Top Local Tips for St. Johns
Loved St John's We had a great time touring around St Johns and found the people to be really nice. Incredible scenery and lots of good restaurants. I would recommend going in late June, early July as we missed the icebergs and whales. We did see a few puffins, which are really cute. Still worhwhile going in September but if you want it all, go earlier.
Plenty to learn, see and do in St. Johns - car essential Did you know the Germans pumped a few torpedoes into St. Johns Harbor during WWII? Or that Marconi received the first transatlantic signal on Signal Hill (get it "Signal" Hill - do we have to spell it out?). This city on this rock has a lot of stories and you should learn some of them. So stop drinking on George Street and get yourself over to Cape Spear - THE end of the earth, Signal Hill, the Johnson Geo Centre, Quidi Vidi. You will enjoy. You need a car.
What to See, Where to Eat Do see The Rooms (the Art Gallery), especially on a rainy day. It was terrific. Signal Hill has a military re-enactment at 11 a.m. each weekday. Do take the drive to Cape Spear (about half an hour away) and do take any tourist boat in Bay Bulls to Witless Bay to see puffins and whales. All worth it! On weeknights one of the best kept secrets in summer is Shakespeare by the Sea (actually its now in Bowring Park), a 6 p.m. performance that was absolutely excellent. There's a Saturday farmers market that's fun for meeting locals; its not consistently in one place so ask at the tourist bureau. For eating: For breakfast or lunch: the vegetarian restaurant Sprouts on Duckworth; Tangled Up in Blue on a side street hill near Water Street, Stella's Hungry Heart on Military Rd. For dinner: Aqua and Bianca on Water Street, Restaurant 21 on Queens Road.
