from Dr. PubThe room was very nice. Large soaking tub, large shower. Nice furnishings.
Hotel staff were all very nice and added a personal touch. This is more like a small European hotel in that regard.
There is a restaurant (Hugo's Grill) attached, but we did not eat there. I did enjoy a pint of Hefeweizen at the attached brewpub.
I paid $299 a night for my room on the Diamond floor (6th and 7th). There is a complimentary continental breakfast each morning, and free wireless internet access for those who bring their laptops.
Hope this helps.

Great location, clean rooms, spotty service.
from nswontheroadValet parking is $15/day. A free continental breakfast is provided in the attached Hugo's Grill from 7 am to 10 am.
PROS: Perfect location, clean rooms, Aveda products.
CONS: Spotty service (seemingly minimal (and therefore harried) on-duty staff). Hugo's (the restaurant) is showing some wear.
We stayed in a 3rd floor room, and I was concerned that we'd hear the nightclub noise that others have mentioned.. We were there on a Sunday and a Monday night, and the place was very quiet - would this be different on a Friday / Sat night? Not sure.
The continental breakfast was barely adequate in quality, and Hugo's is definitely showing wear (dirty carpets, nicked up furniture, etc.).
Staff seemed harried in a way that you rarely see in hotels in this price range. Also, whispered conversation in our presence between two staff members at check-in over confusion about which room to put us in was not confidence-inspiring or a model of service. We ended up pleased with our room, but those uncertainty-causing convos should not happen, and do not happen in tighter-run places.
Despite a couple of hiccups, overall I would recommend the Magnolia for other tourists looking to be smack in the middle of downtown for a couple of nights. Ultimately location and room quality/cleanliness trumped spotty service for us.

from A TripAdvisor MemberGreat experience
from A TripAdvisor MemberRoom: We stayed in their 7th floor diamond corner room ($200 Canadian?). I thought the room was very clean, cozy and romantic with a large queen-sized bed and sofa as well as a gas fireplace. The sofa was facing away from the view, but when a hotel worker showed us the room he said a lot of people turn the sofa around to face the windows; so we did and really enjoyed the city lights. The double windows opened up and you could step up and lean out against the railing if you wanted to. The room had an elegant victorian feel without being overdone or too flowery.
The bathroom was small; it had a bathtub and enclosed shower, complete with aveda products.
Noise: We didn't notice any noise up there on the top floor, although that may be an issue in the lower floors because of the bar.
View: The view was recommended me by the front desk when I called from WA and asked his opinion of the best view. with a view of both the parliament building and harbor with a building between the two it probably was the best view in the hotel.
If the view is important to you then there are many other hotels around the harbor with a more open view. The laural point inn has some of the best views of the water.
Location: Great spot for walking around the city, right next door to the Empress and visitor center.
Hotel Service, friendliness: Excellent! When we first arrived in the city we wanted to see the room we'd booked (though we weren't due to stay yet), and they escorted us right up. The front desk was always friendly.
Valet Service: Wonderful. Quick and accommodating. There is a parking garage across the street, but i don't know how much less it would have been.
Hotel Restaurant: The hotel has a brewhouse/grill adjacent to the lobby. The bartenders in the grill were very friendly and when we asked what there was to do on a friday night one guy called his dad to get us free tickets to a hockey game because he worked there! The food was good too. We got a room/dinner package when we booked.
We also ordered a cheese and cracker dessert and the waitress just let us take it all up to the room.
All around great experience and I thought it was very affordable.
Great Location!
from RussVancouververy nice
from A TripAdvisor MemberNice spot, nice rooms - shame about the noise
from ZarakinMagnolia has an excellent spot right downtown and having been to Victoria four times, this hotel has one of the nicest locations for the price.
Check-in and the vallet service was excellent - though I wouldn't have needed the latter, as there is a parking building right next door. The valet service was $15CAD for one night. We had three rooms booked, two on the fifth floor and one on the third. The rooms were in excellent shape.
The biggest problem was the noise coming to the third floor room from the bar next door. E.g. I could hear the words for "Sweet Home Alabama" among the usual screams and loud music&announcements made by the DJ. Only after the bar closed closed (2am) we could get some sleep. The staff was aware of the issue and are getting complaints, but couldn't/haven't been able to do about it.
So if you stay in this hotel ask for a room high up, the rooms we had on the fifth floor were OK.
Cant imagine a better spot
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe definitely wanted to stay somewhere nice in Victoria, and considered the Empress, but were quite happy we chose the Magnolia!
It's the ideal spot in Victoria location wise, and the accomodations were perfect... beautiful room, easy access, great maid service, attentive staff...
I've stayed in many "boutique" hotels such as those in NYC and San Francisco (Paramount and the like).. and I would call this place a great combo of boutique style and hometown friendly service.
For instance, I spaced out and left my road atlas on the roof of my car. The valet noticed it and put it on the passenger seat for me and let me know. The folks at the desk really know the town. The guy who made our booking was also very easy to work with.
We felt spoiled on this one so would highly recommend!
Not sure what the fuss is about!?
from ozamThe cons
1. Room looked very worn
2. Linens were no better than a Holiday Inn and were nothing like those found in a "botique" hotel
3. Our room had a beautiful view directly into a parking garage
4. The night clubs directly next to the hotel were VERY LOUD at night
5. Parking was not included
The pros
1. The price was better than the Fairmont or the Hotel Pacific, although it was not inexpensive.
2. The room was relatively large
3. The staff was very friendly
4. Breakfast was included, although not particularly tasty!
5. Very good location
In summary.....There is nothing great about this Hotel. If the price is right then it may be worth a stay; otherwise; Victoria has many other options.
Top Local Tips for Victoria
Try the French restaurant next door The French restaurant next to the hotel (just across the street, towards Government), has a lovely ambience and great food at competitive prices.
Within walking distance Most attactions are within walking distance of downtown. The wax museum, Royal BC Museum, Miniature World, The Harbour, The Empress, Shopping, The ocean, Many wonderful restaurants. I would recommend finding accomidation downtown and walking everywere because you get more out of it. It is a beautiful city with so much to see and do.
Best time to visit I've been in July and again in April, while the tulips and daffodils are beautiful in April the weather can be iffy. I found it to be much nicer and more beautiful in July. I would like to return in June to see if it is just as nice then.
