Tips for Hiking Jasper/Banff areas If you like to hike, be sure to check out Stanley Glacier and Mt Edit Cavell while in the area. These two hikes offered the most amazing, breathtaking views I've ever seen! We went on these hikes pretty early in the morning (9am), and there weren't many people there. We also liked the Third Wind Pass near Canmore. We were the only people on this hike, and again the views were amazing. Skip Johnston Canyon - it's extremely crowded and kind of lame. Lake Louise was obviously great - but hike up to Lake Agnes and at least the Little Beehive to get away from the crowds and enjoy the view below. We also liked Lake Maligne, and we got there early (9am) when no one else was there. Lakes Peyto and Moraine (go canoeing!) were nice too - but again go early to avoid the crowds. We also liked getting lunch to go at all of the sandwich shops in Jasper/Banff/Canmore and eating at the many picnic stops in the area.
Must See - Maligne Canyon The hike along the Maligne canyon was probably the highlight of our hikes. Starting from the fifth bridge and going south, I was treated to a wide variety of settings, from the peaceful woodland path of the first part to the roaring falls at the end. There were far fewer people in the first section of the trail, which made it more pleasant for me, but I wouldn't miss the falls and rapids even though it was somewhat crowded. I would also recommend the hike at Old Fort Point. Our guide book recommended a counter-clockwise tour, but I think it would have been easier and less challenging if we had gone the clockwise route. Also, about in the middle there is part of the trail recommended for horses which is somewhat longer, but the rise is very gentle and the setting is so peaceful, I think it is the much better choice. Hope you enjoy this as much as we did.
Rafting & mountains I'd recommend booking the white water rafting down the Athabasca river. Fun, exhilarating, safe plus great views of the glacier and surrounding area. Also if you can take a helicopter over Whistler Mountain and glaciers - awesome!
