Top Local Tips for Jasper
Mount Edith Cavell If you get the chance get yourself here. The road up teams with wildlife; we saw bear and elk. The glacier walk is spectacular but not for the faint hearted. It is advertised as wheelchair friendly but no way!! The pathway is not wide enough to take a full size chair and the person pushing whould have a heart attack after the first 200 yards it is so steep.There is a lovely secluded picnic area by the car park, just right for relaxing on completion of the walk.
Best time to visit? Weather can be very mixed for an early visit so we tend to visit towards the end of June, early July. Unfortunately you do get a lot more tourists at the hot spots but as independent travellers with your own transport you can choose when to visit these places, the best time being later in the day! It can get very hot quickly, so expect temperatures to range from 5 degrees to 35 degrees in a matter of hours or less should you get caught in a thunderstorm in the mountains as we did this year! There are plenty of nice places to eat in Jasper and suggest you try as many different ones as possible. We found the staff in all the establishments we visited very friendly and welcoming and prices generally reasonable. Don't forget the 15 per cent tip each time.
Walking options Recommend the cavell meadows walk - its great. Views of the glacier are spectacular. Dont be put off that its one of the popular ones. If I went to this part of the Rockies again, I would stay further out - we found we drove to Jasper each day so there was no need to be so close in. You seem to pay a premium being so close to the town.
