party decided to stay over the night for convenience, a very Pricey convenience none the less. The rooms were old and in desperate need of a face lift, and apparently I had one of the "nicest" rooms. The service at the wedding was not great to say the least, our server was rude and so was the bar tender. There was a large group of us that stayed and decided to treat ourselves to golf and spa. The spa was the only good thing about the resort. The treatments & the esthiticians are wonderful...but really they should be for the price. There wasn't a treatment we had that was under $100 each treatment. There was a promotion listed on their website for 25% your second treatment for July. All of us ladies had at least 2 treatments if not 3. The manager of the Spa told us she could not give us the deal- or any deal- as this was only for new bookings and we had booked ours previous to this promotion being listed on the web. Same thing happened at Golf, My father had a 2 for 1 coupon - their tee off time was for 10:40am and the coupon said from 11:00am on. They wouldn't allow him to tee off at 11am nor would they allow him to use his coupon. Hockley Valley showed absolutely NO FLEXIBILITY, and considering the amount of money that was being spent with the very large group of people we had there, that is a shame because it left a very sour taste in mine, and all the other guests, mouths. I know that none of us will be returning to this resort. Upon checkout we all came to realize that we were all charged different rates for our rooms -we were charged diff rates then we were quoted and even those with the same room & who booked at the same time paid diff prices.
Not impressed at all, their attitudes were very much that they didn't need our business (when in fact they do, as the resort looks like it is going down hill)... so we will take our business to another Ontario resort. aMyself along with many of the others in our Party are regular clients of many Ontario Resorts --this one is definitely not worth the money.

beware of extra charges.

Tried to book a room with Yuk Yuks show & dinner,as was quoted in there web site, very special rate of $99.45 per person plus tax & gratuities. After speaking with 3 different people. I was given 3 different prices. None of with reflected there very special rate. Beware of faults adds they post on there web site. Prices not as stated. We, along with other friends that wished to book the package. After reviewing the large increase in price, decided not to attend. Buyer be ware..

Good - I would recommend

from KR2008
We stayed one night as we were attending a friend's wedding in the resort. Room was ok, and breakfast had a very good selection.

Has a good outdoor pool area.

Very nice hotel

from NiagaraFallsGirl
My husband and I spent one night at Hockley Valley and we were happy with the stay. It was the time where they are going from Ski season to Golf season so it was very quite in the resort, but it is a beautiful place to go. The room was a little small, but no other problems. Buffet breakfast was great in the morning. Nice selection. We are going to go back for sure.
