Stay in old Damascus - don't stay in new Damascus The best place to stay in Damascus, without any doubt, is within the walls of the old city. There aren't a lot of boutique hotels there (and ALL of the hotels within old Damascus are boutique hotels, i.e., fewer than fifteen rooms, simply because there is no room for bigger properties.) But we stayed at one of them, called "Old Damascus" and there are three or four others. The charm to Damascus is in the old city. Being there lets you fall out of bed right into the city itself. It also lets you avoid the travel time to get to any hotel in the new Damascus. It also gives you the chance to go back to your room during the day, to take a short rest.
