Top Local Tips for Damascus
Get someone to write your destination in arabic before taking a taxi. Taxi drivers in damascus dont necessarily know their way around. Unless you speak Arabic (I don't) I strongly advise you get someone to write the name of your destination down in Arabic, and have a city map with yuor hotel and its name in Arabic marked on it. This way you will be sure to get back easily after an evening out! The Carlton hotel where we stayed is near the Assad hospital., we found this was quite useful if necessary they could take us there and we could walk the rest of the way. Definitely you need to agree the fare in advance otherwise the driver will feel able to charge you what he likes and that will be your fault. Generally taxidrivers are pretty friendly and don't try and rip you off. The taxis are often pretty decrepit but usually they drive quite slow because people are always stepping out into the traffic to cross the road! There are always loads of them driving around.
good hotels in damascus stay at beit al mamlouka in old damascus or the sultan hotel close to train station, they have amazing service, nice people and you will feel right at home
old town dont miss the old town of damaascus eg ( al hamidia souq - alomawi massjed - hammams - damascus old house which become a resturant )) be carfull when you like to order any food first ask about the prize or you will be surprised when you resive the bell.
