We called 10 minutes before arrival. The front desk person said: "The hotel is 5 minutes from downtown. The room will cost you $109CA." Once we arrived and asked the same question again (how far to downtown), the answer was 15-20 minutes - not a big deal though. When we were checking out, the price suddenly became $129. The front desk clerk said: "The rates must have changed" (in 12 hours!!). But he was nice enough to still charge us $109 when we expressed our disappointment.
While we were checking in (about 5-10 minutes), I became a witness of two conversations. One - between the front desk and some person on the phone. The person on the phone found out that the room he reserved months ago is not ocean view as he was told. The clerk told him, she didn't have any idea who could have told him and she was very sorry he had been misinformed, however, they could not give him a harbor view room - they were all booked.
Then a person came to the desk and said that he had been told that the room he booked would have wheelchair access. Well, it didn;t, so he ended up paying $200 more for the room that is accessible. The answer of the clerk was again: "Sorry, you've got misinformed. I don't know who could have told you that. No, the manager is not available at the moment and I cannot help you with this situation."
Otherwise, it was a pleasant hotel.

Terrible.

There were no elevators and the room was horrible. Even though it was a non-smoking room, the old carpets and drapes had cigarette burns/holes in them. The room had bad decor and smelled moldy. The bathroom had old flooring, soap scum on the shower walls, and a hole in the shower wall.
The only good things about this place are it's location and the hotel restaurant, which serves good food.

Not worth the view

I booked a room at the Battery Hotel on a recent trip to St John's. I was in St John's at the time I booked so I had a sense of what the hotel was like. It lived up to my low expectations.
I arrived at the hotel around 5:00 pm and was told at check in that the room was not yet made up. It was another 45 minutes before the room was ready.
The corridor on the 5th floor was covered in stained carpet and it smelt of age and cigarette smoke (note - this is a non smoking floor). The room was very large, furnished in rundown old furniture and again covered mostly in stained carpeting. The room was very stale smelling and a strong odour of cigarette smoke wafted from the vent in the bathroom. This room did not have one of the famous views to at least compensate for the the third rate stated of the room.
I would not recommend this hotel.

Amazing Hotel
from mallaubra
My wife and I spent a few days in St.John's, and as we were going to see Signal Hill we past this hotel. We decided to check it out. The atmosphere there was out outstanding. We have been to quite a few hotels but this one really takes the cake. The view was out of this world, it is almost indescribable. It was just AMAZING. We loved the people, they were very courteous and informative. The rooms were also very nice, very clean and fresh.
But we would go back for the view alone. The front desk were extremely nice and gave us a couple of options for rooms, of course we took the room with a view. Great hotel, going back next year can't wait to stay at the Battery Hotel!!

what happened
from hardette
what happened to the place. It was being renovated but how did it get into such disaray. The frontdesk clerk said oh you have one of the renovated rooms, my wife and I felt fortunate. After getting off of the elevator we noticed food plates still in the hallway from the night before. the stench of beer and other odors gave way to the thought of a renovazted room. When we opened the door by way of a key, true to form the floor and rug looked renovated. but the furniture was still the old stuff with the arms of the chairs sadly worn out and dirty. the walls had been painted but only covered the damaged walls with paint not hiding the damages. The bathroom was shabby to say the least with worn out tiles etc. mirrors were not clean and hair was hanging on the lamp shades. The harbour view was really great if a person could see through the windows. the smell in the room which was non smoking was hard to describe but rancid might do. Maybe the room still needed to be renovated and I hope the rest of the place is upgrated but this traveller would never stay in the place again at the bargain price of 109.00 plus 14%tax. one night was all we could handle though booked for three. The rest of our first trip to newfoundland was a blast, what great people and country.
The view was amazing

My fiance and I stayed there for a night for a mini vacation/getaway. We called the night before and the friendly agent answered our questions, like the difference between "city view" and "Harbour View" like Harbour view is of the harbour and maybe a bit of the city, the city view might be of the East End of St Johns...or the parking lot. We picked harbour view, and boy was the view great! Our room was the cape spear suite and had 3 huge windows, the first was looking out to cape spear, the middle one of the harbour and downtown St John's and the last of the area by the confederation building....it was just like parking up on Signal Hill at night!
The building is quite old and run down though, with little narrow halls not unlike halls in the bottom of a ship, old worn carpets, and the pool was large but old, but closed down as of Sept 4th, a week after my stay. It has alot of potential, but needs major renovating. The hotel plans to tear down the old hotel and build a new one on the site in 2007, or so some of the staff told me
The room was a sort of twisting corner room, the bed was a bit of a disappointment as it was a fold up bed. The bathrooms looked dirty but on further inspection it was simply really old. The tv was quite small but we didn't mind too much.
The afternoon check in staff were sort of rude and made me feel uncomfortable, but the evening and morning staff were quite friendly and accomodating. There was no AC, but fortunately it wasn't hot when we stayed.
I must say though, I enjoyed it for it's view. Our room was by the restaurant, so we had the same view they did. The view of the sleepy Downtown St John's in the quiet of 5 am was worth it!

Disappointing
from Dr.B
We reserved a block of rooms for our guests as well as a jacuzzi suite for our wedding night. None of the rooms were ready at the designated check in time causing much confusion and delay for our guests. When we checked in to the hotel after the wedding our suite was ridiculous - the jacuzzi hadn't been cleaned and the room was poorly made up. We called the front desk to complain and they offered to send someone up - they never arrived. We complained to the hotel on checkout and were not offered so much as an apology. We followed up with the manager after we returned from our honeymoon and found them to be quite rude. They offered us a refund - it took 6 weeks to have it credited to my VISA and they refunded less than half the amount. My advice - St. John's is full of great places to stay with exceptional service - don't waste your time or money on the battery - the view only counts for so much.
battery Dining Room View
from Verily
I didn't stay at the Battery Hotel but ate in their dining room. I have been telling other touristd since then to do the traditional walk around Signal Hill and follow it up with diner at the Battery. The view is spectacular! We went at about 2:00PM so we managed to beat the dinner time rush. We had one problem with one of our four meals, but the manager looked after us [ free dinner for two!]
The other three meals were excellent. I'm from newfoundland [originally Gander] and have always felt this hotel is one of those, excuse the cliche, one of the undiscovered treasures of St. John's.
I'll certainly be back to the Battery Hotel soon , with my friends. I don't stay there because I generally rent a condo two months when I am home from my overseas job.

Lovely view but the low prices should have been a warning

From the online reviews (and even one in the Frommer guide) I knew that staying at The Battery would be a gamble, but I got a rate of $100 so I thought I'd give it a go -- but I wouldn't stay there again for $50! Under some circumstances it might be an OK place to stay, but we came up short. There were notices at the front desk announcing an ownership change -- which can only help, since the previous owners seemed to take no pride whatsoever in the place.
The hotel's strongest suit by far -- especially if you have a car -- is its location, offering superb views of the harbor and easy access to Signal Hill for even better views. If you don't have a car it's a managable downhill walk into downtown but you might want to spring for a cab back up to the place. The staff was very decent and solved a problem for us.
Now to the downsides: the place has been poorly maintained over the years and is seriously dingy, with very tired carpets and cheap furniture, although the bathroom was nice enough. The restaurant offers great views of town but very average, overpriced food, and the bar mixes weak drinks. The place isn't air conditioned, which much of the time is no issue in St. John's, but during our stay it was in the 80s. The windows open, but they're so small that they don't provide any ventilation -- outside the nighttime temperatures dropped to a very comfortable level but not in our room.
We asked to be moved out of the first room they have us, which they did -- the room was quite large but right outside its window a very loud fan ran continuously; the fridge contained a nearly empty bottle of vodka (and an empty on the window ledge) and the rug was littered with peanuts. There were two odd Murphy beds with no bedside lights, which would make reading at night impossible. They moved us to a much more decent room with no question.
If the new oners dump a ton of money into cleaning and renovating the place they'll have something; otherwise it's hard to recommend the Battery. On our last evening in town we splurged and dropped by the Fairmont for a sandwich -- it wasn't cheap but the contrast was astonishing: air conditioning, good food, and clean surroundings!

for $139/night i got a harbour view but one of the most squalid rooms i have ever seen. a rubber plug to replace the missing pop-up. porcelain chipped, cracked and stained. furniture cracked, chipped, 60's style from the thrift shop. walls streaked and dirty. lights shades dirty stained. club chairs treadbare, greasy and stained. brochure said windows that open. the reason is there is no air conditioning but you can not open the window when the wind is blowing as papers fly round the room. walked back down to reception and cancelled stay. no charge as room not used and staff not in the least surprised. got the impression they were expecting my reaction and amazed if anyone found the hotel acceptable. ok for back-packers and homeless or anyone with no standards. would not have used the bed, rather slept standing up in the centre of the room supported by guy wires so as to not have to touch anything. managed to get a room at the capital on kenmount for the same money. a two year old hotel with separate lounge and bedroom. had a view of the road but no fear of sleeping between clean sheets.
