I stayed at this location - I rather liked it. Very good location - sure not the best neighborhood, but centrally located and very safe. The price was great, room extremely clean. The front desk staff was very helpful. Oh yes, the internet worked fine.
Ignorant staff and seedy area

While the rooms were reasonably clean, the hotel manager and some of the staff were ignorant beyond compare. I had to wait 7 days to move a room that had internet access, only to be abused by the manager when I complained about the delay. He further insulted both myself and my wife by accusing us of lying about the lack of internet access after he had already acknowledged, and accused me of not being able to speak English (I am English, born and bred!). The area is seedy, with homeless stinky people going throught the trash outside the hotel to get bottles and cans, and there are peep shows across the street. Dont come here if you are a lady travelling along, and i wouldnt bring my wife or children here at all, for sure. However, if you dont mind some of the tramps, peepshows and insulting staff, then this is the place for you, but dont book online as their price promise is not honoured. My colleague got 40% off the advertised rate by when he booked late. Having said that, the cleaning staff and some of the receptionists are very friendly, but be warned.

This hotel is a great deal. Staff very friendly and helpful (and knowledgeable). Very busy place. Room was not big but very nicely decorated. Newly redone? Very nice place I highly recommend.
Rude and poor service

The clerk we had was the most rude and disrespectful individuals. We booked our room through motels.com and there was a mistake in the reservation. The clerk did not care and lied about not having extra rooms until we offered to pay extra. I will never stay at this motel again.

It doesn't matter if you want to enjoy Vancouver by day or by night, you can't beat the central location of this clean modern Howard Johnson hotel.
By night, enjoy being in the heart of the Theater district. The hotel is only a short walk from Vancouver's Commodore Ball Room and the Art Deco land mark, The Apollo Theater. Check the Georgia Straight paper for listings (it's free).
By day, the hotel is a stone throw to Beach Street, a short walk accesses The Vacouver Aquatic Centre, False Creek and (bring your roller blades), Sunset beach. If thats not your thing you can catch the bus outside your door and in two stops take in trendy Grandville Island.
The hotel it's self was better than expected. The rooms are fine, altough not large, they are nicely appointed, queen bed, halogen lighting, small writing desk, TV, shower with bath.
The hotel contains a South Beach style restaurant and included with the price of your room they serve a full bacon & egg breakfast including coffee.
You get all this, breakfast, room, room tax & gst for just under 80 bucks a night Canadian.
Need to get back to the Airport. You can practically catch the city bus to the airport outside your door. For $3.25, after 6pm and on weekends $2.25, I believe it's the B line that takes you there. Just ask at the front desk. To get to Howard Johnson's, exit the B line bus at Davie St.
Rateing? It's where I'm staying my next trip to Vancouver.

My wife and I are from Victoria, BC and often take the ferry to Vancouver.
We came accross the brochure of the Howard Johnson for $59.00 through April 2005. We took it to the hotel and was given $69.00 with breakfast instead. We were pleased with the service and had the room is nice.
We recommend this hotel to anyone.

I recommend Howard Johnson Hotel because of its downtown location, excellent friendly staffs, beautiful rooms, helpful housekeepers, and free breakfast at Wildfire.
I'll tell all my friends in Japan to use only Howard Johnson when they visit Vancouver!

i thought this hotel was amzing for the price. centrally located. we were considering staying elsewhere at twice the price
the staff were extremely helpful, we had tons of touristy questions Im sure they hear 100 times a day but he helped us like it was the first time he had heard!
indian lady that checked us out was not very personable. she never made eye contact and was very cold and machine like. this alone almost soured our wonderful experience

My husband and I stayed at the Howard Johnson Hotel for the weekend to get away from our busy life. We walked through Granville Street where Ramada Inn, Best Western and Holiday Inn are located and we saw this little hotel called Howard Johnson Hotel, as we walk in we noticed the boutique feel lobby and nice colors used. We check -inn for the night and ended up staying for an extra day for this hotel has it all! Great new rooms, smells good with new furniture and carpet and beautifully design hallways. I only spend $89.00 per night and had free american breakfast! The staff at the front desk are very helpfull and the room is very clean! We also enjoyed the restaurant called "Wildfire" they have great Martinis.
We also enjoyed the night club "Crush" and we got in for free. The Hotel also offered us free pass to Fitness World just half a block from the hotel.
I highly recommend this hotel and will recommend this to all my friend.
One thing though, Granville Street has very diversed personalities. We found tourist and locals alike walking up and down Granville, I guess it something to do with the transit system running on Granville Streeet. Nightmare hotel!!

Do not stay here if you value your vacations! I only needed a hotel room for one night in Vancouver and decided to book through travelocity. Driving to this location I was already getting worried. The area is suspect and had various homeless people and shady characters around the hotel. Upon check-in, the front desk advised me that I should empty out my rental car as cars are regularly broken into and/or stolen from the lot beside this hotel. My room was facing the main street, on the second floor and right over the bus stop!! Even worse, my room wreaked of paint as this hotel is repainting all the rooms. Although the front desk offerred to move me to another room..I still checked-out and moved to another hotel (Marriott Pinnacle - AWESOME PLACE). Here's the reason for my move - there was a prostitute down the hall from my room!!! Enough said.

My husband and I were stayed there in October 2004. It was very comfortable and clean with the best price that I found in the city. It was at a 15 minutes walk to the Vancouver convention center.

I was reviewing the comments about the Howard Johnson Hotel before I reserve a room and came across a very bad comment . I thought of cancelling my reservation however, the great savings was in my mind and I said to myself " what the heck" I'll try it. We got to the hotel and we cannot believe that this hotel is more than what we payed for...We got a room with 2 beds on the 3rd floor facing Granville, our room had this welcoming and home feeling colors with new carpets and furnitures. The hallways looks newly renovated with great pictures on the walls. Staff are very friendly and I enjoyed my room service breakfast as well. We were given free pass to fitness world and Crush night club. These people that made those bad comments should go back and check it out for this hotel is not what they say it was! This is a great Howard Johnson Hotel and I recommend it highly.

Never Again

Upon arriving at the Howard Johnson in a taxi we wished we could have turned the taxi around and gone home! Granville street was awash with junkies, vagrants and peep shows. We couldn't believe our holiday company would leave us in a place like this.
Once inside, the hotel staff weren't particularly welcoming. We took the stairs to our room and the smell was disgusting. To make things worse it smelt like they were trying to cover it up with air freshener. The staff didn't have much local knowledge about bars or restaurants.
We were disappointed with the decor of the hotel as it is old and dated.
The walls of the room were extremely thin as we could hear every word of conversations in the corridor and we could also hear the people in the room next door. We were kept awake by their nocturnal activities for two out of our three nights! We had a non-smoking room but each time someone lit a cigarette in a nearby room the smell wafted into ours even with the door and window closed.
The restaurant attached to the Hotel called Wildfire was good. The staff are extremely nice and the food is very good value for money. The decor is modern with a good atmosphere. It didn't surprise me to find out that Wildfire merely rent the space from the hotel and manage the restaurant themselves. We discovered this when we tried, unsuccessfully, to charge our meal to our room.
We paid nearly $220 a night and were expecting much better. Basically for our money all we got was a bed in a small shabby room in a red light district.
I wouldn't stay at the Howard Johnson again even if you paid me.

Top Local Tips for Vancouver
Vancouver Trolley Bus Tour Do take advantage of this if you're a tourist without your own transport. Pretty cheap and the ticket is valid for 2 consecutive days, so you don't have to rush around trying to do everything in a day. DON'T rely on the Vancouver airport AIRPORTER sevice when returning to the airport. Fortunately we had left plenty of time, as 2 successive airporters refused to pick us up and we wre standing waiting for an hour!
Get into the forests! There are lovely mountains and forests very close to the city! Don't spend all your trip inside.
Day Fare Pass Available at the 7/11 store closeby. Travel all you want in the bus/train/sea-bus in a day. Avialbale for CAD 8 per person.
