Rip-off

On the positive side, Sandman Downtown is central -ish. You can just about walk anywhere downtown (tho bear in mind that the walk to stanley park and back is just over an hour if you are planning to walk the park itself).

On the negative side
-very overpriced for the quality
-rooms are basic and a bit shabby considering te price. Not sure what the newer south tower is like but there are plenty of dull rooms in the north tower with depressing concrete views and virtually no sunlight.
-pool and jacuzzi also very basic
-queues at reception can be long
-staff v unhelpful. I met over a dozen different people at reception during my 4 day stay. I was awaiting a very important couriered letter but each time i asked at reception I had to give all my details again. It turned out that Fed-ex had delivered the letter early in my stay but Sandman had not accepted it.
-very little information available in the hotel re tour details etc in the vancouver area

A Mixture of Good and Bad.

First, the positives. The rooms in the Sandman are quite nice, and you can get some good views of the Inlet from the right rooms. Also the Moxie's in the hotel is a good place to eat. You are also in a fairly central location close to Robson St. and the water.

Now, the negatives. This hotel is sloooowww. It was peak season, but we had to wait forever for the elevator going up the North Tower almost every time we used it. This can be frustrating, especially if you are on a higher floor. Also, getting anything done at the desk was a minimum ten minute wait, which will also test your patience, especially as the desk has to let you in to the 'business center' to check your e-mail.

Also, while the hotel is fairly central, it's not close enough to Stanley Park or the downtown waterfront to be a comfortable round-trip walk. If you have to drive to the sights you might as well stay at a cheaper place in North Vancouver (Capilano) or Richmond and save a lot of money and only have to drive a few more minutes to get to where you are going. That's what I'll be doing next time I stay in Vancouver.

Location is the best

The room was small but clean. The a/c quit but maintenance was there within 5 minutes to fix it.

Best part of the hotel is the location. Right across the street from GM Place where I was going to see a concert.

I would stay there again.

The hotel itself was alright! No real complanits. Its about a five to ten minute walk to the main strech of Robson st. We had a standard room, which was pretty small. The one thing that really makes this hotel enjoyable was Moxies Grill and the Ghost bar downstairs! Great food and drinks! Its a great location to stay when attending an event at GM place, located right next door. When ever there is a concert or sporting event going on... Moxies, the Ghost bar, and Sport club next door are the place to be! Very entertaining!

This hotel is located in a great area down town, its a short walk away to the harbor, or a 5 min cab drive away from stanley park. Theres many nice restaruants and shops within a minutes walk. During my stay there were building a fancy looking restaruant into the premises.

This Hotel has a really contemporary look to it. The lobby looks great, nothing spectacular like many of the upscale hotels such as the Pinnacle, or the Renaissaince but it is nice and tranquil.

I would really suggest getting a room with a kitchenette, once again the rooms have a contempory look, and theres a store right across the street, where you can buy a few groceries.

Rooms have a balcony, and it is well worth the money staying here.

An Okay Hotel

We selected this hotel based upon reviews from other Tripadvisor members. When we arrived the first room we checked into didn't have working AC, so it was extremely warm. When we complained to the management, they immediately gave us a different room. Compared to other hotels we've stayed at, the rooms were somewhat small, but still comfortable.

If I visited Vancouver again, I'm not sure I would stay at this hotel again though...I'd probably look for one of the larger chains to stay with.

Stayed in this hotel from April 21-22; only two nights. Vancouver is a beautiful place. This hotel is conveniently located and the staff are very friendly. The only problem, however was the painting in the parking garage. When we first checked in the fumes were overwhelming. I nearly got sick and my wife found it difficult to breathe. Their just was not proper ventilation and I guess the temp was hot for this time of year. This contributed to strong odors of paint. We just loved the city so much that we didn't care too much after we got to our room. The rooms are small and the ice machine was on a different floor. Moxies is great and there was a friendly waitress that made our dinner very relaxing and enjoyable. The price was reasonable and we had a great time even though we thought we might get toxic poisoning. :)

The Sandman Hotel Downtown is an overall average property. Its major advantage is its central location, near BC/GM Place it is also located in the business district so I was not too worried about security or being alone at night. The rooms are okay there are nothing special but simply decorated. The Moxies Bar and Grill is excellent and the indoor pool and spa are quite nice. I would recommend this hotel to anyone on a budget who wants a clean/ comfortable/ safe place to stay but not to those who expect an extravagant hotel.

Drove from the Seattle area and stayed 1 night. Nicely situated near the main downtown streets and right next to GM place. The room was neat and clean if small, but that's not a big deal. We found the elevator's were not that slow, normal. Very nice staff. $8.00 to park. That's not posted on their website. Very economical place to stay.

Great Service - Central Location

We stayed at this hotel recently and had a very nice experience. The hotel is definitely a good locale. Walking distance to shopping, restaurants, a boat to Granville Island and a short drive to Stanley park. We had two small children with us and even they managed to enjoy the walks around the city. So if its just adults, even better for getting around by foot! The front desk personel were very helpful and had great ideas for what to do and see. The room was nice and we had one with a great view of the city. I would stay here again!

Top Local Tips for Vancouver

no airport transfers If you require transport from airport to hotel make sure that your hotel is part of the service. I got a shock to find my vouchers were useless as my hotel did not subscribe to the service during the winter months however it is often cheaper to get a taxi (if more than one person ) depending on the location of your hotel

Yums! Head to 'Wild Rice' restaurant if you have a chance while you're in Vancouver. Amazing martinis and funky atmosphere. Tasty mussels and interesting dishes. It's very close to Tinsel Town if you feel like having a little break from being a tourist and relaxing for dinner and a movie.

Whale Watching Drive to Steveston and go whale watching - you dont have to go the Vancouver Island!
