Historical Traveller Reviews of Queen Victoria Hotel and Suite

This hotel is great.

from jdharmonjr
We just returned from a trip to B.C. and stayed one night at the Queen Victoria. I honestly don't understand why this place would get a bad review. I will say that the first room we were placed in was on the first floor and overlooked the parking lot. We simply requested a better view and were moved to a higher floor with a much better view. We loved the location and the on-site parking. No it wasn't free but it was $11 cheaper than what we payed in Vancouver. I would stay here again without a second thought.

s That?

Front desk employees (seemingly disguised/costumed as 70s era detective team) were unhelpful to the point of being rude; acted as if check-in were some form of favor. Hotel was uninviting, without welcome or cheer.

Problems with noise; hotel seems popular with teenage americans intent on whooping it up on the balconies, in the halls, etc. Management didn't seem too interested in policing the place as the problem continued throughout the night.

Great location but.....

If you're looking for a budget no frills hotel in the heart of Victoria the Queen Vic would probably be a good fit. Very basic rooms with older furnishings. Front desk was less than helpful on occasion but I think it depended on who was working as check-in went very well. Not at all happy with the 8 foot deep pool. Overall..not very kid friendly. Great location but that's about all they have going for it.

Great for Families with Children

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family, including two children ages 6 and 3 stayed in a one-bedroom suite overlooking the B.C. Museum and Victoria Harbour. We were pleasantly surprised and felt that the hotel was a good value.

Although not fancy, the suite was quite roomy and comfortable with an outdoor patio. A kitchenette adjacent to the room can be opened up for a small fee. Parking is convenient in spaces under the building. My uneducated guess is that the hotel is an early 1960's era (apartment?) building with recent renovations.

The location of the QV is unbeatable for leaving your car and touring Victoria on foot. It is quite close to the all downtown attractions and to the lovely Beacon Hill Park, where I went jogging. Our children enjoyed the small, but very nice indoor pool. We also appreciated the exercise room and spa.

The hotel's restaurant appeared nice but too upscale for small children. However, the Old Spaghetti Factory, 1 block away is possibly the most kid-friendly sit-down restaurant in existence.

We make annual road trips to Vancouver Island from Oregon, and I expect the QV will be our hotel in Victoria in the future.

Needs Work!!!

This hotel was probably quite nice...in the early 90's. Aside from the lobby, I doubt much has changed since then. Hallways have a strange odour, and the rooms are drab, and musty. For the state of this hotel, the rooms are over-priced. May be suitable for seniors who seem to favour the restaurant, but that's about it. It's a shame that management are not interested in up-dating the rooms (and the surly, un-professional staff) and if action is not taken, the place will continue to go downhill.

We spent 2 nights at the hotel on September 5th and 6th.What a bad choice we made. Our check in was a mess, we used our air miles points which was payed by aeroplan and this hotel had no idea what they were doing.
First: Check in time is 3 p.m. and the room wasn't ready. we were offerd an insincere apology.
Second: We were informed that they had only recieved payment for the second night. They claimed they could not contact aeroplan. It took me less than a minute to contact aeroplan and i had to resolve this with no assistance from the hotel staff.
Third: Our "SUITE WITH A VIEW AND A KITCHENETTE" was a room with two beds with cheap linnen and blankets with holes in them, the use of the kitchen was $10.00 a day and we had to wash our own dishes and the view was the back of the Empress Hotel. If you wend out on the balconey you could sort of see the harbour.
Fourth: Maid service consisted of them making the beds. No toilet paper was restoked.
Fifth: We were charged for local calls and 1-800 numbers.
Finally: For the prices they charge they need to spruce up the rooms and get staff that are better qualified.
Do yourself a favour and pick another hotel.

Check Room Location

We booked a room through Expedia for this hotel. We had a corner room over the parking lot and the street. It was on the second floor and faced the afternoon sun. This is a warm month and the hotel does not have airconditioning. You do not want to be in this back corner because you have to leave the window open for air. This hotel is bounded by two streets, front and back. The firetrucks come right through this room during the night!! Clerk explained that Expedia gets these rooms!!
Staff apologetic, and hotel food is good. Room appointments were lovely and location is excellent.

Would definitely stay again

Our room at the QV was clean and spacious and a good value. The staff was efficient and very friendly and the food at the restaurant was good - though a bit pricey. The location was excellent with everything we needed within walking distance. The bus to Buchart gardens is only a couple blocks away and there's a great museum next door to the hotel. Regarding the responsiveness of the staff: I left a note in the morning for the room staff that a closet door was inoperable. When we returned in the afternoon it was repaired.

Perfect Stay

I recently stayed at this hotel, despite some of the negative comments I've found on this website. I am happy to say that my experience was wonderful. Some of the comments you see here are incredibly outdated, as the hotel has obviously undergone some serious renovations in recent years. There is a large pool and jacuzzi found downstairs, along with a fully equipped exersize room. These facilities were clean, and very well maintained. Our room was more spacious than almost any I have stayed in. The optional kitchenettes were very much worth my $10/day. It saved a huge expense on food. The free internet was also a huge advantage. I have never stayed somewhere where this was not an additional charge. It is true that there is no air conditioning, but being located so close to the Harbour I found that I wouldn't have used it anyways. I won't speak of location, as everyone seems to agree that it's just about perfect. Incredibly friendly staff, who helped me to plan my day as to what i should see and how much it might cost.
Wonderful experience. I very highly recommend staying at this hotel. It was worth more than what I paid and will be staying again.

Great Hotel

We recenly stayed at the Queen Victoira Hotel & Suites, and would highly reccommend this hotel for you visit to Victoria. Not only do they have everything you need, balconies, views, very large rooms, a great pool and jacuzzi they have the BEST location in town, As a visitor from out of town you don't have to get in you car for anything except Butchart Gardens. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Top Local Tips for Victoria

Travel to Victoria Best tip I can give is, if you don't really need a car, travel from mainland on the Pacific Coach Line bus. It's always first on/off the ferry, and the bus depot is in the centre of town so far as attractions and major hotels are located. Once in Victoria you can if need be rent a car.

BC Museum If going to the museum to see a special attraction, e.g. Titanic exhibit and IMAX, get tickets the day before to avoid lineups, evening (6:30 - 7:00) seemed the best time.

The Old Spaghetti Factory It's right across the street and we had a pretty good meal there, good for families.
