This is where you need to be if you want to experience convenience, value, and a pied-a-terre lifestyle in a residential neighborhood, on a lovely tree lined street. Ask for a high up one bedroom unit facing the bay. You`ll get a spacious, beautifully furnished apartment with a fully equipped kitchen, private balcony, and free self-parking. Everything here is impeccably maintained. The lovely lobby and amiable staff will only enhance your first impressions, and things will even get better from there. The property is located in the heart of gay Vancouver, but is very convenient to restaurants, shopping and nightlife for all. It is central to all that Vancouver has to offer to the business traveler or tourist alike. An exceptional value!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Sunset Inn and Suites Hotel

Great Location and very helpful staff

from rjg4321
Spent 9 nights in the Sunset Inn at the end of our cross Canada holiday. Our first impression of the room (504) was of dated decor and furnishings (eg dark green carpet and similar upholstery) but we quickly came to appreciate the large sitting room, well equipped kitchenette and the plentiful storeage space for luggage and belongings. The bedroom was quiet being on the 5th floor and overlooking the rear alley and the bathroom was perfectly adequate. We used the ground floor laundry facility to good effect on the first morning of our stay. But above all we found the location just inside a quiet side street one block from all the facilities (shops and restaurants) of Davie Street was perfect. We did not miss the hire car which we returned as soon as we got to Vancouver. The bus service in Vancouver is excellent and very good value also the Sunset Inn is within walking distance (about 3 blocks down hill) of the False Creek Ferry for Granville Island and other attractions. The staff went out of there way to be helpful and friendly and helped to make for a pleasant stay. We also found the information pack in our room was full of helpful advice for our stay in Vancouver.

Excellent Value, Location and Staff

Great value. Extremely helpful and friendly staff... they even keep oversized umbrellas just off the lobby for guests to borrow for the inevitable Vancouver rain. Without doubt, one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed, and I travel on business over 100 days per year. The suites with full kitchens enable guests to save some money, at least by heating up leftovers if you do not want to really cook. Great variety of excellent and inexpensive restaurants in the area --- check out Stephos (Greek) and Characters (Greek/Indian). I read earlier posts about the tight parking --- it is not a problem unless you are driving a vehicle that is really big --- and there is no charge for parking while most Vancouver hotels charge an extra $20 CDN per night. Our daughter and her husband moved to Vancouver three years ago and after staying in many places we have decided to make this the place we stay whenever we visit them. Some earlier posts question the neighborhood --- my wife in her 50's and our daughter in her 20's felt perfectly comfortable walking around the neighborhood alone --- maybe not after 2 AM, but who stays out that late anymore. The only negative is that, although the Sunset Inn is located on a very quiet street (for Vancouver), it has single pane windows and traffic noise is noticeable during the day, especially when the streets are wet --- on the other hand, it is as quiet as most hotel accomodations in Vancouver unless you pay top dollar for the big chains --- and the traffic noise did not bother my sleeping at all.

Not great, not bad

We stayed here for three nights as the last leg of our holiday before returning back to the UK. We had booked a delux one bedroom suite (newly renovated) on the twelve floor. 129CAD per night.

Our first impression of the hotel was not great, the hotel from the outside looked like an old, ordinary block of flats (but smaller). The reception had given us a parking pass which directed us down the back alley of the hotel, which was unsavoury and made my wife a little nervous as we had our two year old daughter with us. The car park was cramped, but to be fair was safe and gated, plus being free was a bonus.

The room was strange, newly refurbished and very clean, but looked a little dated already. The kitchen we had was excellent, with everything that you would need for a comfortable stay. The bathroom was tiny, with only a shower (which was large). This wasnt too much of a problem as our child happens to like showers, but I would imagine that there would be a problem if you had a baby!.

The bedroom didnt have a door on it, so we were unable to seperate from our daughter when sleep time came, which caused us many problems as you can imagine. Another gripe was the TV in the bedroom, which had a really bad reception, which meant we could only see about 6 channels out of 70. The main tv was fine though.

The noise levels were not too bad, except the other rooms on the very narrow corridor could be heard when people talked. The room also didnt have a safety bolt on the door, and as a consequence, my daughter manged to get out of the room twice as you unlock the door by pulling the handle down!. Gave me a few scary moments.

In summary, the hotel was in a reasonable location, which happened to be the gay village, close to relevant attractions and a good base to see the sights from. My wife didnt feel safe going out on her own, but i felt it was ok. The staff were very helpfull and answered all questions politely and informatively, and we didnt feel ripped off with the price. Would we stay there again? probably not.

Great place/great price

I drove up to Vancouver from Seattle on Mon 10/31 and got back home tonight-11/4/05. First time in the area and staff were very helpful and pleasant about where to go, what to do, and what to see. Price was very reasonable. Suite had kitchen and dining area with all amenities. If I was more motivated, I could have cooked all my own meals, but there were many resatuarants (great variety) within walking distance in safe, clean, pleasant neighborhoods. Secure parking is available at no extra cost. Laundry room is also available. Great place to stay as base for outings. Could have walked (if I had the energy) to most places, but having a car came in real handy and saved lots of money as a result. Rained most of the time I was there, but didn't mind at all. People were very friendly and the city was clean, interesting, and fun - even this late in the year.

My husband and I stayed at the Sunset Inn and Suites the 30 Oct 05 for one night. It is located on Burnaby St. in the Davie Village about 6 blocks from Robson St. and 2 blocks from the seawall promenade. We paid 129CAD for a one bedroom king suite with kitchen and since we arrived early from the Canadian train, we were not expecting to be able to check in right away. However, they upgraded us to an available deluxe king suite at no additional cost which allowed us to go to our accommodation right away.

All the staff was very friendly and helpful. The suite was very spacious and nicely decorated. The furnishings were modern and coordinated. While not quite as luxurious as the Royal York Hotel where we had just stayed, it was equally comfortable and welcoming at half the price for three times the space.

All in all, this was a most pleasant experience.

Practical and Good Value

from Kinnik
Ok - it's not plush, it's not luxurious, and some of the furniture is a bit dated. But it is well located, reasonably well-equipped, and good value for money. The room was big, with a King bed, two tables, a sofa and a kitchen area. The bathroom was small and old, but sufficient and clean. The kitchen was similarly clean and well-equipped (oven, microwave, toaster, fridge, freezer etc), though some of the furniture and equipment looked past it's prime. The big bonuses were (a) the secure parking spot (I've seen a review saying they're small, but that wasn't my experience); (b) the kitchen - which means that you don't have to wait until 7am for breakfast (great if you're still on UK time) and you don't have to rely on restuarants; and (c) the fantastically helpful and friendly staff. If you want a luxurious holiday hotel - don't stay here. But if you're looking for a well-priced and practical home away from home, look no further.

My Home Away from Home in Vancouver

from A TripAdvisor Member
I've been staying here for about five years and it is my favorite hotel anywhere... and I've stayed in some very luxurious places. The rooms are really apartments -- the older ones are just fine and the newer ones are fabulous. This hotel is QUIET. Because of its design you hear nothing from room to room, and no outside noise if the windows are closed. However, what makes it the best hotel is the staff. They are the nicest people in the world and I really feel like I'm coming home again every time I stay there.

Overpriced, not much character.

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was simple and didn't have much character - bland, generic hotel furniture, poorly sized. It was also overpriced for what it offered. I checked some other hotels out while I was in Vancover and they seemed much nicer at the same price. We stayed in the "deluxe" room instead of the standard and I would not recommend this at all. Make sure you request a room on the upper floor facing the water. Some of the rooms look out over the parking lot.

The room was clean but the maid service was minimal.

The location was fine (close to Granville Island and Bridges, easy walking to downtown) but further up on Davie toward Stanley Park is a little bit nicer.

Overall, clean but over-priced and nothing special.

Suites

The pictures shown on the internet make this hotel look so inviting but that was not the case. Our second floor room overlooked the alley which was very dirty and noisy (we were awakened in the middle of the night by people arguing). The room was clean but very shabby. One couple slept on the sofa bed. The mattress was a joke. It had holes in it and they could feel every spring. We booked through the Entertainment card and paid $175 for the night. This is ridiculous for this type of hotel and the room we were given. I feel like we were totally ripped off!

Convenient, pleasant, near Davie Village

from gefrisbo
This 50-room boutique hotel met our needs perfectly: Reasonably priced, in a quieter part of Downtown Vancouver away from the most touristy areas but easily accessible to all the interesting parts. We read about other hotels in the area being in noisy parts of town, and we walked by many of the less expensive places to find that they were frequently in seedier neighborhoods. The kitchenette and convenient laundry facilities conveyed some of the comforts of home. Sure, the furniture is generic hotel furniture. While the quality was not elegant, it was certainly passable.
The hotel is in walking distance to all of Davie Village, including restaurants and convenience shopping (pharmacy, grocers, bookstores). It's a few blocks from the sea wall, and a short trek to Robson and other more tourist-oriented parts of town.
The free wireless Internet access was a nice bonus. And the staff were uniformly helpful. The daily morning cookies and coffee are a nice idea but not as appealing as one might expect.
In the end, we were very pleased with our choice to lodge here.

GST refund Be sure to keep your ferry ticket and ferry ticket receipt and get your merchandise ticket stamped at customs to get your GST back. See the Canada GST refund application for more details before you leave Canada.

Granville Island Great place for lunch but best to go an hour before or an hour after noon. It's very crowded during the noon hour and hard to find a place to sit. Great selection of foods.

Save some money I had the Frommer Vancouver book and it gave some great options to save money and still enjoy yourself.
