When we walked in to this hotel, the front-desk manager started yelling at us. It was unbelievable. NEVER have we experienced such rudeness and discourtesy. This man should not be working with people. Finally, it was only because of our politeness, that the otherwise ugly situation was diffused. He was yelling at us because he wrongly assumed that since we had booked for the previous day, that we would be unwilling to pay for that day. That was not true. We had intentionally booked for the previous day, in order to guarantee an early morning check-in. The hotel is basically a dump. It is in need of serious renovation. One of the elevators barely worked. The doors are ugly, tacky carpeting. At least they're sound-proofed, but you can't hear a thing when someone knocks! They need to kick the door in the most disruptive way. The rooms are in bad shape. There was a loose wooden floorboard that would make the most disturbing noises if you forgot and landed your feet there. The sheets were thin and frayed and would always slide off the mattresses. There was a problem with theft, particularly of American passports. Other guests warned us of that. There was no in-room safeboxes. Most hotels have that now. So every time, we had to go downstairs and do all that the old-fashioned way. The bathrooms were the worst - ugly, not clean (there were hairs in the tub when we checked-in); and basically, the ugliest, worst bathrooms I have seen in any hotel. The breakfasts (we were so looking forward to Israeli breakfasts) were mediocre. The location was excellent. The view was beautiful. We appreciated having a fridge. Those are the only positives.

Ein Hod An artists colony just outside Haifa - accessible by taxi for 100 shekels or by bus - but not on Shabbat - is a delightful collection of studios with a great mechanical music museum and a really fab cafe called, unsurprisingly, the Ein Hod Cafe.
