Top Local Tips for Amman
Women should have a husband, even if they do not When traveling alone as a woman in the Middle East, it's good to be married--even if you are not! I am married in real life, but even before I was, I used my "husband" to help me assert an "I'm taken" persona with men who assumed that a Western woman is inherantly "easy" and definitely wants to "get to know" them better. During my most recent two weeks in Amman, I had one taxi driver and one waiter in a working class restaurant blunting ask me to "know" them (they used more colorful expressions)--even though they clearly knew I was married (everyone in Jordan will ask you, even strangers, if you are married and if you have children)--but otherwise, being married was a clear sign of "don't mess with me" and is highly recommended. If you aren't married, prepare a story about your husband and wear a ring. Also, keep a headscarf with you at all times to put on your head or around your neck, to maintain modesty. This is another "keep your hands off me!" signal that locals understand.
Dead Sea visit A reasonable hired-driver drive. Unique experience with the bouyancy of the Dead Sea. Water looked unsafe for prolonged contact. Nice pay pool with snack stands but no alcohol sales. Shops sell swim cheap suits and rent lockers and towels. Vendors hyping medicinal mud. Clear view of Israel. Incredibly calm water.
Check you bill! You will pay a lot more than the menu might suggest for food.All menus state the basic price - then 10% service is added and also 16% tax. This can make a large dent in your budget if you don't allow for it!
