Disappointed

Of course there aren't any horror stories here, however, at the price I paid, and compared to the price that my friends paid at neighbouring hotels, I was disappointed in a few minor things:

1. no "luxuries" like chocolate on the pillow, or bath fizzy for the tub (okay, boo hoo - but other hotels ARE doing it for the same price)

2. if you had forgotten any toiletries, you had to buy them at exorbitant prices in the lobby, whereas most higher-level hotels will put a card in the room telling you to simply ask the front desk if you forgot something

3. the remote control would only work when pointed in a specific place from a specific angle - which naturally was one causing bodily contortion

4. There was a blood stain on the edge of the bedsheet (okay - not so minor)

5. They charged $15.00 for a 15-minute phone call which was long-distance, but only from Victoria to Vancouver - hmmmm. I pay $.010 / min on my own plan - how do they justify THAT?

6. The blowdryer was in the closet and nowhere to be found in the bathroom itself

7. They wanted $5.00 for a bottle of water from the mini-bar

The good news is that the bed and pillows were fantastic for comfort.

Comfy room, good location

We booked this through priceline, but didn't' get a great deal. Probably could have saved more than the 10 dollars a night that we did. But was hoping for the empress. However, I've stayed at a Fairmont in Banff, and the Marriott probably has better rooms thant he Empress. The bed was wonderful, with 5 down pillows, 2 down comforters, and crisp sheets. It was a very tastefully appointed room, and always clean when we came back from town. The location was good too, which was a must for us as we walked onto the ferry from Washington, it only took a few minutes of walking to find the hotel. We arrived early, so wanted to check our bags, (it was only 10am) but the front desk person kindly let us check in early. We didn't even ask to be checked in, just wanted to store our bag. Then since the ferry didn't leave till 4pm, we asked if we could get a late check out-no problem there, no hassle, no extra fees...and we were able to check out at 1:30, which was great cause it was raining that day. The staff was always friendly, especially the front doorman. Overall, it was a great place to stay, and to say I was disappointed I wouldn't be staying at the Empress, but was very happy to stay at the Marriott, that's got to say something for this hotel.

Great location. Excellent rooms and facilities. However, most pleasing of all were the staff who were keen to help at all times. One of the best hotels I have stayed in during many trips to North America.

My husband and I stayed here over the Christmas holidays. We had a wonderful stay and felt very comfortable and at home here. The manager left us a Christmas card and two lovely gingerbread cookies (one man, one woman) on Christmas eve. What a nice surprise that was for a larger hotel. We thought the staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Room service came fast and anytime we needed something (like hangers) it came in a matter of minutes.

They provide free internet access, printing and photocopying in a nice little private office. This was great for me as I had to book another trip online while I was there.

We dined in the restaurant twice. We had the breakfast buffet which was great (get a custom made omlette!) and a wonderful dinner.

All in all a great stay that feels like you are in a boutique hotel.

Stayed at this Marriott in October 2004. Very nice facility. Great staff. The location is fantastic...walking distance to everything. Can't wait to go back.

Just returned from a weekend in Victoria and wanted to compliment the Marriott. The location is perfect - all the major attractions are within an easy stroll. The room is fine, very similar to their other hotels but the service is what gives them an outstanding rating. Everyone was so pleasant and knowledgeable, gave great recommendations and seemed to genuinely enjoy their positions – all of which truly enhanced our stay.
Be sure to take advantage of their dining room – dinner got rave reviews from our group of four. Two said the best clam chowder ever!

Wonderful property, excellent staff

My wife and I stayed at the Marriott while I was in Victoria on a business trip. This property came with high recommendations and we understood why during our stay. It was very conveniently located in the downtown area for my wife's daily excursions while I was working. The furnishings were very tasteful and not over stated. The staff was extremely polite, attentive and helpful when they were required, but respectful when they were not. Although we did not use the amenties much as we would have liked to; the pool and fitness centre were beautiful, clean and perfectly adequate for most people. We did not have any unpleasant or negative comments to make about this hotel in any way. We have already reccomended this property to friends and colleagues.

I highly recommend the Marriott Victoria Harbourside Hotel. It's brand new. Service is great, rooms modern and clean, and fitness center, pool and steam room is barely used, so that's something to take advantage of. Location is excellent, you're centrally located to everything. Best part, price is right, cheaper than some of the 3-star hotels in the neighborhood.

In general, I've found Canadian hotels to be overly rated in terms of "stars" compared to comparable US hotels. The Marriott Victoria is a great exception. Will always try staying there in the future..great location, nice staff, free laundry, and everything you would expect from a new hotel, including hi-speed Net.

We stayed here for our first anniversary and would recommend it to anyone!! We had a great experience, the hotel was great - and a great value, and the service was excellent! We will definitely stay here again.

Top Local Tips for Victoria

beware off site airport rentals Internet reservation for Enterprise car which I love in town,. Big mistake. Only 4 rental car companies have an airport presence, they aren't one. After looking for the desk, was told to phone for a shuttle (though reservation specified arriving flight). After call, 5 minutes, minvan pulled up . Seating for 4 with luggage... Got in, but along came 6 others from my flight, only 2 of whom could be fit in... When we arrived at the office, one desk clerk only. Then informed they close at 2pm Sundays, so car would need to be left at a hotel in Sidney, keys with desk clerk, would have to take a taxi back to airport, cost would be deducted from the billing. The car itself was great, no problems. But had to drop bags at airport, check in, take highway on to Sidney, drop car, they called for taxi,and $12 and 45 minutes later, back at the airport. Bill arrived with NO deduction for cab, and charging an extra day, still fighting that.... save yourself the agony, use airport vendor.

Give these places a miss in Victoria Don't bother making a special trip to Market Square and China Town. Both are nothing special. We walked into Market Square after it closed (but still daylight) only to see someone snorting drugs while running up some stairs. The place is rather bohemian -- if you like that sort of thing. Go to China Town only to peer down Fan Tan Alley for about 10 seconds. The gates were locked to it when we walked by. We took the perfunctory photo of the Gates of Harmonious Interest, and headed back to the Inner Harbour!
