Historical Traveller Reviews of Fantasyland Hotel

not much of a fantasy

from Zemmers
In the past years we have stayed at the Fantasyland hotel. Some were good times some were just awful. Issues such as jacuzzi's not working, smelly unclean rooms, linens that are stained with unmentionable things. Rooms that are not sound proof, old beds and old furnishings.
I could go on and on,but the way this hotel goes on about how great it is and so on it is not. It is very expensive and hard to book a room(always booked up).You can find very nice hotels with much more better prices(and some of these hotels have great jacuzzi's). Honestly it isn't much better than those cheesy honeymoon motels you see in movies. For that price we pay I want things to be a true fantasy. They need to renovate, and get new ideas. Plus there are way to many children there( I am sorry but its anoying when you can hear them all night or they are banging on your door). We do enjoy the jacuzzi and you can goto the mall thats it. All in all its not worth it to use our hard earned money on this hotel again.I am going to find a newer near by hotel next time. ps the staff was nice and friendly.

Cheesy and uncomfortable

from TrailmixCalgary
We stayed at the Fantasyland last week for 2 nights. My Husband was there on business so we decided to make a trip of it and booked the Polynesian Room. The room is not pretty - it's just kind of corny. The bed is pretty uncomfortable (I measured it - they quote Queen Size but the mattress is actually double - doesn't quite fit in the frame they have around it). There is a large jacuzzi which is Very noisy (you can hear the jacuzzi in the room above as well) and has little clouds painted above it (which looks very cheesy).

The bed has a mirrored ceiling with two pot lights in it that shine right down on your face. The airconditioner drips when it's off.

On the upside the room was on the 10th floor and the view is lovely.

This room obviously hasn't been updated in about 20 years, from the hunter green carpets to the truly uncomfortable rattan furniture to the tap end on the faucet that kept falling off, this place needs maintenance.

The staff were quite nice and we did receive an upgrade to a 'luxury' room when we requested it, but the bottom line is it isn't worth the money.

We stayed in one of their executive suites a couple of years ago - which had 2 queen size beds and a jacuzzi and this is really better value for your money and much more comfortable. So unless you have small children that would get a kick out of silly decorations, you might want to go with a regular room.

Watch Out

from A TripAdvisor Member
We planned our trip for months, being on a limited budget with limited time. Fantasyland Hotel sounded like the perfect get-a-way, convenient, fun and the right price.

Upon arriving we checked into the Polynesian room again exactly what we expected. Until at 12:30 AM we started to smell smoke coming out of our vents. We immediately phoned the front desk, they promptly informed us they would send someone up to check our vents and find out if they could shut them off or fix the problem. After waiting 1/2 hour with no one showing up we received a phone call from the front desk...informing us that they found a customer in a room close to ours who admitted to smoking. We asked if they had been fined and they said no. It is a health hazard for me to be in a smoking room, due the fact I am 4 mths pregnant. Then he informed us he could move us to a different room, but not to another Polynesian room, the one we had paid for. We were exhausted and accepted his offer to move us to the Victorian Coach room. He finally moved us to the new room at 1:30, an hour after the incident and we had to request for him to move our luggage. He apologized and offered us 2 free breakfasts (of which we already had with our Fantasyland Fun Package).

Upon arriving in the new room, we promptly went to bed. After trying to fall asleep for 30 mins. we realized that the heater would not stop blowing out hot air. So, we opened the window. Problem solved. Then we started to hear a dripping sound. Much to our dismay, both the jacuzzi & the sink were dripping. To make matters worse the bed was extremely hard. I finally fell asleep at 4AM in the morning. At 3AM we pondered calling the front desk again...but what was the use if it would take 1 hour to move us again. At that point in time we decided to discuss what had happened in the morning with the manager as the night front desk person had promised us.

Upon check out, my husband talked to the check out lady. Who informed him she was very sorry for what happened but there was nothing she could do. After debating with her for 15 mins she finally gave us $25 off of our bill. No good! We asked to talk to the manager.

We were told he was in a meeting and to come back later. We asked when, they would not tell us a time. No problem, we went to the mall and toured for a couple of hours. Upon returning my husband asked again. Again, he was in a meeting. So, we decided to go to someone higher. He talked to the headoffice in the mall, and promptly received an appointment with him. To make a long story short. We were told it was not the hotels fault that one of its patrons was caught smoking in a non-smoking room. There would be no compensation for our room, except for the breakfast and the $25. The hotel was not willing to do anything more, regardless of whether or not it was a health risk. We were also informed, had we asked, we would have been moved to another hotel.

Due to how we were treated as paying customers, we will never go to Fantasyland Hotel again.

from WinterEscape
My husband and I have stayed at the Fantasy Land hotel every year for the past ten years. For the past four years we have included our children now four and two in the trip. We go during the winter for a nice break. I especially enjoy that I can get some shopping done while the kids are napping in the room. It is very hard to get any shopping done with two small children so this is a nice way to do it. My family also enjoys stoping at the movie theatre in the mall and getting popcorn to take to the room to watch a movie in there. The water park is fun for the kids but overall we are pertty sure this will be our last visit. The mall/hotel/waterpark is all very run down. The hotel rooms are old out dated and very dirty. They are way over priced for the condition. The mall in turn is in the same condition. The food courts are old and dirty as well as GalazyLand and the water park. The mall needs a major renovation job and clean up but unfortunately the money does not seem to be there. So after ten years of visiting annually we will not longer return due to the poor conditions of the hotel and facility.

Truly a Fantasy Getaway

My wife & I stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel and had one of the most amazing times we have ever experienced. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were happy. We received breakfast and waterpark passes and a beautiful Arabian Room. The hotel was undergoing some renovations which the staff said they are doing regularily, and it showed. The room was perfect! The giant jacuzzi tubs could house a small family and once we put bubbles into them, we felt like kids again. It was worth every penny and we'll go back again and again. Thank you for the memorable vacation! You guys rock!

We stayed in theme room Aug. 2003 two nights enjoyed the stay was new and exciting to us.
Also enjoyed the When in Rome package which included an absolutely delicious meal, bottle of wine and a fruit, cracker and cheese plate. We
did not have any complaints with the Polynesian Room, or our stay at that time.
But we also stayed in Roman Room September 2004, it was very disapointing. Although we did not complain to Hotel Management. I am regreting not doing so since I feel they would have done their
best to make things right. The room was not clean while having Jacuzy Clumps of hair, not ours! The T.V. remote did not work, I also found a long black hair on marble surround of the bed. The location of our room seemed to bad. We found it to be quite noisy. In my opinion the cleaning ladies need to clean up their act. We probably will not be returning to stay in Fantasyland Hotel.

No tickets please. Dean

Dean is his name and rooms are his game. Dean is one guy that I will never forget and I did not. I have written a past note on this hotel and got the name wrong. Sorry Neal your done in.Dean is one of the best for help there is, we need some info on the town and he provided the info we needed in a quick like lickty split. Thanks for you help. I have a diffrent feel for this hotel after staying there for the second time. I do like it. The first 2 nights we stayed in the water park theme room and we liked it. But some bad planing on my part we had to move to another room with a queen size bed that did not work out to well for my wife she had to sleep in one of the bunkbeds with my 6 year old son (hehehehe) but it was very large and comfortalble for us. We will stay there agian when in town. The hotel did have some small problems with it power going out for a time ( thought I was home) but it did not affect the us. Thanks again for your help DEAN. A fantasy come true...

from bigeasy41
Magnificent hotel right in the largest mall in the world. Our family stayed there for 3 nights and we rented 2 adjoining executive suites which gave us plenty of room. Due to a special they were having the price of the rooms included free admission to the water park, amusement park and a hot breakfast in the morning! We had a great stay and will be back for sure.

Family of five had a great time

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family of five recently stayed here for two nights and had a great time. We booked the Luxury Igloo room on a Summer Fun package which included room, taxes, family attraction passes, pizza/choc/sodas, and continental breakfasts. The room was spacious and clean (not outdated but not luxurious either). My girls loved the "theme" element and the proximity to the mall, waterpark, and amusement park. The staff was helpful and nice. It was a great stay for two days!

Information given mis-leading

from cbird
We stayed in an executive room for three nights at this hotel. The checkin staff were very helpful and the room was very large and well decorated and maintained. The hot tub was huge and the bathroom well designed. The only complaint I have is that when I made the reservation by telephone I was told that the room rate included admission to the theme parks. As I had booked three rooms for three nights I assumed that we would have admission for three days. Not so! Only one admission PER STAY! This is a gross misrepresentation and one which I am at a loss to understand. They clearly do not want guests to stay more than one night.

Top Local Tips for Edmonton

Not worth the stay Say in many of the newer close by hotels in the area and drive to the mall.

West Edmonton Mall When we spent our week in the Fantasyland Hotel we checked in on a Sunday and checked out on a Friday. We both found the malll is much less crowded and easier to get around durring the week. If you don't do well with big crowds this is the time to shop at the mall.

Not kept up - It is not clean. There was dust in the corners, stains on the rugs, cigarette burns on the countertops of this no smoking room, and the housekeeping staff put no fresh coffee in our rooms, left dirty coffee cups in the rooms, coffee grounds in the coffee makers, and dirty glasses laying in the room after they cleaned it. - We requested grape jelly with our toast in the morning and a big luxury hotel like this has only two choices; raspberry and strawberry. The jelly and jam came in small tear open containers, and it was old, hard and difficult to spread and obviously not fresh. -the carpets had stains, and ripples in the where they needed to be stretched out again. They really just needed to be replaced. This hotel was nice initially, but it is not being kept up at all. It is obvious that all of the money is being taken out of this place and none is being put back in. -we stayed in a "Roman room" and around the hot tub, in the room, were cracks that needed to be caulked. When you are sitting in the hot tub, you look at these cracks, and you wonder what is in them; mold, bugs etc.? -the cabinets in the room are Formica and the Formica is cracked broken, and peeling off. -the baseboards are faux marble. They are split and cracked and in places need be replaced. -the paint is scratched and worn. This place needs a paint job real bad. -I could go on and on, but there's no point. I would not stay again in this "luxury"
