I thoughly enjoyed my stay at the Sandman Hotel very much, in fact they helped me out while I was there. I had car trouble and they were very helpful in try to help me start my vechicle and let my daughter stay in the room until the problem was fixed. I truly appreciated the helpfulness of the staff that they gave me. The rooms were very clean and the hotel itself was very becoming. My daughter and I plan on staying there again in the near future.
Excellent all-round option

The hotel was centrally located. The suite was very well furnished and presented. The restaurant downstairs was very good and also reasonably priced. The only minor reservation was the businesses facing the hotel were representatives of the sex industry - videos, etc. On arrival, this gave us the impression that we had made a bad choice. The hotel itself, however, was very professional and within safe and easy walking distance of the city centre.

Good deal and location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent a week in Banff and had an 8am flight out of Calgary Saturday morning, so I booked the Sandman for Friday night instead of trying to drive back in to Calgary from Banff that morning. I actually got my rate from the (---) website after booking our flight and it was $80/night (including taxes). I paid in advance so we didn't have to hassle w/that when we got to the hotel, so that was nice. We checked in a little later in the evening (not wanting to leave Banff!) so we ended up w/a first floor room - along the corridor where the exercise room, pool, and Moxie's restaurant were located. We thought it would be loud but it was fine. We got some dessert in Moxies, and it was a very nice place - not a typical hotel restaurant from my experience, but a really cool restarant that happens to have a hotel attached to the back of it. The Sandman was aesthetically pleasing w/a nice fireplace and dark woodwork in the lobby. Our room also had nice decor. It was clean and well maintained. We thought we could hookup our laptop in the room to the internet but didn't find an easy way to do that (possibly b/c we were really tired) but, b/c of our location on the 1st floor, easily stumbled into the business center that has a couple computers in there for free internet use (there's also a printer, but I'm not sure if there's a charge for printing). We didn't get a chance to use the pool or fitness area but we looked at them (unfortunately, that doesn't burn calories, and they were very nice). Even though we left at (ugh) 6am to return our car and check in for our int'l flight to the US, there were still some apples and other small breakfast items out in the lobby, so that was nice too. When we checked in, I could hear airplanes easily b/c you really ARE close to the airport (it took us about 5 minutes to drive to the terminal) but they didn't bother me when we were sleeping. I probably wouldn't pick this place if not needing the airport b/c there doesn't seem to be tons right around the area, but it was nicer than I expected for our "need to just sleep SOMEPLACE before flying out" needs.

Downtown on the Free rail system - Not Bad

from A TripAdvisor Member
Well..If you are high an mighty and need the 5 star resorts to make you happy, then this place MAY do it. However, it is a 3 star hotel downtown with great access to the free train system (downtown) and a liquor store next store. Many shops and restaurant with quick access.

Room is fine and clean. it is a 3 STAR hotel and as such, is better than Motel 6 (one star), Super 8 and Days Inn (2 star). This is what it is. A great value for downtown in a major city - US or Canada.

I travel every week and would love to have this rate and nice of a hotel in all the major cities I visit.

Gym is small and equipment is less than average. The free Business Center is nice with one community pc and two connections for laptops. No wirless (and none free in the area - I tried to connect to many!)

Worth the stay.

Great if you want to freeze ..

from slashd0t
Stayed here for a business trip to Calgary last week. Hotel was OK, but, the room was freezing all night. Someone also set the alarm in the room next to me for 5:30AM, so, I was up a little early as the alarm chirrped away for a couple hrs. Staff were friendly at check out. Lobby is really tiny and less then pleasing to look at. Moxie's downstairs is a decent place to eat.

Beware the street corner Macs!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Sandman for 10 nights in October 2004, booked through Expedia for price of $60AU which was great compared with booking through hotel direct. Arrived late, friendly reception staff from check- in right throughout our stay. The room itself was roomy and comfortable- although only an ice bucket, we thought all hotel rooms had fridges but alas, no! Our main gripe was the bed, too uncomfortable for words! We tried everything, turning the mattress around, turning it over, putting it on the floor. They need to invest in some new beds!
Calgary is beautiful, all intentions of visiting again. Bit of a seedy area though what downtown/ cbd worldwide isnt? One word of warning, the Macs across the road- after checking in we headed across for a late night snack where an intoxicated young thing attempted to pick-pocket me. Expected that to happen in LA, not Canada! Best get your late night snacks early! Would stay again at Sandman; great location, easy walk to Greyhound depot, downtown Sears etc, always a cab waiting outside. Upgrade to kitchenette suite and avoid Macs is all!

Better available

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here on my first visit to Calgary, found the hotel had a nice facade (reception, Moxies bar, friendly staff), but the room itself was very dark and a bit on the shabby side. However it is cheap. When I told a friend of mine from Calgary that I was thinking of staying there again he warned me that the area it is in is dodgy, and that some unpleasant incidents had been happening around there. This is not something I was so aware of, but thought I would mention it.

Good hotel with great location

from PegBro
Spent two nights here having spent the last 19 nights travelling around Canada in campervan. Booked through Canadian Affair. Staff very friendly and helpful. We were allowed an early check in at 11.00am. Good size room, very clean, tea and coffee maker, iron and board.
Moxies restaurant had great food and excellent service.
C train stops outside hotel, $2 to travel anywhere and you can transfer ticket to bus or another train within 90 minutes. Great for getting about Calgary. We actually got train and bus to airport much cheaper than taxi.

Typical city hotel -good location

from gjm_wjm
We stayed here in July 2004, for 2 nights to see the Stampede finals. The room was quite, adequate and acceptable for the 2 nights. The real bonus is the C train station right outside, which meant easy transportation to the Stampede and other city areas. The Moxies restaurant in the hotel had extremely good food at reasonable prices and excellent service.

Good base for a couple of days

from Ostrich
Stayed here at the end of August 2004, having booked through Canadian Affair for £22 each per night. Good room, a bit threadbare in places and tiny bathroom but fine for a couple of nights. Moxies restaurant was very good and excellent service. Calgary is quite small for a city but very charming although a couple of days is probably enough there to see what there is to see. The river area is particularly nice. Try the coffee shop in the Robinson McNally bookshop on the main shopping street.

It was OK

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Sandman downtown on a trip to Calgary in Sept 2004 for a couple of nights. The hotel was fine, we didn't see any of the problems some other people mentioned. But we stayed in 2 different rooms and the second night on the top floor was very noisy with people banging door in the corridors.
So it was OK, but we've stayed in better as well.

Fine, but nothing special

from Diamond_D
Nice new-ish lobby and good restaurant in Moxies, but the rooms have an air of cheapness about them. Our bathroom door seemed to be made of cardboard, and many of the other reviews seem to suggest the same thing. I don't know Calgary well so I can't speak for other hotels, but if you get a good price it's a fine place, I won't go out of my way for it next time though.

C-Train If you're able to utillize it the C-Train is the way to go. We went to a show at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. We were on the train headed back to our hotel as we watched vehicles creeping out of the parking lot in batches or 10 - 15 at a time.

sandman stay Hotel was easy to find. Near airport, but almost no plane noise. Near shops and food places.
