Top Local Tips for Amman

Go to Petra Arrange for a driver from the Hertz counter to take you for a day trip. It's worth the expense, about 135 JD or 190 USD, but is worth having someone else drive and after you walk around all day at Petra you'll be glad someone else is driving you back to the hotel in Amman. Petra is amazing and different than the Roman ruins at various sites around the area. After you've walked for a couple of miles and get to the "end" at the Monastery, you'll be tempted to walk the 850 steps up -- I'd talk a donkey instead. That's an adventure in itself but all but the most in shape people will find walking the entire Petra site and up the stairs to the monastery and back to the entrance a real effort.

Petra Do not try to do this in one day. Also, stay at the Movenpick Petra: it is a beautiful hotel with great food.
