Historical Traveller Reviews of Sutton Place Hotel
Great Location
from sti5brigadeWe asked for a high floor room based on some of the reviews, as on the lower floors you can hear a lot of road/outside noise
On checking in found that we had indeed been given a top floor room - so they do take note of your requests which was a positive
We had chocolate covered strawberries in the room on arrival which was a nice touch.
Overall the room was ok, but rather small and even at a high levels you could here the road noise (I guess though given this is a central location then you can expect some noise - I think they need better windows though!). We were facing the main road/Cinema so we did notice the noise.
The bar area was nice, but maybe some would find it very dark. On a couple of evenings it was too busy in the bar so we went to sleep early. Drinks and food in the bar were reasonably priced. Watch out for the Nacho's/Jalapeno's - the hottest I have ever tasted! - One Nacho meal was enough for 2 people!
Pretty sure we saw Vinnie Jones in the Hotel on our last day........
We went to the gym/pool area a couple of times and this was one area that really lets the hotel down. I stay in a lot of hotels on business and the gym was a bit 'run-down' and could have done with modernising. The pool area/spa bath were ok, but again needed to be upgraded.
The hotel itself has a good location in the centre of the city and near to all the shops and restaurants. In fact having walked all around the centre for a couple of days you would be hard pushed to find a better location. We ate out all the time and I can strongly recommend the Boat House in English Bay - very good food at good prices and the bitter was excellent! We had some poor food and service at Joe Fortes - We had their fish and chips and the food was on a par with McDonalds, except of course at 10* the price and the waitress was stressed out with the whole process (All I stated was the food was not really edible - which it wasn't) and she got a bit stroppy but we did get a refund of the food cost
Make sure you have your driving license as you will certainly need to hire a car and drive up to Whistler mountain, grouse mountain/Capilano Suspension bridge and of course a drive around stanley park... unless your super fit and can walk/run around it (plan to hire a car for approx 3 days)- hotel charges for parking, but I cant remember this being expensive and pretty normal for a city centre
One point to note - we stayed in June and it rained (a lot!) so prepare yourself - at least the hotel seemed to have an extensive supply of umbrella's that they would give out (foc)
We would certainly visit Vancouver again - one of the nicest cities we've visited and definately on a par with other great places like San Fran and Cape Town.
We will be coming back to Vancouver again, probably in July 06, we'll have another look at hotel's again, but wont rule out the Sutton Place
Top value, slightly overrated
from bcsaltchuckerWe have stayed there twice, and my wife one other time. She grew up in Vancouver, and I lived there for 2 years, so we know the city pretty well. The location is nearly first rate for being right in the centre of tourist action at Robson and Burard. Trouble is, the scene is more fun and hip in Yaletown, False Creek and on the revitalized Coal Harbour. Good thing is, those areas are within a $6 cab ride, or 20 minute walk.
The main shortcoming is the view. This probably accounts for the cheap room rates. The million dollar views along Coal Harbour are worth it only on sunny days, though - not likely in winter.
This last trip had a few hiccups: missing wine glasses and coffee cups. The Gerard Lounge scene was also a little tourist-frumpy - but this picks up during non-holiday weekends.
We also liked Opus in Yaletown, but now they are charging double what we paid at Sutton! Opus is also overrated, with its sub-Ikea-quality room furnishings. It wants to be a 'W', but it's not quite there. Unlike Opus, Sutton Place meets World-Class expectations.
Simply the best!
from A TripAdvisor MemberShort story highlighting their service: we brought a bottle of wine back to the room and tried to open it with the corkscrew supplied in the mini bar (made of plastic). As you would expect, the plastic snapped trying to get the cork out. We called the front desk and within 2 minutes, not only was someone there to open our wine bottle, but they also came up with a complimentary 1/2 litre!!!
I can't wait to see the renovated appartments once they redo them, as I come to Vancouver for weeks at a time, and it would be great to have Sutton service in a home-like environment.
Very nice hotel
from ChucjA bit of a gem
from DRobThe room was lovely and the bathroom was very nice indeed.
The little extra touches were a welcome pleasure too.....the chocolates each day, the robes, and the varied choice of lotions, shampoos, and gels.
We had problems with the safe which had to be replaced, and the TV which wouldn't work, but it was great to find that the staff were courteous and professional in rectifying these problems.
We didn't use the hotel's dining facilities, preferring to explore Vancouver during the stay, but talking to other guests, they all thoroughly enjoyed their dining experience.
The room was quiet, (we stayed on the 7th floor) even with it's proximity to the downtown location.
I would not hesitate in staying at the Sutton Place again, it is now my preferred choice.
Great Place
from trinaunzGreat stay!
from cousinI can't recall a more pleasant staff in any hotel we've stayed at in recent years. Front desk, concierge, bell hop, car valet, all top notch. We loved the central location which allowed us to walk to all the sights.
Had a "great" meal at Le Gavroche. Food only surpassed by the wonderul service. We had a "good" meal at "C" restaurant. Nice setting and well prepared entrees. The whole thing seemed a bit "sterile" to me. The wine list, although extensive, was overpriced.
The only negative of the trip was the time it took to get through US customs on the border crossing back into Washington. Well over an hour with only half the inspection booths open.
Location, location, location
from lambleyLoved Sutton Place! We will be back!!!
from krosasThe first impression of the room was "fabulous!" The room was very clean, bright and furnished incredibly! We had the two twins and boy are the comfortable! The bathroom was good size and was very, very clean. We are very picky about bathrooms and this one was a five star! No stinky smell of mildew or mold, but a fresh, clean scent. The service, quality and over all appearance of the hotel was a five star rating. We will not stay anywhere else in Vancouver!
Great location too! Very close to everything!
Sutton Place Passed our Expectations
from GroupworkerTop Local Tips for Vancouver
Tojo's You must make it out to Tojo's sushi restaurant. Try the tuna special appetizer. My mouth is watering justthinking about it. I live in NYC which has great restaurants but nothing compares to their sushi.
Sushi, Sushi, Sushi!!! Eat at Asahi-ya on Robson or Kitto on Granville (both a few minutes walk from Sutton Place) Ecellent sushi and tempura at great prices. My wife and I ate for about $35, tip included.
Stanley Park Rent a bike at the corner of Denman and Georgia to ride around the park. This can take numerous hours, there are plenty of bathrooms and some restaurants located throughout the park. They also have an aquarium that costs around $20.00. Be alert to bike thefts by the aquarium. Locks are included with the rental but must be requested.

Sumptious, traditonal and elegant surroundings lose their lustre if the basic expectations of hospitality are not met.
