Top Local Tips for Banff
Pack your own food We stopped in the Banff area (grocery store) and bought items to make sandwiches. The food in the National Parks is outrageously priced, so you'll go broke trying to feed a family, if you don't pack your own food.
Columbia Icefield/Athabasca Glacier The guided glacier walk is fantastic-- my favorite part of our trip through Banff and Jasper parks. The hike is not that difficult as far as demands on your endurance, but can be quite slippery. The guides are wonderful- safe and knowledgeable and friendly. The groups are not that big (about 10 per guide). Any equipment you'll need beyond what you brought is provided, but it's probably better if you come dressed in a jacket, hiking boots, hat, gloves, and sunglasses (plus sunscreen). Don't take ride the ice coach up if you are at all able to do the walk. You really have to walk to appreciate the amazing glacier and its features.
Dining Eat at the cafe. It closes at 6:00, so just plan to eat early that night.
