Grand Old Time
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Grand Pacific is in a great location, newly renovated and very clean, has a very comfy bed, and best of all every room has a balcony. A little small... but parking is affordable and so is the price of the room. The main restaurant is ok. But the front desk, valets and the staff in the The Mark restaurant are all excellent. We had a great time staying two nights. You really should spend three nights – so much to see. Buchart was great... lots of fall color. October offers major savings, less crowded streets and restaurants. Ferry rides are fun, but call ahead and spend the money for the reservation... even in off season if the sun is shining you will be bumped an hour prior to sailing. The drive up north to Nanaimo is fun... antique shops, little townships and farm stands galore. The road signs in Canada are really confusing so ask the hotel for clear directions. The best thing about visiting Canada is the people - friendly, chatty and helpful!

I just stayed here from Oct 16-17, 2004. I got a Victoria Room in what I think is the older wing (east?). For the price (C$159/night) I guess we can't complain, but the room is hardly spectacular. The room is due for a renovation (small TV, very dark, lots of chipped paint on the bathroom door) and the room wasn't as large as I was expecting.
On the positive side, again the location was great (right next to the Parliament, which is right next to the BC Royal Museum, and a 3 minute walk to Government St shopping), all of the staff was very friendly, from the front counter to the bell staff, there are a LOT of amenities (swank spa, pool and gym). Had dessert and drinks at the Pacific Lounge, which has generic decor and small portions, but good quality. The room had nice toiletries and comfortable beds, but overall seemed shabby for the price. (And the view was of the back of the hotel behind us. Not that great.) Also, the phone says there's free outgoing local calls but will start charging after 20 minutes - according to the front desk, they will actually charge you after 1 hour *per call*, so you can hang up to reset the timer and dial out again with no fee.
I would recommend staying at this hotel if you're looking for good amenities and location, but not if you have high expectations on the room or view (unless you upgrade for a higher price). Ask for the west wing of the hotel with a high floor (we asked for a high floor but were given 2nd floor).

High point!

We spent only two nights here in September, but it was the nicest stop on our 2-wk trip to the Northwest. Starting with the welcome from a top-hatted valet, then the friendly front desk staff, and including the bellhop and the girls from room service, everyone at the hotel is extremely helpful and pleasant. The location is perfect, the view of the harbour and the Empress excellent, and it was an easy walk anywhere in the tourist quarter. Well worth the price of the room, we loved it.
Where is the window.
from MarkCC
The Hotel Grand Pacific is an imposing old building in an excellent location. And our waterfront room did have a small balcony facing the inner harbor and the Empress Hotel.
Unfortunately, although there was a glass door to the balcony, it was in a corner of the room, and there was no window. The room always seemed dark. From the outside, it appears that most rooms are similar.
Also, the mattress seemed to be due for replacement.

Nice, but not worth five stars
from travelfamily3
I was expecting a true five-star hotel, and was disappointed. The staff, from the bellboy to the front desk to housekeeping, was excellent and definitely five-star. However, the quality of the rooms was maybe a three-plus. Let's face it, the decor is dated and boring standard fare. The carpets and furniture are a bit tired and could use replacing. The bed was uncomfortably hard (and I love a firm mattress). Maybe that is a ploy so the guests will get massages at the spa, which was wonderful. My husband and I both had massages by Shari, a fabulous massage therapist. Sure, some amenities were nice (robes, the bath products, the granite countertop), but overall it did not deserve five stars. The pool is great however.
Great place to stay
from A TripAdvisor Member
We really enjoyed our two night stay at the Grand Pacific. It's in a very convenient location, yet not overrun with tourist crowds like the Fairmount Empress. We booked our stay online through hotel.com and were upgraded to a mountain view room at no extra charge. The rooms are spacious, and many have balconies with great views. The staff was courteous and friendly and the fitness center was very nice.
great stay at this hotel
from tamio
Had a terrific stay here and was definately happy with my choice. The rooms were very nice and the staff was very helpful. There is a full health club with full pool along with a kiddie pool and spa/sauna/steam room. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast there in the mornings. Parking was free if you self park. The location is excellent. I will definately stay again.
Location, Location, Location

This place is ideally located. Pricey? yes, but it was worth the splurge for 3 nights in early August. Staff was incredible and our bellman could have worked for the Victoria Tourist Ministry. Our room was very quiet. The bed was as comfortable as we've ever had and the fold out bed for our kids was very comfortable as well. The maid service was top shelf. The cafe on the lower level does a great job with espresso and latte's. We'll go back to the GP.
Nice hotel, but not worth the price
from ILoveTravel
This is a nice hotel with outstanding cutomer service, but for the price, we expected "extras." We can pay half-price and have a very similar hotel experience in Victoria. If you are looking for a splurge, head to the Empress. If you like the location of the Grand, check out the Days Inn right next door.
Great for Adults and Infants Alike!
from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked at suite at the Grand Pacific in order to stay with our 4 month old infant. In addition to the perfect location and service described consistently on this website, our room was wonderful. Classically tasteful without being too frilly, there was a nice balcony overlooking the harbor. The hotel provided a great pack-and-play crib for our infant along with sheets and blankets. The suite (#726) was perfectly laid out such that she could have her own nook, and we didn't bother her nor did she bother us. We all were well-rested (rare for a vacation with a 4-month old). Room service was tasty (we got sandwiches with great fries and a terrific salad), and the gym was great - full service with an incredible lap pool. Finally, the conceirge was amazingly helpful, saving us $30 on High Tea at the Empress and steering us towards great Sushi at Ebizo. My parents also stayed at the hotel, and for the same price, their suite was not nearly as nice (decor less tasteful and view of local motel only). So in keeping with other comments, might pay to scope out your room before finalizing your stay!
Top Local Tips for Victoria
Harbor view If you want a harbor view, request a higher suite at the ends of the wings (perferrably on the wing facing the harbor).
Check out Bartholomew's For excellent local ambience and decent "pub grub" (and fresh oysters), check out Bartholomew's on Douglass Street behind the Fairmont Empress. Nice people, good food, reasonable prices, open late.
Dining Check out Trip Advisor Forums for locals favorite restaurants.
