Historical Traveller Reviews of Four Seasons Vancouver Hotel

one of top 3 hotels in Vancouver

from KevinSdammit
It's the 4Seasons, and it's the level you'd expect.
Very high end, extreme service, lavish surroundings.

The location is perfect, along with the Hotel Vancouver across the street, directly across from the Vancouver Art Gallery, the back side of which is Robson Square, the start of Robson street (majour attraction).

Also, the hotel is attached to Pacific Centre, which offers a nice mix of high end & medium end shopping.

It's pricey, but in this instance, you get what you pay for.

Nice but not quite as expected

Location is great for shopping in the winter as you can access the shopping mall directly and therefore don't need a coat and can easily go back to your room to drop off bags. Reception was very friendly at check in and check out but did try hard to sell us an upgrade. We checked in early and were told there was a superior room available now for an extra $60. We said no, that we would wait. We were then told that another type of room was available for a $20 upgrade fee. Again, we said no that we would wait. At that point she managed to find us a room that was ready and within the price we booked. It was nice that our room was ready early but I didn't like how they tried twice to upsell and made it appear our room type wasn't ready.

Unless you want to be able to directly access the shopping mall, I prefer the Vancouver Fairmont Waterfront which is on the water only 4 blocks away. I find the service comparable but the hotel newer and with better views.

Great Visit

We stayed at the Four Seasons over the Christmas holiday. I was impressed by the high level of service from all the staff working there, from the doormen. front desk, bellmen, maintenance and maids. Everyone did their best to make our stay comfortable.

Our room was a corner deluxe which was spacious with plenty of room for my family. Furnishings were comfortable and understated, not lavish or showy which was fine with me. Location was perfect, it was very easy to get around the downtown area. The hotel is also connected to the Pacific Center mall which was convenient for shopping, yet completly removed from the Christmas crowds once you enter the second floor lobby of the hotel.

Stayed 4 days at the Four Seasons over the Thanksgiving holiday. Reserved a 2 br suite because 5 family members in all were with us.

In sum, the service of the hotel made the stay. The room was very large -- living/dining room separating king bedroom on one side and double bedroom on the other -- ensuring privacy for all. 3 baths and 3 tvs helped as well.

Most impressive was the staff at the front desk and the concierge. Because this was our first visit to Vancouver, we asked for many recommendations re restaurants, tourists sites, directions, etc. They were superb and right on the money in each case (eg. recommended "Coast" restaurant for a newer, hipper restaurant .. excellent and fun and not in the guidebooks).

Location in downtown was great as shopping was literally connected to the lobby. Holt Renfrew dept store was was a wonderful surprise -- think Bergdorf Goodman without the attitude. Very stylish group of clothing boutiques within Holt Renfrew.

Bar was also lively and fun for cocktails. Terrace restaurant was fine for breakfast and lunch. Chartwell's is a bit dated -- needs to be enlivened and refreshed. Workout facility if fine (machines are around the indoor part of the pool) and well used. There is no spa, however, which is disappointing.

As others have noted, the decor is not top of the line Four Seasons. It's not worn or poorly maintained, but simply a bit old fashioned. Similarly, the lobby design is a bit awkward and confusing. That area could use a major makeover. The stairways to the conference floor obscure the space and cramp the Terrace Restaurant, front desk and dowdy seating area in front of the elevators.

All in all, I liked it more than I expected and would stay again.

Great Stay-Great Location

From a seasoned business traveler perspective, the Four Seasons is a very classic hotel with all the full service ammenities.
the entire staff from day to night personnel were outstanding
Location and convience - block away from Robson so you are close enough to all the restaurants and shops, but far enough away from all the hustle and bustle.
Room: great bed with high quality linens and nightly turndown service
Pool and Workout area: great indoor/outdoor pool, workout area was good for something quick. This area is staffed and well kepted.

Strengths and weaknesses at the Vancouver Four Seasons

I stayed at this property for three nights this month on vacation in the Premier room category. At check-in, I was offered an upgrade to an Executive Suite. After seeing the Suite, I decided to stick with my original room category. The Executive Suite was smaller (534 vs. 550 Sq. ft.) than the Premier room, and actually felt more claustrophobic due to division between the bedroom and sitting area.

Hotel strengths: Great health club/pool/outdoor area with excellent service. Nice view from rooms in SW corner of building. Quick room service. The hotel is well located to shopping and business districts and central to tourist attractions.

Hotel weaknesses: Faded/dated interior/furnishings. Food from Garden Terrace and room service is not as inventive as other Four Seasons properties. Hotel location is distant from cafes/restaurants/shops that cater to residential areas - some of Vancouver's more interesting places to shop and eat are away from this downtown location (this can be a problem if you want a decent bite at night outside the hotel without advance planning). Bathrooms are very small.

Additional experiences: On arrival, there was no porter or door man present to help with luggage. I also had a maintenance problem that was not resolved the first time. Only after the second visit was it resolved properly.

Under Rated Hotel

Had the pleasure of staying here for two days after our Alaskan Cruise. Seemed like most of the folks on our ship had opted for the Pan Pacific hotel, which seems to get far more attention than Four Seasons, which is really to bad. We had a wonderful stay--the room was quiet, well decorated, had very nice soaps, shampoos, evening turn down serivce, a really great indoor/outdoor pool, a very helpful and friendly staff, etc., etc. The hotel is centrally located and a great base for touring. THe only complaint I really have is that it is an expensive place to stay--I would not call it a great value, but if you want a deluxe experience, I would encourage you to consider a stay here.

Elegant in every way.

Stayed here in the winter. It was very nice! Outstanding location to explore Vancouver. Our room was fantastic. The decor was perfect and very classy. Even better than I expected from a 4 Seasons. Make sure to have breakfast in the restaurant. It is beautiful and very memorable. The pool area is very nice! Staff was very attentive. I definitly reccommend this hotel.

pleasantly surprised

This professionally run hotel is ideally situated in the middle of town. No request is too difficult for this top notch staff. The lovely indoor/outdoor pool makes one forget that one is anywhere near a city.

‘I’m so tired and I’m so weary’, the line from the old hymn ‘Peace in the Valley’ that Elvis recorded years ago, began to run through my mind the moment my feet touched the horribly outdated red brick floor of the entry lobby of the Four Seasons Vancouver. The refrain grew even louder as I ascended the escalator to view the please-replace-me-now carpet and furniture in the main lobby. Question: did all Four Seasons properties send their spare used furniture to Vancouver? Seriously, this place needs a remodel as bad as Donald Trump needs a new hairdo (and clipped eyebrows). As experienced travelers know, there’s nothing worse than having high expectations for a hotel, only to need an immediate shot of tequila or an IV valium drip to lower your blood pressure when checking into a sad hotel property. The good news in this case is that the rooms aren’t as bad as the lobby areas. A little tired, yes, but not worth leaving the hotel over. You just end up avoiding the hotel lobby at all costs (except for the breakfast buffet, which was very nice and hosted by a great group of hotel staff). Let’s hope the Vancouver property makes it to the top of the Four Seasons To-Do list, and at a minimum, the entry and main lobby areas. First impressions count, and my first inclination was to make a full 360 degree swing out the revolving door.

Chocolate Buffet @ Sutton Place Hotel Give this a try. Thu/Fri/Sat night, call for reservations - all the chocolate you can eat!

Wild Whales Vancouver, C Restaurant, Mountaineer Train to Whistler Wild Whales -- Book it and go. We saw the J Pod of Orcas, very moving experience. C-Restaurant - best food, most awesome view over the marina, excellent experience, Mountaineer Train To Whistler - beautiful scenery, nice tea service, free wine!! No driving :-)

Day activity Take the AquaBus from Downtown Vancouver over to Granville Island Market. It's a 5 minute trip and saves you drive time and parking plus you can get a good walk from downtown. It's about a 15 min walk from Robson to the end of Hornby Street where the Aquabus picks you up.
