Top Local Tips for Waterton Park

Red Rock Canyon worth the drive Red Rock Canyon is a short drive (about 30 minutes) from the Prince of Wales Hotel and is a very worthwhile destination. The drive is very scenic, fields are full of wild flowers in June, the colors in the mountains beautiful and the rock formations interesting. Once you arrive at Red Rock Canyon there is a nice, easy 20 minute walking trail around the edge of the canyon to view the water below and the stunning colors of the canyon walls. There are also other, longer trails to walk on too.

diving at Waterton There is a nice scuba dive in Emerald bay just below the Prince of Wales hotel. A paddle boat is on the bottom in 20 to 60 feet of water on a steep slope. Visibility is good to 40 feet and then declines quickly to zero, in July. Supposedly better in spring and fall. The bottom is otherwise featureless, so one dive is enough.

Boat trip is nice, hiking is great Take a really warm sweater if you do the boat trip, the lake is glacier fed and can be extremely cold. But you are almost guaranteed to see wildlife, including feeding bears and bald eagles. Red Earth Creek is a great stroll, and there is a nice hike (about 1 hour) to some waterfalls from the same parking lot.
