Top Local Tips for Gander
A trip back to the 50's If nothing else, if you spend time in Newfoundland, you wil discover what it was like to live in the US during the 50's. The people here are not filled with mistrust and guarded. They are the most open and friendly people I have enjoyed for some time. Sure they are aware of the war, they were a major part of 9-11 after all. But they seem to have a happy, friendly spirit that is contageous. Do not be afraid to ask for help or advise from anyone as I do not think they know what a stranger is. And before you know it you will, like a Newfie, end all of your sentences with "my love".

About 5-7 hours from Port Aux Basques ferrry and 4 hours to St. John's. I think it's really worth doing the 10 hour drive across Newfoundland, and Gander is the best half way stop IMHO -- and I did some investigating. The other hotel opitions seem extremely undependable or even downright bad in comparison (from TA reviews and websites) -- particularly in the basic area of being assured of gettting a good night's sleep to rest up for such a long drive. I like that it's part of a chain, in this case, for the quality control and added recourse if there are problems in a remote area.
