This hotel is in a pretty seedy part of town. Rooms are small, but clean. The front desk staff were nice, but not very knowledgeable. Ok for the price, but you get what you pay for. Typical "Best Western" average hotel room.

Nice room, great service

From the time I arrived, to the time I left, the service I got from the staff was excellent. The valet parking (extra cost) was dependable, and cars were retrieved in a shorter amount of time than promised.

I stayed in a unit with a kitchenette, and two beds. The room was nice, clean and well maintained. The only problem was that the coffee maker had the wrong carafe, so it would not let the coffee drip through. When I called the front desk, they immediately sent somebody to my room with a brand new coffee maker, still in its box. The hotel gave me two vouchers for any beverage at the specialty coffee shop across the street to make up for the inconvenience.

The unit was a bit on the small side, and did not have as much room for luggage as I needed to be comfortable. I had reserved through a third party site, and it stated that there would be a separate bedroom. I did not complain, since I initially thought the room would be just fine, since it had the sleep space I needed. I can't tell if the hotel made a mistake, the booking website had wrong information, or whether they would have rectified things had I brought it up, so I have no reason to think it's their fault. But to be on the safe side, I would suggest calling to confirm your room type.

The kitchen area was small, but well equipped, and stocked with free bottled water, replenished as needed.

The fitness center was better equipped than you can tell from the photos on line, which is the opposite of what I've experienced when going by pictures in general.

WiFi was free and reliable. All amenities were as described or better. A/C worked well. And I did not get soaked with incidental charges upon check out.

There is no pool, but the front desk offered me free vouchers for the one at the nearby YMCA. I did not go there, though.

Last week my husband and I stayed at the Best Westen Carlton Plaza in Victoria, British Columbia. I chose this hotel because the price was very reasonable and the reviews that I read spoke very highly about it. I was very pleased with the hotel. The hotel staff was very helpful at all times. One of their staff even took our bags to the room for us. Our room was very clean, the bathroom sparkled. The hotel is extremely secure. The elevator door or the door to the stairs wouldn't open without using the room key.
The only parking around the hotel has parking meters. There are parking lots that charge $10 per day. The hotel has valet parking for $9 per day and they didn't mind how many times we came and went. Their charge was for the entire day. The parking lots around charge for each time you leave. The only bad thing about the hotel was that they did not have a complimentary breakfast. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which is open for breakfast and lunch.

I would highly recommend this hotel when traveling to Victoria.

Excellent Value/ Friendly Upbeat Staff

We travel to Victoria frequently (we live just a 90 minute ferry ride away) and over the years have stayed at most of the major hotels - Empress, Grand Pacific etc.) and many of the local bed and breakfast places. For our latest stay we decided to try to find a centrally located, clean, safe, but nice place that wouldn't blow the budget. We think we have found it in the Best Western Carlton Plaza. The room was totally refurnished and everything was spotless and appeared brand new - furniture, bedding, shower curtain, air conditioner, carpeting etc. Staff was friendly, informative and with more than one person manning the front desk area our check-in and check-out (as well as storing our luggage) went smoothly. If you are looking for a fancy lobby with acres of marble, a water view from your window (our back of the hotel window looked out over roofs and a brick wall) and fussy room service this is not the place for you. If you like a friendly staff, good value and a safe and clean hotel room this might be the right hotel. Only bad experience was the restaurant, De Dutch Panecooken (spelling?) House. While it is a clean, bright place - the staff was slow, and breakfast took a long time to be served even though the place was mainly empty. Eat elsewhere, there are lots of cafes and restaurants just blocks from the hotel. The wonderful Brasserie L'Ecole (dinner only) is a just a 5 to 10 minute stroll away.

Superb value

Great location, friendly staff and a great rate. We got upgraded to a suite which got us a little kitchenette. They also included free valet parking and free wireless internet in the rooms which was a huge bonus.

The only downside is that the rooms are super-tacky. They look like they were decorated by my 70 year old great aunt in 1988 or so. That said, the rooms were clean, and the beds comfy.

If you're looking for a good value in Victoria, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this place.

We had an absolutely great stay at this hotel while visiting the area and the Butchart Gardens. 2 couples in 2 rooms for 2 nights. The rooms have been refurbished and are very clean and well kept by the staff. Large TV, 2 queen beds with down comforters and 3 pillows each. Nice large bathroom with a terrific shower over the tub. Coffee maker and supplies, desk, and overall plenty of room. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, and told us of a restaurant only 1 1/2 blocks away (nice, due to some mobility problems for 2 of us) that was not fancy, but a good clean, friendly, and welcoming staff. Food was plentiful and very good, including cocktails. When we wanted our car, we called the desk, and by the time we got to the lobby, the car was waiting for us. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Victoria.

Excellent room, spacious with own kitchen. Clean, friendly staff, free umbrella. Great location in the centre of Victoria. Very cheap in the winter season. Highly recommended!!!

A very good Best Western hotel, in the heart of historic Victoria, British Columbia.

Stayed there in December, 2006. The rate was unbelievably cheap, which worried me at the time of booking. But I was certainly not disappointed. Nice, large room with newer beds, TV, etc. Clean room, friendly staff.

The location couldn't be better.

Decent hotel, OK value

The best thing about this hotel is its central location in downtown Victoria. There are many restaurants and bars surrounding it and the downtown sites are in easy walking distance.

The staff was competent, but was hapless when asked to provide restaurant recommendations.

Rooms are on the small side, but clean. Decor is what you'd expect from Best Western.

The main draw for us was location and the fact that they accept pets.

My room was on the 5th floor and close to the elevator. That's probably why I heard the elevator motor running whenever someone was moving up or down. It was not all that loud, just a minor annoyance. Another thing was that the heating/air conditioning unit was a bit noisy. Other than that, I liked the experience there. This hotel is quite centrally located (about 7-10 minute walk to the Inner Harbour), close to shopping, buses, etc. At night there were a number of drunks on the streets nearby, but the area felt relatively safe.

The room was very large and very clean, no stains/odours, etc. The bed was avarage, but very clean. The room had a full bath. Coffee/tea facilies were available in the room as was the free bottled water. The hotel lobby and the rooms have wired internet access available. The network runs though their electrical system, so you need to get a special modem and the network cable at the reception. Apparently, some floors (I know for sure about the the second floor) are not wired, so make sure to ask upon check-in.

The hotel staff were helpful. They switched me to a room with internet access, helped with directions, booked airport shuttle, etc. Overall, a good experience. Would definitely stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Victoria

Visiting Butchart Gardens To take advantage of the blooming season for the 100's of 1,000's of bulbs and shrubs, go in late April or very early May. Weather was very cooperative, and the gardens were at their best. Not too crowded yet before many tourists arrive, so your visit will be a relaxing and rewarding experience. We had 2 of our foursome on electric scooters and 2 walking, and we got along just fine the entire day. Food was good and you have a choice or restaurant, cafeteria, or coffee shop. Victoria has a wealth of excellent places to dine. Everything from fast food to gourmet dining is available, and the hotel staff is very helpful in giving you recommendations.

Royal B. C. Museum We visited the Titanic exhibit at the Royal B. C. Museum. While the tickets we a bit pricey, we thought the exhibit was very well organized and worth seeing. The museum itself (the permanent exhibits) is terrific and will be of interest to both adults and families with children.

A nice ferry ride from Vancouver. Ferry service is available, and runs on an hourly basis. Ferries that run on odd numbered hours (1pm etc) are larger and nicer. You should try to take one at least once. During mid week, there was no wait for a mid morning ferry, which was about 37% full. On a Sunday, at 11:30, it was too late for the noon ferry, but the 1pm ferry was no problem. Getting around Victoria was easy. I had a navigation system with me, but I had to reset it from WAIS to standard mode, or else I kept losing satellite reception. That's not something I thought of doing right away, because it's one of those things you set when the navigator is new, and never touch again.
