Top Local Tips for Amman
Watch your Dinars Watch your spending as 1 dinar converted into most currencies is a lot of money. A large bottle of water in a hotel costs 2,5 dinar but the same bottle of water form a street shop costs half a dinar! Make sure you get the service you paid for. We paid for return horse rides in Petra for the whole family but when the receipt was produced to the horseboys, they demanded an extra 5 dinar per person which I refused to pay. When I complained to the tourist police, all I got was a shrug of the shoulders in the presence of the horseboy. My tour operator acknowledges that this happens all the time and he did nothing about it either. Visit a few shops before making a purchase. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the differences in prices. NEVER pay the listed price ALWAYS ask for a discount. My daughter bought a wristband from a barrow in Mecca Mall for 1 JD and we saw it later at another shop for 5JD. The coins sold by the Bedoiun and others are fake.
