Beautiful setting on the Bay

This was a great hotel....just what we were looking for. Great view of the harbor and the sea planes landing and taking off. The hotel was in short walking distance of several great restaurants and shopping.

Great Weekend Getaway

We stayed two nights at the Renaissance December 3rd and 4th, 2004. The location is great if you want to be close to everything. The service was as good as we've had anywhere from the bellboys, to the front desk, to the room service. Very attentive and the rooms are great. Ask for a high floor when making your reservation so you can enjoy the view.

Nov 2004: Early November in Vancouver is rainy, overcast and somewhat chilly when the wind picks up, but many things make the trip worthwhile. The level of service at the Renaissance Harbourside Hotel is one of them. This is a medium-sized hotel with a boutique feel without the commensurate price.

The panoramic view from rooms on the harbour-facing side of the hotel - of the fog-clad north shore across Burrard Inlet, framed by an autumnal Stanley Park on the left and the "sails" of Canada Place on the right - is stunning. Service is personal and top notch. The doormen, porters and parking valets are attentive. A Hertz car rental counter is conveniently located in the lobby but it is only open until 4:30pm. A nice security feature is that the hotel elevators require your room passcard to be inserted before you can press buttons to get to your floor (no pass card is required to get to the revolving restaurant at the top, or to get down to the lobby from any floor). Food at the Vista revolving restaurant is delicious, complementing the view, but the chairs are not very comfortable and the food is comparatively pricy at approx CAD$65 per person excluding beverages. Decor in my room was typically mid-range - clean, tasteful and business-friendly but not to be mistaken for swank. Heated ceramic tile floors in the bathroom are a nice touch but the water pipes do make some noise and the ventilation fans don't remove steam very quickly during a hot shower. Altogether a comfortable room, though, and quite acceptable for short-stay business travelers.

Hint: keep the curtains open at night and watch the float-planes silently landing on the water.

The hotel is close to the boutiques and restaurants of Robson Street and not too far from neighbourly Denham Street in the West End, but a bit of a hike to Davie village. Two SkyTrain stations are within a 5-minute walk and the muted mag-lev hum of the occasional briefly passing train is slightly more noticeable from the eastern end of the hotel, although certainly nothing out of the ordinary in terms of typical background city noise. The clubs and bars of Granville Street are about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, as is the downtown Pacific Centre shopping mall. All in all, this would be a great hotel for a summer stay, but like the Marriott Pinnacle right across the street, most of the hotels on the Coal Harbour "business" side of downtown Vancouver feel somewhat isolated when you have to walk through the rain in the Fall and Winter.

The trip to/from Vancouver Airport by taxi is approx CAD$35 each way, and takes about 20 minutes. Don't forget there are no highways (freeways) between the airport in suburban Richmond and downtown Vancouver, so the trip from the airport will take you along major arterial roads (with stoplights) and across one of the 3 bridges that span False Creek before you get into the downtown peninsula.

Autumn Break in Vancouver

The Hotel was wonderful. We stayed for 5 nights at the end of October and we very much enjoyed the Hotel. There is building work in front of the Hotel, but this did not impact on our enjoyment. Ask for a room on about the 12 floor and you will enjoy stunning views of Stanley Park. The hotel realised it was my birthday and I even received a card. Great location really safe and the hotel staff were wonderful.

Excellent service. Our waiter, Pavlo was attentive and our meal was such a pleasure because of him. The meal's presentation was spectacular and the quaity of the meal surpassed our expectations. The Manager, Tim Saunders, came to our table and asked how our meal was. Over all us four women had a outstanding time.

We found the Renaissance to be a perfect place for pre/post Alaska cruise lodging. It's far enough from Robson and "central" Vancouver to be quiet yet nearby so you can walk everywhere. Room was recently remodeled and was very comfy, but I'd ask for a high floor because our room overlooked the air conditioning system. Overall, I'd stay there or the nearby Marriott Pinnacle again!

Best location

Our family stayed at the Renaissance the first week in August and it was a great choice. The views on the harborside are phenomenal, even with the construction taking place behind it. We learned that the building they are constructing will only impact views from the fourth floor down, so if you get a room about the fourth floor, you'll still get one of the best views of the harbor. The service was outstanding, and the rooms are spacious, if a little outdated. There is a little bit of noise after 8 a.m. when construction begins, but it didin't really bother us. It's right across from the Marriott, and I believe the view makes it a good value.

the entire crew were so nice. i needed to change
a room and the accomodated me very quickly
without complaint.

Construction Crazy

Just back from two nights vacation at this property. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful, however there is just no avoiding the construction site mentioned in other reviews. We were fortunate to have been upgraded to the absolutely "would be" breathtaking view had it not been for the crane outside our balcony. What was much worse was the very loud noise that starts up early each morning. Not exactly a place you want to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or let the breezes in.

The rooms were a little tired in decor, just average with low ceilings and rather dark all over. Again no complaints on service, really a terrific staff. However given the proximity to the construction site I'd rather stay at the Westin harbourside.

Renaissance--but you better get there soon!

We stayed at the Renaissance two weeks ago for 2 nights and I was most impressed by the lobby, a 2-story affair with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor and snow-capped mountains beyond. But they are building office/retail space accross the street, so that view will be history, so get there soon! However, I chose this hotel for its reasonable price (the best rates were on the hotel website) and its waterfront location. You can watch the sea planes take off and land (the noise is not unpleasant). Our room was small, with a king-size bed and the decor was average motel quality, but there was a heated tile floor in the bathroom (nice in cool weather, but a little off-putting in 80 degree weather). There's a great pedestrian walk behind the building that takes you all along the harbor. The staff was wonderful, courteous and friendly. We walked to several great restaurants in the area. Overall, a very pleasant stay, and if you're on a budget, you get a lot for your dollar.

I have stayed at Renaissance hotels in London, Brussels, and in the USA and found the Vancouver Renaissance to be world class. Spectacular lobby and view, incredibly accomodating staff, room and bath were spotless, free business center, fabulous pool/spa/workout facility. The Club Level lounge was wonderful for a light breakfast and staffed by a VERY pleasant and helpful woman. Parking extra at $20(Canadian) with in/out. Very close to shopping, Gastown, and a beautiful walk along the water to Stanley Park. I hartily recommend this hotel.

Top Local Tips for Vancouver

Vancouver Aquarium Great place, really well done. Fun for all ages. We have gone twice as an add-on to a Whistler vacation. Stay one night in Vancouver to do the aqarium then head up the mountain. We went with 3yr old, 1 yr old, parents and Grandparents all enjoyed it.

Use the buses Take the bus or the Skytrain around town. I did a lot of walking and sightseeing, wonderful exercise.

Grab the SeaBus to North Vancouver Take the 15 minute ride on the Sea Bus (shuttle) to Quay Market in North Vancouver. It is right next to the Sea Bus terminal and on the water. All the freshest foods (fruits, fish, meats, salads, eateries) are under one roof. Enjoy a lunch at one of the many food stalls or head upstairs for some shopping.
