Stay away from Carmel Gardens

Being involved in the wine industry brings me to Zichron Ya'akov on business twice each year. As I bring my wife along each time, I am always looking for the cleanest, safest, and most comfortable accommodations possible. We chose to stay at Carmel Gardens Hotel on our very first trip to Israel based upon an internet search that, lacking any pictures of the place, made it sound like a beautiful, well-kept resort. I'm sure it probably was just that when the place was built, circa 1963(?). At any rate, as we were unable to find many accommodations available in Zichron, we decided to take a chance. Arriving well after dark we eventually found parking in their crowded lot a few minutes walk from the main entrance. I immediately knew we were in trouble as I could actually SMELL the place a good 100 feet before we entered! The hotel was enormous and had clearly seen better days. The massive lobby was harshly illuminated by fluorescent lights and was obviously designed to accommodate huge crowds. The few people we saw milling around were mostly much older, and apparently of much less discriminating tastes. What immediately caught our eye was a stain on the carpet about the size of a Volkswagen. How such a stain could even come to be was simply beyond comprehension. We just sort of looked around in stunned horror and disbelief. Knowing full well that we would rather opt to sleep in our rental car, but unable to control my curiosity, I asked at the desk if we could see a room. We were handed a key and set off down a ridiculously long hallway punctuated by odd-angled turns and a step or two every now and again. We finally came upon the room. The cheap, sparse furnishings were just awful from the sagging twin beds, stained walls and torn curtains to the equally squalid bathroom. Fortunately, they could not find our reservation on file, so we just returned the key, thanked them (and G*d) and left to find other accommodations. My advice is to stay away!
